Mercedes Sprinter Surf Bus Van Tour - The most functional surf layout EVER!

The most functional, efficient layout Mercedes Sprinter MWB campervan motorhome Surf Bus Campervan Conversion in the world. Utilizing the high top height by adding over bed lockers. Belted rock and roll bench seats that convert to a double bed. Insulated and carpet lined. EXCITING NEWS – I have a new camper van conversion that will be posted soon, please subscribe to see it. It’s going to be a van of the future! Any parts you want me to cover in more detail in the next video please comment below. I will do my best to cover most of the comments. If you know someone who might find this interesting, please share it. Starting life as a disabled minibus, the van required all the seats to be removed, floor seat rails and wheel chair lift before the conversion could start. The conversion includes tinted windows, LED lights,100w solar panel, insulation, bench seats, captain seats, kitchen area and over cab storage. It was designed to function as camper van, but be able to be quickly transformed back into a van with the seats folding up leaving a 4ft wide loading area. See how the van looks today and watch the video! All units are individually designed and handmade by myself with great care and detail for this vehicle, making this a bespoke conversion. This was a personal project to accommodate my outdoor lifestyle. There is no toilet or shower inside, to ensure maximum space is available. Most campsites provide these facilities, so it was not necessary to have these built in. - Hand made new conversion, unique rear seating that makes a double bed, two single beds or six belted passenger seats. Perfect for storing bikes and surfboards under the bed. Gas struts hold the bed up or down so the bed will not move when driving. - CAN hob/sink with electric switch cold water pump. - Isotherm BI 41 12v top loading compressor fridge, will last for a week on the battery alone, very efficient. - 100w solar panel with 75ah maintenance free AGM battery power hook up with LED lights. - Removable post table with room for up to 6 people (two adults and 4 children) - Driver and passenger swivel seats, passenger table. - Kitchen unit has 4 drawers and two tambour doors with lots of storage. - Underneath the bed are 4 storage cupboards. - Over bed locker has 6 cupboards with lid stays to hold them open when in use. - All doors use self-locking catches that lock when closed. - Hard wearing commercial grade vinyl oak effect flooring, matched work top and LED over sink shelf. - Rear step - Reversing camera display on MP4 player radio via switch. - Over cab storage with built in speakers. Mercedes Sprinter MWB 208 5.6m long. This will fit tightly in a normal parking space, unlike a LWB or the new shape MWB sprinter which is 6m long with the same load space. Sometime it’s just having the confidence to go for it. I hope this build has inspired you to give it a go yourself. ..love the bed mate. Especially intrigued by the 'cantilever' system. Really want to do something like this in my own sprinter. A bed that folds away and opens up the load space. Planning it all now. How does the bed hold its weight in the middle? Just by the load spread at the shelf end? Is it reinforced?
But well done. It looks mint.
Sam Butement
Sam Butement - 6 years ago
Hi Dave, Yes as the bed is a cantilever it must have strong fixing points. I used 5mm thick metal brackets and nut-rivets to secure the bed frame in place. It would be a lot easer to make if the bed had a leg support but I liked the idea of keeping it clear for surfboards and bikes. You could possibly even sleep 2 more people under it on a thin mattress. When I only had the bed system fitted and not the kitchen I could fit full sheets of 8x4 ply between the wheels with the bed down or up. It really was a versatile camper. I hope to cover the bed system in detail when I make it again for the electric ENV200 campervan I’m building this summer! Best of luck with your build and let me know how it goes!

Hey Sam - How can I find those folding seat/beds? I can’t seem to find them anywhere!
Sam Butement
Sam Butement - 6 years ago
David Haas that’s because I designed and built them, you probably won’t be able find them anywhere. However they’re fairly simple to make if you just watch the video and pause it that should give you an idea of how they work. When I post the electric campervan build I will go into more details of building the bed system this summer 2018 stay tuned!

Hi Max,
I have mentioned this in the video, in the description and comments already. I have not installed a toilet or shower due to staying on campsites. With my previous campervan we fond we never used the shower in the campervan or the toilet but used the facility at campsites or public toilets.

If wild camping if your thing there is space to install a shower and toilet opposite the kitchen. Having a small portaloo covered by a removable wooden box would be an easy thing to add just incase you need to use it.

