I've been longboarding for about a year now and am looking into surfing. Is surfing a lot like longboarding or different?

No need to go do anything before you surf, just take some surf lessons or even try it on your own (beware of bad habits) if you're not charging 6+ foot waves you'll be fine

Guys do you have an idea if the trucks are different on longboard depending on the style?
I want a longboard to improve my surfing but i don't know which one to get.
I read about the Dervish loaded are perfect for this but where I live is really hard and expensive to get one.

Which Original deck are you rocking? I ABSOLUTELY love my Derringer 28 (with S8 trucks and no risers) as a surf simulator but for me the Pintail 40 does a pretty good job as well.

I want to thank you for giving me the inspiration to grab my neglected board and start riding again. Ever I started college I've been stressing too much about school and haven't had time to relax but now you made me want to feel that feeling that you can only get from riding your trusty friend.

The Surfy feel comes a lot from the trucks. When you look at the riding in this video, or in "Original Pintail Longboards" the surfy turns you see are coming primarily from the fact that the boards are using Original trucks. You *could* put those trucks on a drop through (though they wouldn't drop through the deck) and get something similar, but in general topmounts are going to be surfy-er than drop throughs just because of the turn initiation. Loose bushings trucks can work as well : )
Davin
Davin - 10 years ago
Pintails do get the best surfy feel, especially flexy boards. However, drop through boards do also have the same feel, it's actually all in the bushings, trucks and wheels, also lots of concave would be good.

Hey M8rt, Sounds like the Pintail 40 is probably the best size for you but getting one in Germany might be tricky. I think sickboards . nl might have them. Pogo stocks our stuff but might not have the Pintail specifically. You can always order from our website which has a pretty killer $60.00USD flat rate expedited shipping. It's not US postal, its expedited UPS and arrives in 3 to 5 days (though you do have to pay VAT when it arrives in Europe).

Yeah man, the Pintail 40 and Pintail 43 cruisers are epic. Plus Original trucks are were built to simulate surfing first, everything else second. If that's what you are going for you are going to be super stoked on those two decks in particular.

Hey Isee! As a smaller rider the Pintail 37 and Pintail 40 are absolutely amazing options for cruising and carving. If you want to do some sliding I would look at the Freeride 38 rockerconcave. If you want to do tricks and crossover freestyle the Apex 34 DoubleConcave is also a really great smaller board for smaller riders : )

Right on Hippy, I gotta start at the DiamondDrop even though it's a drop AND even though drops are not great for dancing, just because it is so freaking good for freestyle. We just posted a new vid over on our rider alliance channel; youtube . com/rideralliance that features it. The drop increases feel and changes the leverage during manuals which really makes them easier. The diamonddrop also has a ton of freaking pop which is really unreal for a board its size.

Hey Patricio, What kind of surfboard do you ride man? Just like skateboards there are tons of different ride styles and tons of boards to fit them. Overall I would check out the Pintail 40, with Original S8 trucks. You could also look at the Derringer 28 (again Id rock S8s) as a smaller pocket sized solution. Main thing is, get Original trucks if you want a board that feels like surfing : )

That depends on the setup. If you're running loose trucks or different duro bushings, you can tighten a truck up at first to make it more stable. Also depends on the style of truck and what it's meant for. A traditional truck will be more stable at speed but not as easy to turn as an Original truck. If she's just learning and wants to just cruise around and turn easily Original trucks are great for that. _Sean

@JoeWimply you can only use either s8s or s10s on the pintails. If you want a board for all around performance then stick with the s8s. If you want more stability go with the s10s. As for wheels, it all depends on the type of riding you want to do. Wheels have different shapes and durometers that affect the riding you want to do.

@Originalskateboards witch trucks do you recommend 150mm, 200mm 250mm original trucks with what wheels (type, dero and size)
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 12 years ago
@JoeWimply the pintail 43 is made with 9 ply, so it's a bit stiff. It's more of a cruising board, but with Original trucks you can still carve fairly easy.
Vincent Harbottle

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 12 years ago
@Bellatrixy1 Check out the Original Pintail 37 or Pintail 40 if you are looking to cruise around / carve. For something more serious take a look at the Original Freeride 38 which is another great choice for smaller riders and provides more room for progression as far as more serious riding / sliding is concerned.

@jonnym331 you may, but i've heard randalls tend to break if you wedge them more than 5°. but loose non-flipped randall 180s, maybe you change the bushings, are perfect for carving... but in the end you can carve every truck, as long as it turn well.

Wanna hear a funny joke?..... Original skateboards. Their trucks are hard to maintain due to springs instead of urethane bushings. Bushing trucks are more stable but just as carvy an example of these arerandals or parises. Original boards are expensive too you can get a board with the same quality or for cheaper. If you want a trick board like the apex go for a BC morray. For a pintail try one of lanyachtz pintails. There are may companies that are far superior. Thumbs up so people see this!

