Mrmewface, it's not the height that does the damage, but the sheer force of the surge caused by some sudden shift in the ocean, such as an earthquake, for example. The water volume is displaced and has to go somewhere. The momentum is horizontal, not vertical.

+GetTheCombo Warface not even close :0 if u know how tsunami proceeds u will know that the wave eventually reaches ending point and it turns the whole water upside down by that time he cant have outsurfed it because its waaay to big and waaay to fast i mean gratz for the try must have been hardcore but theres no way he can do it :) the trick of surfing basicly is to follow the wave into the water tunnel until the ending point where its power is weaker and u can re-emerge out of it but with a tsunami its too huge on size and range and he cant outsurf it like that.

Just a big wave - tsunami's aren't perceptible above the surface of the water out at sea. If you were out at sea and a tsunami came at you, it'd pass underneath you and you probably wouldn't even notice anything other than a slight rocking in your boat. The danger comes when they get closer to shore, drawing the water out to them and not slowing down when they hit shallow water, then land. Bit hard to describe but it's just raw energy traveling 500MPH+ under the surface of the water that doesn't let up when it gets into more shallow water like normal waves would.

That is not a tsunami, that is a big wave known as peahi (jaws) in hawaii and it's well known in the surfing community. The sport is actually called tow-in surfing because those waves move too fast for a normal person to be able to paddle. I think the surfer is laird Hamilton, he is probably doing around 50-60mph, But that is just a regular swell. An actual tsunami would have moved at moved at more than 200 mph, so you wouldn't new able to catch it even with a jetski and Hawaii would have been obliterated if that had been an actual tsunami. Just clearing that up!

It is real, and the guy didn't die. Because this is not a tsunami, a tsunami is when the tide rises so much that the water spills onto the land because it's filling up and has no where to go. it's not a huge wave that broke. it's more like white water

Also, no way that is just one big wave. When they zoom out, he is like an ant. That had to be an incredible force to create a wave like that. look at the biggest waves seen. they are half the size of that, half the size of a tsunami.

Question, if the jet ski guy shown wasn't holding a camera, than who was, and why are they not dead, even if they were another surfer or on a jet ski it would almost be impossible to hold on to a camera on a huge title wave like that. the force would pull the camera towards the surfer and in the video, he is going away from the surfer. Just a question.

thats not a Tsunami! thats a huge wave. there is a difrence- you would never ever ride a Tsunami- cus it will take you inland and smash you against, what ever comes in your way( hotels, houses, cars or just rabble from smashed things) and shurely you would not want to be in that terrible situation. my heart goes out for all those who lost their lives in Japan.
