My thoughts about this as i have actually tried to surf wedge and live in newport: it is a bodysurfing wave but the beautiful thing about the wedge is the side wave. all you have to do is hold on and pull in. which also makes it a surfing skimming and boogie wave. oh and btw it is basically impossible to come to wedge and not get burned by some dude on a boogie. just my 2 cents

This is amazing; when I body surfed the Wedge in the mid-sixties no one, I mean no one even considered taking a surfboard out-these board surfers are true athletes, don't get me wrong, so are the boogie boarders and body surfers; but in the sixties it was pretty much assumed that to board surf at the Wedge was instant suicide. At my age, the closeest I ever get to body surfing the wedge is when I watch somebody else do it. What an amazing place, I saw it breaker 25 ft in 66 or somewhere around that time. I remember this guy going over the falls backwards on a 17 foot giant, He survived.

No, the surfer was totally justified. The basic rule with bodyboarding and surfing is to not drop in. It's that simple. You don't do it because its the only rule our sport has. The person dropping in is either an idiot or a dick, posing a safety hazard or taking away someone's right to the wave (and fun). It's totally justified to confront the person in that way (nonviolently but with attitude, of course).