Can somebody tell me what the big difference is between this kind of truck and Randall/Tracker style flippable trucks? Is the big difference the springs instead of the bushings so the resistance is different (more lineair?) + the king pin angle? And maybe it leans further so it turns harder if you want it to? A set costs almost like 100 bucks over here and don't know anybody who has 'em :P

obviously this board isnt like surfing. A surf board pivots off its tail as a surfer utilizes his fins to change directions and pump. Also the front of the board has complete free motion to kick side to side. For a longboard to ride like a surf board the front truck would have to operate very differently from the back truck.

@cribtv so apex is for advanced longboarding and some tricks ? and pintails are like apex that you can ride any where, that it does not need to be a hill ?' i mean what is the best longboard for me?APEX OR PINTAL?

cribtv
cribtv - 12 years ago
@destri97 if all youre doing is crusing and carving with small hills then a pintail with s8's would be perfect. for more advanced riding including freeriding (downhill and long slides) and freestyle (tricks) or really anything (including crusin and carvin) then go with the apex. for what you said, a pintail would fit and save you some money.

@Originalskateboards And the surfers who know he is right? I ride a kebbek with randal 180's and venom bushings and can carve twice as hard as those guys. And I skate my longboard with my longboard on my back to the beach every other day. So don't rag on @ROa2 for having "never paddled out"

@Sk8t3r1717 Check out the Pintail 43 and 46- they are our longest boards. The 43 is a bit better for flatland with S8 trucks, but you can still have fun on the 46 if you don't mind wider trucks. -Joel
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 13 years ago
@EverythingIn1One As a taller guy give a look at the Pintail 46. It is a larger board that will support you even if you keep growing. I think it will fit excellently for you as a starter.

Original Skateboards - 13 years ago
@magicpowderrider If you can spring for it, the Apex 37 Carbon is designed for the type of riding your describing. Great for tricks and sliding/freeride. If you're doing shuvs and other tricks I'd say your a bit above "beginner". -Joel

@VanSquadLongboard longboarding isnt about how good you are. its about how much you get out of it and how much happiness it brings you. these guys are cruising having the time of their lives enjoying the moment and thats good enough for them. its not competitive and they have fun. why be negative on that?

@Originalskateboards hey im 13 years old and not heaps tall maybe just 150 cm but i really want to start long boarding. Because im only a beginner, im not into big carves and lots and lots of speed i sorta just want something to cruise around on but also i want something so that if (when) i get interested in in those big carves and lots of speed that i can do it. What would you recommend for m as a nice all round board that is at least maybe 35''
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 13 years ago
@042499mac 47'' might be a bit long, unless you are a really tall guy. Particularly if you are a surfer. Even longboard surfers expect to turn their boards relatively more easily than you will be able to turn a 47'' board (unless you have some Original trucks on there... but even then). You might want to look at the Pintail 40 or Pintail 43, depending on your height and weight.

Original Skateboards - 13 years ago
@chilldude491 Hey Chill, the first thing to remember is that the number one factor in speedwobble is rider skill (practice will help you control your wobbles). Of course equipment is number 2 on that list. It is also important to define "downhill", since riding downhill is different from downhill racing / speedboarding. If you are looking to ride downhill check out the Pintail 43 or Pintail 46 with Randal or Bear trucks. Either one of those boards will keep you carving and stable.

To anyone looking to buying a board. Go to a shop that has longboards, ask if you can stand on them, if you can do so, and if it feels right beneath your feet, and you can mentally see yourself bombing hills, going through streets and cruising around on it, then get it. I've been longboarding 24/7/365 for almost 4 years now, and that's how I got my first board. Get what you think feels right. Don't ask other riders cuz it'll feel weird for you

trashcan69 - 13 years ago
@TamboresDeJaykub the new Apex 37 with upgraded springs (red or white) would be good for that. The spring you should get depends on how much downhilling you want to do. Heavy downhill like maybe 30+ or something higher (40mph?) you should maybe check out the white springs. Your height and weight contribute to this as well, because that affects the spring performance at high speeds. Hope this helps

@sk84music5858 If you're on flatland, go with the Hybrid, but if you'll be on hills, I would recommend one of the new Pintails!

@sparce6 yes, they are same just stimulus has smaller diameter and smaller contact patch.Smaller contact patch makes them even easier to slide, plus smaller wheel is lighter and is easier to push around. I have durains 86a and they are great, but I want to get stimulus too :) You wont make a mistake with either of those.

The loaded longboarders dominate all these original guys.

@sparce6 Well if you are getting it for sliding I suggest 86a will last longer think about yellow stimulus ;)
