Steve Vai sits down with his friend and mentor Joe Satriani for an in-depth talk about his career from Surfing With The Alien to Shockwave Supernova. In this 3rd part of their extended conversation, Joe and Steve discuss Joe’s early inspiration from Mickey Baker and Joe Pass chord books and Steve’s early lessons & inspirations taking lessons with Joe. A one-hour version of this show is airing on radio stations across the U.S. throughout Joe's "Surfing to Shockwave" North American tour. While it's a scale book, it's got everything in it to teach you how to make your own chord voicings. In the first 7 pages of the book it has the fundamentals - How to tune a guitar, Every note on the guitar, Key formula for major and minor formations ( shows you where to put your fingers to build major and minor chords in primary, secondary, tertiary, and quarternary positions), Scale Theory (i.e all about intervals), Circle of Keys, and controlled picking exercises and compound rhythms. 7 pages that show you a whole lot of valuable information.
The rest of the book is divided into a couple sections, Major Forms, Minor Forms, Special scales (chromatic and whole tone) and lastly, Comprehensive Arpeggios (including major and minor triads, Dominant 7th, major 6th, minor 6th, major 7th, diminished, augmented 5th, so on and so forth). The Major and Minor Forms sections contain all the scales and their related arpeggios in all positions (including fingering diagrams on a guitar neck with fret numbers, scale diagram on a treble clef in normal notation and natural, harmonic and melodic forms of some scales); each page has the scale and the Tonic, Subdominant and Dominant 7th arpeggio (if you learn your circle of fifths than you can easily connect chords/scales together using this info).
I'd recommend Mel Bay's Deluxe Arpeggio Studies book to anyone who wants to expand their knowledge or tighten up what they already know. It's an invaluable book that I've kept close by for 19 years and counting. When I first picked it up, I knew nothing about playing guitar and now I still know nothing but at least I sound like I know what I am doing.
