I don't know how anyone surfs at Shipstern bluff, those don't look like surfing waves (teahupoo too). They look disorganized just folding over top of one another, heavy, chaotic and crushing everything in it's path. They look like death to me! More power to the brave Aussies who surf there. From a Mom's point of view...Be careful! lol

I grew up near pipe and know of two surfers dying from hitting the shallow reef, I have also known two water photographers who were also skilled watermen lose their lives while shooting waves and hitting the reef.

There is no glory for Pipe being considered the deadliest break, its not nearly as heavy as tahiti, jaws or australia but its reward vs risk factor is probably the greatest. Cape fear and Shipsterns are big and heavy but ugly and unrideable which is evident by 90% wipeout rate, who wants to end the day of surfing by spending more time under the water then on it?

I grew up at pipe and still surf there today. There's just more lives taken at pipe than the other places because more people go to pipe than the other places combined each year because pipe is a large tourist attraction. Tourist, people who don't know how to read the ocean, people who don't know where the "bad" reef is, and people who don't know what a big wave is are usually the one's who die. At Jaws, Teahupo'o, Australia, etc. are way off shore and deep compared to pipe and only the actual processionals go to where it breaks in the other places. Pipeline is a beautiful break and fairly clean. The slabs at Australia with doubles left and right and Jaws with it's speed wobbling drop and very long hold down. Those kind of characteristics to a wave should be on a list of the most dangerous waves on earth.
