I was out the other day on my 3rd time surfing (I was using my friend's 7'' fun board) and I don't know how to duck dive. Some big waves started coming at me (maybe 4-5 feet) and I just kept being thrown around without even trying to ride the wave. Will this turtle roll work with big waves too?

I have just started surfing and currently have no ocean experience with my board. I have a 6"7 foamie and I've become very comfortable with paddling, standing and everything else that is possible with the board in the pool. However, whenever I attempt to turtle roll practice I find that once the board flips my nose fills with water and freaks me out. Any suggestions? Is it just normal for that to happen or should I blow air out of my nose while I'm under?

It's also important to pull the nose of your board downward as you flip upside down. When your nose is angled more downward, the wave will push it deeper, helping your turtle roll be more effective. After that, while the wave passes over you, try to create some drag by letting your body dangle a bit so the wave doesn't push you backward as much toward shore. At least that seems to work. Another video said to push your board upward and roll back upright as soon as the wave passes over you in order to keep it from dragging you back as much. I haven't tried that.

If I have a 6'6 fish nsp fiberglass should I try to duck dive or stick with the turtle roll? A duck dive for my board is hard because it is thick so

Thanks so much for the vid. I have only been surfing for a year or so and I have an 8 foot soft top. I am 5 foot 2 exactly and about 90 pounds and I have A LOT of trouble getting into bigger surf. I will be on surf team for high school next year so I don't get to choose whether or not I want to get in that day. I tried to let go of the board and let it float behind me but I just end up loosing a lot of ground and the leash tugs hard so my knees hurt. It's just really hard for me to get out there without loosing too much breath. All in all I was wondering if I should do exercises on land to make me not loose too much air or if you have any extra tips for fairly small people??? I do a lot of cardio as well so that's not a problem... If someone answers this I will be very grateful!!!

For someone around 5"5 (my height) I'd say a 6"3 is the biggest size where I would duckdive.

I am an 11 year old surfer from hawaii and my dad takes me out for big wave surfing sometimes at pipeline and waimea and the waves are so big. I have masterd the turtle roll but since im younger its alittle scary getting out there. Is it smart to just get off my board and go under the wave with my board behind me. I was just asking if that was smart or that will screw me one day. So get back to me if you can. I hope you can get back to me before the next winter. Thank you!

It could snap your leash if the wave is big enough... otherwise it's not a big deal. Just make sure nobody is behind you when you do this!

on some sites they tell you that your body should be vertical under water to act as a sea anchor..ive tried that and its literally impossible, have you heard of any one successfully being vertical under their board in time as the wave is passing over? If you take a deep breathe i think youd be too buoyant

+Nick Schmaus I was advised to do this by an ex pro-surfer at a surf school, and found it improved my turtling a lot. He explained that there's less contact with the power of the wave and you let it pass between you and the board. At first I found it impossible too. Then I tried the second tip which was to stab the board into the wave. Think of it more like a reverse duck dive. So as you turtle you push the nose of the board down into the wave over your head (it's not just a passive roll if that makes sense). With that stabbing motion, I found that my body naturally came away from the board and went vertically underneath it and people have noted that I don't lose my position or get washed back (as I wanted to know if it was effective and worth all the effort!). If you do it this way, then you're not going to be able to hug the board of course, so if the water is trying to rip the board out of your hands, it's worth knowing that it's usually from the force of the wave lifting the nose up into the white water (and forwards towards the shore). To counteract this you can keep the angle as a "duck dive" type angle by pushing one foot up in to to the tail of your board (another tip from an instructor). It works for me well in overhead size waves on 8,6 In The Pink nose rider long board (I'm 112lbs, 5'7), so you don't need to be "big and strong" to be able to do this. Hope this info helps someone :-)

I think it depends on the wave. Going under a smaller wave on a long board, I'll usually turtle as shown on the video. On bigger waves, I'll grab a little further up the nose and go vertical like I'm standing up with my arms above my head; feels like you're not fighting the wave as much. My $0.02.
