These guys are braver than me. I remember jumping in lake michigan once on an 85 degree day in may and it was still unbearably cold, lol.

Yes indeed! :D I just went to the beach here in Chicago last night, the water temp was 69 degrees! :) VERY comfortable, I didn't even need to dunk my head to get used to it this time.

+PinnedDowntoPinUp Yeah we did that pinneddown, haha. Followed by heating up on the hot beach sand for 15 minutes to prepare ourselves for jumping in again. If i remember right a local station said lake temps were still hovering around 54-55. I imagine July would be much better. I guess it takes more than one week of hot weather to warm up those big frigid lakes, lol. ;)

I just got back from Kayaking on Lake Superior..Which is way further north than the Chicagoland area around L. Michigan, and the weather never got above 71 degrees while I was there.. If it was 85 degrees next to lake Michigan far enough south the water would be very comfortable. just dunk yourself below the water a few times and you'll get used to it real fast! :)

Love Lake Michigan. Michigan for life. The best thing I love about it. Is my house sets right on Lake Michigan so my backyard view is mainly Lake Michigan. It's so effing cool during the summer. So blue and pretty!!!!:)

+Alex Long yeahh that wave is so amazing there.. i think it's because the wind in winter are much stronger.. we don't get that high in Kuta Bali plus the salty water isn't good.. i love fresh water... i wish there is a lake that big in Indonesia... we only have very deep lake...

1) Not really, the suits we use are really nice and often keep you mostly dry. 2) Nope, the suits are kind of restrictive at first but you get used to them. 3) Hours 4) Often around 32-36 degrees F in the winter, so about 1-2 deg. C 5) I'm sure they have them, but you don't need it.

Surfing in a lake with fresh water is amazind!!! 1) Do you feel cold inside the wetsuit? 2) Is it too unconfortable? 3) How long do you can stay inside the water surfing before you get freeze? 4) What is the water temperature? 5) Finaly, Are there any heating (electrical) system for wetsuit available?

Gentlemen, you are my heroes! if you are brave enough to go out on those nasty low temps why should I be afraid to go out in the puny winters of california? I'm grabbing my wetsuit tomorrow and going out there :D And BTW to all of those idiots talking shit. A surfer is not measured by the size of the wave, the type of board, or his skills, but by his love of the sport and passion. These guys, in my eyes, are some of the best surfers ever! up there with those crazy Ireland surfers.

@seatstothewind Take it easy, I was converting from celcius to farenheit and forgot to change the unit. I meant 80F. It seems like lake Erie, the warmest lake is often at 20C+ for 3 months in the summer. Lake Superior's much colder, but it was unusually swimmable when I went in late August/ early September this year.

In New York City, there is something called the "Polar Bear Club." They're a bunch of hearty souls that actually wait until the dead of winter & then they go to the beach, & let me add, that they don't wear thermosuits. The men dress in topless bathing trunks & the women in regular women's bathing suits. Decades ago, it was an enormous group. Now most of the members are aging. They claim that its vigorous & healthy to do this. Personally, I would be afraid to get a pneumonia.

Giselle Bundchen, the blond haired, blue-eyed super model, is the classic example as are a good part of the top models that grace the pages of the top fashion magazines of the world. @boarderforlife32 You don't have to live in California to be passionate about surfing. They probably get a lot of waves to themselves, which in my opinion totally makes it worth it! Part of the thrill probably comes from the uniqueness of surfing in a place where many people don't get out there and try. These guys are awesome. Would you be a "boarder for life" if you lived in Michigan? This is true passion!

I am from the Canaries and I was a FES in Illinois in 1985. I recall visiting Lake MIchigan before ariving at my final location and meeting some Michigan surfers that invited me to surf the lake; It was a small day and we surfed by some huge pipeline that went into the lake. Cold as hell, but hey.......no sharks....

We do get waves like this during the summer occasionally. I was out jetskiing and surfing a couple of weeks ago on the southern tip of lake Michigan in Gary and we had five foot waves that are easily surfable. They were bigger then the waves in this video.

As adventurous as I am, no one could get me to touch that water in the winter. The discomfort of the cold outweighs any pleasure that can be derived from the surfing even in a wet suit. You've got to have a certain amount of nerve in you to do this.

hmmm dident know you were from hawaii my bad i respect hawaian surfers cause my best friends are hawaina surfers. and im not in cali im in puerto rico but i have been to the mavericks ive been to costa rica ive seen monster waves 20 ft and higher ive ridden one of those giants and almost died so dont call me a poser for i have never seen a poser ride i 24ft wave. And i tried to surf pipeline but it was to damn crowded.

I surf in lake michigan South Haven South Beach and it is really quite hard to surf a short board there is no salt, so the lake is not as buoyant as the ocean. It's really fun to get a nice wave in the fall need a nice wet suit, hah it gets really cold without one, never surfed in mid winter tho i think it would be fun, maybe this year.

I love all this stuff that people post about how you can't surf lakes, you can't surf rivers and so on.. All I can say is keep thinking inside any box you can find guys. Respect to the surfers on the lakes. I surf my local tidal bore here in the UK, and I would love to surf a moving wave in freshwater. Maybe one day.
