O'Brien in my opinion, is the best thing that has happened to surfing since Jerry Lopez. Its a breath of fresh air to see someone who is among surfings elite, be so humble and down to earth. The fact that hes just as stoked in 1' HB slop as he is at 20' Pipe or Teahupoo, proves he's in it for the right reasons. Its too bad he's been robbed more the once at the Volcom Pipe pro. Great to see what someone with talent can do at the Wedge. Ive never seen anyone ride it till now. Props Mr. O'Brien!!!

Haha beat me to it. There isn't a single standard where that was 2-3 foot. Not Hawaiian, not measuring from the back, obviously not measuring the wave face... I even bet every swell from each direction was each bigger than 3 foot, considering I was surfing in Laguna/Dana during this time and it was like 7 feet just from a gnarly south swell.

+SanFranciscoBay And? The area is Newport Beach. Across the jetty's and south is Laguna beach. To the North is Huntington beach and then Seal Beach. Plenty of quality surf spots with plenty of quality surfers.

It breaks the best on a straight South swell or Southwest swell. With the deep water channel and the jetty right to the south, it focuses the swell and then the sand bars jacks it up. Mix that with the backwash from the steep sand wall and the jetty and you get the Wedge.

I call bs on that. In my experience boards break easier on a leash when it’s big. Also can cause you to get dragged back over the falls or at least dragged backwards when your board is in front of the wave and your out back.