All the best,
Sam

If you want a loo there is enough space to add one. We used campsites or public toilets. I know from experience most motor home toilets never get used, the owner would prefer to use other facilities to avoid having to empty the toilet.

I have been dreaming to have such a van to travel around Europe. I have seen many rebuilt van-home on internet, this is definately the best I have ever seen! Can you share the design sketch with me?

Also I have been thing about some improvement: is it possible to combine the infill section with the table by making a folding-table? 2 folding plates can be installed on both side of the table with hinges, each plate is with length 50% of the main table plate. The plates can be folded upwards to form the table, only with double thickness, so the table can be extended with 50% to 100% length. it will also function like the infill-section.
By the way if you ever want to travel/live a while in Scandinavian countries, please contact me, maybe you can help me building such a van and I can help you with some local resources or give something back to you! :-)

Kev Robbie

Hi can you share where you got the brackets for the seating please?
Sam Butement
Sam Butement - 6 years ago
I used an M12 coach bolts and washers for the pivot point.  Then gas struts hidden under the seat to hold the seat up when driving. The gas struts also hold the seat down and this stops the seat from rattling when driving. I could not find a bracket that would fit in the space between the seat and the van so I had to make one. I used 25mm x  5mm flat bar and bent it in a vice to 90 degrees. I then drilled holes in the bracket and fixed it to the van. I don’t have any pictures of this yet, but will show it on the next video!

Another idea for the in fill section would be to use slats instead of a solid board. Lay them out in order, say one every 8" and the use some hessian ribbon to staple them all together. As long a first and last held in place gives a good mattress base. Easy to fold up and store in a cupboard when not being used

WOW, I am really amazed at all the positive comments on this video! Looking back on it, I would have preferred better weather for lighting, but that was the last chance I had to film before I sold the van.

The Sprinter was a great van, fantastic to drive and never failed to start. My favourite part of this conversion, was designing and making the custom bespoke beds.

Why did I sell the van?
- To keep this short, I will say it was not being fullly utilised. When I did the conversion, I thought frequent trips would be possible and weeks away were on the cards. However, I found I was only using it to drive to work and only slept in it once. Using this van as a daily driver was inefficient for me. I could not justify keeping it. If I could frequently utilize the volume, perhaps I would have kept it. At the time electric vans were becoming available in the UK and I have been super keen to move to electric.

Next Van?
- I saw the ENV-200 which is a small electric van by Nissan. Although this only has a max range of 105 miles on a single charge I realised I only drive 20 miles a day, so this will work perfectly for me. For others the low range will be a problem.

New Conversion?
- I will be designing and making the interior with a bench seat that turns into a bed. I will include a cooker and removable fridge.

THANK  YOU to everyone who has commented and shared! I will be posting the new electic van build this year! If you are interested please share and subcribe!

Marcin Ostrowski

Make it so that the infill folds in two and makes the table top double thick. This will allow to avoid storing the half of infill while enjoying table setup. Bottom section can be fitted with table leg socket and can have holes if you prefer, but top section flat on the side you will use as a table top and with deep groves on the other for air flow under the materace and the lightweight. Can do small hinges but maybe better to use two independent latching-on pieces. This is how I'd do it.
Sam Butement
Sam Butement - 6 years ago
Good idea! I could split the infill section in two and leave the table top part solid. I put holes in the bed base boards to allow the foam mattress to breathe and hopefully stop mould growing.

Sam Butement
Sam Butement - 6 years ago
I used lightweight furniture grade poplar ply. This is around 30% lighter than MDF and should not absorb moisture like MDF. The ply is laminated with a high-pressure laminate in gloss white, which brightens up the interior, is easy to clean and is a durable surface. For the bed system I used 15mm birch ply for strength and reduced the weight by drilling holes, this also allows the foam mattress to breathe.

Yes. The bed design and mechanism of the cantilever benches is beautiful. Is this your design and build? Do you have any schematics? For 72+ inch width it has to be rather robust or it will begin to flex and weaken in time. Please share!

Man, very nice build, lots of stuff not mentioned like the curtains, roof vent /opening, The beds and how they fold opening up the back is super nice for multi purpose use. Clean design, rounded edges in aluminum and laminate, even that it's in an unadorned older sprinter with windows, nice job,
