If it's totally flat than it's pretty hard. But you can still practice paddling, duck diving, refine your technique with a SmoothStar, even paddle really fast and then practice your pop up that way!

You guys are great teachers, so i just wanted to vent on something, yesterday i had the worst surfing experience I've ever had. I live in Southeast N.E., Boston region. It was bombing out the back on my homebreak at 6-8ft at 10s eastcoast, i had purchased a new shortboard, 6'4x19x2 3/8. I am 5'11 about 200lbs. The board is a lost mayhem, and paddles well. The waves were stacking and unbroken at about 100 yards out. When i would drop in the board would sink under everytime, for 1hr half, i got pounded, over and over again! I was soooo pissed! I (thought) i could surf anything, cause all my other boards, beaters, softtops, longboards, (I've never surfed anything over 8ft). My question is, do i need more volume for my weight?, or just to get use to the board more? The surf was definitely strong enough, idk. Thanks for reading this guys.

Halo Rafael that is my biggest struggle too. A guy I met told me an awesome trick, try excercising with with training bands. Seriously go a few days/weeks increasing your shoulder strength with bands and you'll be blown away how much more powerful your paddle will be. He also suggested To focus on breathing. Take deep breaths and breath consistently, don't hold your breath when you are paddling, remember to breath. The other thing that has helped me so much is just going out as much as I possibly can. At least once, if not twice a week and I'm getting pretty confident and my endurance is going way up. Keep practicing and you'll get there!!
