I've got into the habit of doing a half-hearted cutback when I ride toe-side. I start it and my back foot comes around (like a check-turn in snowboarding) but then I struggle to twist my head and upper body through the movement without losing my balance, so I end up looking down the line and can't complete the cutback. It's not an issue heel-side as I don't need to look over my shoulder when rotating (if that makes sense?). I'll give that squat stretch/exercise a go, might remind me to engage my back and head during that rotation through the turn, but if you have any other tips I'd really appreciate it?

I disagree with moving to a fish quickly. Beginners should learn to turn longboards and midlengths before learning to turn on a fish. Their problem is usually standing in the middle of the longboard and attempting turns. Then they blame the longboard for being too big.

You touched on this but beginners typically focus way too much on the upper body and not on getting their back foot back far enough on the board. The back foot also shifts slightly up and down depending on the wave face.

Also, beginners dont know when to turn on the wave. I see people pump themselves off a wave and then try to cutback. Or they bottom turn on a closeout and get hit in the head.

You could make a video of just beginners and show what they do wrong on their turns.

It depends on who the beginner is. If it was an older person I’d recommend staying on a larger board I guess because they wouldn’t have the same alacrity as a younger beginner.

But, shifting from a big board to a smaller one cuts down the learning curve - I guess there are some things which need to be mastered like taking off, catching waves really easily and cutting across the face FIRST before the transition takes place.

Awesome footage and tips! Did you nose dive with the board at 5:10? Also i got a random question, when ever I go for a session, my leash has a tendency to go between my between my stupid toes, my big toe seems like the culprit, (imagine if you were wearing havana flip flops, there), any idea what unique trick am I doing and how to fix? I have tried stretching my leash and it happens about every 10th wave
