I love surfing "Queens". I first surfed it in 1975. I lived in Aspen and we drove to LA. Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays sold a round trip airfare and two weeks Waikiki Hotel package for $299. After two weeks in town we would change the return flight and try to find a place on the north shore. I had the good fortune to do many trips to Hawaii and spent many wonderful months surfing there. Queens is great just before sunrise with only a few people out. Maybe it's crowded now. My first wave I caught in Hawaii was on Sunset beach on a small day. I love Hawaii. Some locals can be a pain. I really blew it in the late 80s , I was offered to buy the only double wide lot ocean front home on the north shore for $160,000. My friend and I would have to pay about $600 each on the mortgage. We said no. In year and a half the place was worth $2,400,000. The Japanese were buying everything in sight. I was sad, but glad I didn't kill myself. Love God, he loves you. Watch the Kat Kerr videos, she goes to heaven 4 days a week. They have a surf park in heaven with 70 foot waves. shak-ka.

Do people just rent a surfboard and just go out there?

Im going to take surf lessons in my own country and thinking about going somewhere else after that.. It feels so nice to see people going with the flow of the waves! I really want to learn it, it seems like a great escape of life.

Its been some years but my brother and I used to spend summers in Hawaii, 1st place we would go was Waikiki and buy a used surf board for a couple of hundred bucks from a surf shop. When we were geetting ready to leave, we would sell it back to the same surfd shop for $50 less. worked out pretty well. Don't know if you can do that now.

Just next to Queens is a surf break called Canoes, which is fun for learning. There are beach stands on Waikiki beach.

When I was young my Dad would drop me off at Kuhio Beach on his way to work at Dole. He gave me $1 for a hamburger and soda. He would come out and surf with with me at Queen's after work and we drove around Diamond Head and Makapuu on our way home to Waimanalo. I learned surf etiquette from the older guys out there. Respect,don't drop in and don't get in the way paddling out or get slaps.
I'm 62 now.
