I grew up in Cocoa Beach in the 60's and 70's and was mostly into motorcycle racing but I surfed just enough to say I knew how to surf...when I was in Engineering College in early/mid '80's at UCF I used to surf a little during my free time and one Saturday I was surfing in front of Patrick A.F.B. and there was a young kid there tearing it up...it was Kelly...I would guess he was 12 or 13ish and he was already damn good....Much respect...he is a great guy and a real badass.

Welcome to Hurricane Hugo 1989, the Poles, "Jax Beach" (actually Hannah but those reading will know). Got pushed to the bottom (sand) on a '15+ and my board stuck to the sand bottom. Swam for the surface after getting my direction straight, and managed to get within 1' of the surface (felt "air" with my outstretched arm clawing for the surface) before my leash reminded me I left something behind. Had to swim BACK down, dig out my board from the nose, float to the top (holding onto my board like a life preserver) so as to finally experience the joy of AIR for but a brief moment prior to being POUNDED again by wave #2 which drove me back under the surface prior to spitting me out onto the beach! (I too have seen "the angels" while under water during that time). Thank you God, I'm here to "laugh/reflect" now. Hurricane David 1979 spit me out over the breaker-wall into the Howard Johnson's parking lot and there were cars "floating" during that one but David was NOTHING compared to Hugo (in my personal experience).LOL On a side note, I remember surfing with you (Kelly) and Frieda in Flagger....good times;)

Mike P Winter 1999, Wilderness P.R. Dropping in 15 footers, getting washed. Coming out of the water to catch my first breath. I swallowed my 22" longhair. Cut it after that experience to have it about 25" long now. I actually grew long six or seven times after that bad experience.

I once went over the falls three times on one wave. I once had a lung full of water and had to wait underwater before I could surface and start to cough. I once hit the bottom and scooped up a half cup of sand with my lower teeth. If your arm ever gets ripped out of the socket because of swan diving remain calm and interlace all fingers around knee cap, then reset your arm ball joint back into the socket by pulling then releasing and then it slips back into place and you have to really focus relax as the muscles are spastic when out of place

I fell of of our boat on the Mississippi River and came to on the bottom of the river. (a sandy part at least) I had the air knocked out of me when I hit the water and lost consciousness for a little on the way down. I remember hitting the water and finding the bottom. Thank goodness I was on the bottom or I would not know which way was up. (I was dressed with a jacket and was a very skinny kid so I did not float well) It is so black in that muddy water. I would guess the water was around 15 ft. Which is also good because areas near where we were were in the 60-80 feet range. So I was really lucky. I have a lot of respect for the water.

I KO'd myself for a split-second wakeboarding, and when I came to I was underwater so I started frantically trying to swim to the surface but something was holding me back... Then I remembered I was wearing a life vest, so I stopped swimming and just floated up to the surface... Surfing scares the hell out of me. I went to Hawaii once, tried it, and scorpion'd myself on some kind of sandbar in Waikiki Bay. Turns out you want to surf where the other people are, not in the spot that looks good to your Wisconsin-bred eyes... I actually got up on a wave right away, but all of a sudden the water was a foot deep and the nose of my board dug in, hence the scorpion. There was some coral in that sand too, I took some home in my nipple and had to dig it out after it got infected.

Quagigitymire was bash fishing with a topwater popper without a shirt on.... Had a huge blowup and set the hook too fast. Pulled the popper right out of the mouth of the bass and it came flying back at me...hooked me right in the left nip. Didn't even feel it go in. Just felt like it hit my chest. I got into a fight with a guy and I had put him on the ground and was on top just trying to wear him out and not destroy him like I should have and the fucker lurched up and bit me on the left nipple and wouldn't let go til I elbowed him in the face over and over while he was latched on my nip. He left me with multiple teeth shaped scars on and below the nipple area and the shit hurt for months!

The most sketchy breaks are jagged rocks with sharp barnacles and have ski like moguls of this in between the shore to the break. Going from deep water to shallow fast also is another factor but the upside is not being too far off shore and/or a short distance.

It looks to me like he is displaying mannerisms and body language and so on that make the interviewee feel relaxed enough to open up. Whilst Kelly is smiling at points you can still see the fear and trauma of the incident when he is reliving it in-front of you in that interview.

+Burmese - I lived there 17 years and miss it dearly. Also been robbed 4 times at gun point there. I moved cos I didn't wanna raise my son in San Jose. It's fairly safe but the city, not so much, which is where I lived the last few years I was in CR. If I could afford to live on the beach I'd be there right now. No questions. The vibe and lifestyle is just about the opposite of this fucked up, soulless rat race we have here in Canada, where I'm at now. At least it's safe.
I haven't much about las maras in CR. I'd still consider San Jose safer than Detroit which I live an hour from. Lol. Saddest place I've ever seen and I've seen a lot of Central America. Cheers.

yes, sadly, the reputation about Nicaragua reflects the hard reality, the Maras, all the consequences after the civil war, etc...I have grown up in a similar country and I don't know if surfing those waves worth all the risks, maybe yes, maybe not, I guess it depends from the point of view you wanna see it, cheers! Costa Rica seems a way better place, I have some friends that traveled the country just for fishing, they had a good time, also the girls are cute, what I have heard.

+Burmese - I grew up in northern costa Rica about an hour and a half from Nicaragua. I actually have never been there though but I know it's one of the poorest in Central America and of its sour reputation but it does have some excellent waves and the beach towns are quite safe from what Ive heard. And your money goes very far as opposed to CR which is damn expensive. Petty theft is main stay in all poor countries.

No. People paddle out all the time into big wave breaks all around the world. Not everyone riding big waves can afford a jet ski, as far as safety goes if you're not a pro you got a leash and a flotation vest and thats a huge step up from Da Bull Greg Noll paddling out and into Waimea without even a leash!

you can't safely breathe while getting thrown around by a wave though. you'll change depth so quickly and if you aren't constantly exhaling your lungs can burst if you take a desperate panicked breath deep and the shoot up without adjusting, which would be really hard while you're getting worked.

There's no way to avoid tragedy no matter how many innovative safety features you could devise, at least in the foreseeable future. There's so many things that can happen, I had my leash get wrapped around my neck underwater for instance, squeezed tight too. Big set wave broke right on my head, and that happened almost instantly. Basically panicked while I pulled it off over my head, boom there went my breath right there and I got held down for a bit. Big day too, this is on Kauai. Right when I came up the next wave broke right on my head but after it pushed me down it shot me straight up in the air like a friggin dolphin just long enough to get a big breath before dragging me back down again for a nice long spin cycle, if it wasn't for that I might not be telling this tale. I was seeing stars for like five minutes, that was pretty sketchy.

In any case, the danger is never completely eliminated. You can always hit a rock, your board or whatever that lies beneath the ocean surface and have a concussion and become unconscious - and there's nobody there to pull the vest trigger for you. In any case, it does reduce the risk substantially.

They do have it. It started a couple of years ago, when a surfer named Shane Dorian came to the conclusion that the risk involved with big wave surfing was too big to be ignored, so he started working with his main sponsor (billabong) on a wetsuit that has a kind of empty air balloon in it, and a cord that you pull to deploy it. I don't know any technical details, but it basically inflates your wetstuit/vest and you come up, just like an air bubble. A lot of other brands are making them too nowadays - I don't even know if Billabong was the first one to do it, it was just the first one I've heard of.
