I first heard this album when I was 12 years old and it blew me away. It's simply a Masterpiece and I'll never get tired of listening to it and the rest of Joe's work. Unlike Steve Vai, who I really love as a musician as well but I can't listen to a full album of his without getting tired of it. Joe's music simply flows better and has a lot more "soul". In my opinion Joe is the greatest guitar player to ever surf this planet !!!

Joe is the perfect example of how to shred. Without the amazing sense of melody, it's just a bunch of noodling. But Joe has a perfect sense of melody to exercise the chops with. Just think of the best solos ever...they are always the ones that best reinforce the melody of he song. The guitar solo was always the peak in a rock and roll song. That why jazz guitarists make up half the list of legendary guitarists...they never play any notes that aren't a dance with the song. Play notes to sing, not to show off. :)

In 1990 I had a 17 years old friend from Martinique (West Indies) who was completely oblivious to rock, not to mention hard rock and metal obviously. One night I had him hooked with two tracks: "Surfing wih the Alien" and 'Crosstown Traffic" from Hendrix. This was 28 years ago and he never looked back.

lorenjams That a boy, you couldn't have picked a better song than "midnight" for a introduction to two handed tapping or it's a good one to brush up with! So creative using the capo and the two finger tap technique . True guitar legends like EVH, Satch,Via, Tom Morello and Dimebag... r.i.p brother, talk to you with there axe, doesn't even sound like guitar at times. Speed is just another weapon In there arsenal of sounds.

If i remember correctly, he once said in an interview that he recorded the whole album with only one guitar ( white Ibanez with two humbackers ). He also plays bass on the album. It's interesting how he managed to achieve master-piece with such a minimallistic approach

Hearing something like this album or Vai's passion and warfare for the first time could be very intimidating for a rookie, especially with no prior music knowledge or experience. I was 13 , just starting out when Satch dropped this bomb on the guitar world . Thankfully I had 5 years of classical violin before that or I probably would never attempted to play guitar! Even for just the casual listener into rock, fusion, rap.....whatever, it's just FUCKIN great, original music.

This and Steve Via's Passion and Warfare to me the best guitar instrumental albums of all time. I cannot choose between them. Joe's tones back then were so sweet. Coming from someone that listens to quite a bit of stuff like Animals as Leaders, the two liquid Tension Experiment albums, and folks like Yngwie. I mean I have a wide taste from the lightest rock to the darkest of metal, but this album and Passion and Warfare stand alone to me(or together anyway).

In 1988 a friend of mine worked in a bar and an American tourist asked him if he would play this album on the stereo. The tourist left without it and a week later my friend gave it to me as he hated guitar rock! There was no box but that's a minor quibble as I loved it, especially 'Satch Boogie' and 'Ice 9' and it became a big influence on me and my guitar playing. In the following years I bought his albums as they came out and saw him live in December 1995. Listening back SWTA is a guitar rock masterpiece that set the standard in 1987 with every detail making an impeccable album. While Satch had gone on to make some great music and great albums SWTA is the foundation and as albums go it has never been actually equalled for brilliance.

Saw Joe in concert in San Jose in the 80s right after the "haircut". Freaked me out. Saw him on stage and thought "maybe Joes sick and this guy is just covering for him". Oh wait, THATS JOE !! Nobody plays like that !!!

Saw Billy Preston with the Stones in Germany right after he "chopped the fro" and thought who is this guy the Stones have invited to join in ? Oh ya, it's Billy. When he sang "Nuffin from Nuffin" , I knew.

Absolutely! Joe by himself is a totally different animal than an ensemble......namely THA FOOT!!!!

(And he's still smokin' when playing as a part of a whole, rather than him being the whole...)

The backing track is just that- BACKING. It's the lead guitar that's the star, here...

But not if you are a drummer or bassist because it's soooo boring. I honestly don't know much about Satch, I grew up with this album as a staple in my household but even as a youngster I hated how bored the rest of band seemed. Is it a power trip by Joe? or what? They are obviously a talented rhythm section so why the fear of creativity. Sounds like a standard drum backing track with almost no fills, time changes or flourishes, the bass does not stray or run from the basic progression... the rhythm section sounds like a loop.Edit: I agree about Buckethead at least you have Primus as a backup on a lot of it. Also Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains (Les, Bernie Worrell of P-funk, and Buckethead and Brain on drums)
