Hi, I'd like to know more about the surf scene on the great lakes. I'm writing from South Africa. Can I get an email for someone who knows intimately the dynamics of surf conditions year round as well as the size and type of surf community there? I'm working on a revolutionary surf project that could potentially be a welcome addition at the Lakes, especially considering the kind of swell the video shows, but I've never been to the States let alone to the Lakes. Regards, Ashton

Air Temp 20 degrees. You guys are hard core. I live in Florida and I've turned into such a wimp. If it's 60 degrees outside (water temperature around 70 degrees) I think it's too cold to surf.
That's why I hate California, because I always freeze my ass off every time I go there. That's wearing my 3"" fullsuit. I just hate cold water.

Exactly, if you are a surfer it's not always about the size of the wave, or where you are, but more about the fact that Hey, you're surfing. Then you can tell your warm weather buddy's about the time you were surfing and hit a chunk of ice. :)

Have to wait for winds out of the north and you'll get a good ride. However, wind out of the north is cold wind. Full suit a must, especially when the water will most likely be in the 40's- 50's.

I guess kdc43 has little knowledge of the great lakes. 30-40 waves can occur. Even larger in the open waters of Lake Superior. Ever here of the Edmund Fitzgerald? I grew up in MI and now live in HI. Those looked like fun waves for a Firewire 5-10 Potatonator.

because it is fresh water,   is the water less bouyant?     do fresh water waves feel different to saltwater waves?   are they   slower?   I am very impressed with this...  i have often wondered about these lakes, and about the mediterranean.
loki475
loki475 - 10 years ago
+psynapsurfa technoshaman I'll be catching a few metre high waves later today, I'll catch one for ya lol. But man you are reading my mind, last few times i went out I removed my fins because YES Derek Hynd is AMAZING. Finless really requires the right board shape though, meaning flat flat flat, and I am working on a finless design of my own. Right now I ride my fish with side-bite fins, theyre just enough to keep me from spinning out. I find wide and with little rocker is best, and length is relative to the wave heights your riding. AND I tell people all the time about artificial reefs, theyre making some for the wetlands around here to better support native fish species. My dream is to dredged a huge sandbar on my beach, out past the shallow bars. It would last maybe one season, but itd be totally worth it.
psynapsurfa technoshaman
psynapsurfa technoshaman - 10 years ago
Loki , with regards to board design, extra length is th efirst obvious choice, however, that is not the only  thing to consider. Extra width and thickness will help with the buoyancy,   but also , I am thinking you will still want the boards to  be quite fast, as you need to be able to accelerate and make the most of the slower waves.  So shorter wider boards ,  of a very contemporary design,  maybe like the Potatonator or the McCoy Zap,  might be a good idea.  Quads might be the go too, as they are fast  across the wave  and loose.
The boards CHeyne horan rode in the early to mid 80's might be worth a look too.  they were very fast and shorter, wider and thicker.  Thye looked goofy,  but when you ride them they are quite good.  excellent in fuller waves.  They were singles that tore apart  waves like tris.
I surf all types of boards,  my fave being single fins shaped in the late 60s tracker, through to the mid 70's souls surfer,   but i love twins tris quads, mals,  and even boogie boards.
have you thought of trying a finless set up?
maybe the alaia,  or the boards shaped by Deryk Hynd. {google deryk hind finless}  They may be well suited to the lake waves.
Any way, thanks again for the reply.  Stay warm and have fun!
psynapsurfa technoshaman
psynapsurfa technoshaman - 10 years ago
Thank you for the answer Loki.

I have often thought that in lakes, especially if they are not Tidal, or have very small ranges in varying depth over the bank,  and considering the breaks would usually only have one swell direction that works consistently, that i would be possible to construct an artificial reef that  worked perfectly for the  position.   I  grew up on a tidal salt water lake,  and would dream about the waves that could be had, on the many points.
I think an artificial reef and a wave machine could be possible in the right lake, and it could be perfection too.

keep up the stoke Loki.. Catch  a few for me.
loki475
loki475 - 10 years ago
I'm experimenting with board designs for the lakes and from my calculations the buoyancy difference is so small its probably not noticeable. But a bigger board will help you catch our smaller waves. And with small periods, on choppy days I've actually hopped from one way onto another.
psynapsurfa technoshaman
psynapsurfa technoshaman - 11 years ago
@ The House, Thankyou for the swift reply.
I find this so intriguing.
The House Outdoor Gear
The House Outdoor Gear - 11 years ago
I would not say the waves are slower but the period smaller. Normally around 5-7 sec on a good day. The water is less buoyant so it help to have a little bigger board with a little more volume. We also have  to wear 5/4 or 6/5 wet suits with booties and groves so that feel very different...

Big ocean waves on a mere fresh water land locked lake. Big lake but not THAT big. This has to be joke and I'm not falling for that. A strong wind needs 5000 kilometers of open water to generate ocean-sized waves like in the vid here. And no lake in the world is that big. Therefore this is a joke of some kind. Well, I suppose a Cat 5 hurricane on the lake will make those waves ,but at 5 C water temp is to cold to form any hurricane.

It really depends on where you surfing. If your near town its pretty rude, but not further up the shore. On more then one occasion, at stoney point I have just take a sip rather then go back to the car to get my water bottle. But there are some potential hazard from the 1440 barrels that were dumped in Lake Superior between Knife River and Duluth (near stoney). So next season i going to make a point to go back to my car to get fresh water, regardless of how good the lake water tastes.

I ride a 6'5 shortboard and i live in chicago. Theres days when the waves can get overhead in the great lakes, so its not a bad idea to have a shortboard and a longboard

There will be some days when you could ride your 5 10. But you still might want to pick up a longboard.

@momofreed I hear that man, I made a long post the other day and I stated I have great respect for GL Surfers, because it's like what we have in the gulf coast Texas except the cold. Our waves, by average are for sure not the best in the world, but always fun and always made the most of by us down here in the south. Places like the lakes, and the gulf, god blessed us with what we have, and we never take it for granted. That's where a deep respect comes from, and the ice breaks you surf :)

Don't become jaded douche bags like a majority of the surfing population. Don't end up trolling surf vids on Youtube telling everybody and everywhere that they suck. Always remember what it is all about. Hope this coming winter treats you well.

scadoo82 - 13 years ago
@scadoo82 I said cold doesn't bother me, I know that is cold as hell, but though from surfing the Texas gulf coast with warm water [55F or so average low] I know id need way thicker gear. Up there it's 8/7 8/8 full booties hoods, gloves I for sure imagine? and still be cold, but I have a better understanding then those who never suited up and took the plunge. Once again guys, I have high respect for the GL Surfers coming from where I am here in Texas, Hope some day to have the GL experience :)

I love this video guys. In two ways,I have a real interest in actually coming up to check surfing the lakes out.I hold a real appreciation 4you guys.Surfing is my passion in life.I'm from Texas and surf the gulf. The music really hit home to me.I was diagnosed at 17 with many disorders, the lyrics to this day at age 29 is the exact feeling. The best med is surfing. Ive sat for 2 years with a back injury, so cant surf. Finally in physical therapy Cold doesn't bother me, need thicker armor though :)

@MiddaAgggie We installed a big plate over in Canada its about the size of a two football fields, which makes mini tsunami. we pool our money together becuse it cost about $5000 buck to run and we have Canadian mounties turn it on, it pumps up and down for about an hour and sends us perfect waves ..... I wish we could turn it on and off. It's all wind driven' and thanks to the large fetch we can get some pretty good waves. But a lot of the time its just a windblown mess
