Was surfing in Canada and was letting this guy go for waves because he was ahead of me in the lineup, he missed three waves and so the forth I went for, so did he! He managed to catch it this time but I was like fuck this, he has cost me three good fucking waves before that. So I dropped in and cut him out. Some other dude paddling out had a go at me for dropping in on the other dude... I had been wondering for ages wether I should have pulled out but I’m glad to see I made the right decision. It wasn’t even the guy I dropped in on I was pissed about, it was the dickhead who had a go at me when he wasn’t even there when the dude was missing all these waves and not moving off!

Video was helpful, thank you. But all surfers are guys? You use only 'he/him' pronouns. Switch it up, use 'she/her,' use 'they/them' and try no pronouns at all, 'the surfer,' etc. :)

I didn't formally know any of this when I surfed in my teens. But for the most part if you communicate who's taking which wave you're good. Usually people WILL holler at you if it looks like you're about to drop into their wave or doing something wrong so just listen. It's also essential to research conditions on multiple spots because there is a very finite capacity to most breaks and don't even get in the water if the water is more surfer than surface. If all else fails yell "PARTY WAVE" and just go for it lol.

Fl R
Fl R - 5 years ago
If you're learning in what might be called a tourist location the etiquette is pretty much unknown by everyone, which makes it hell dangerous. You can tell when you and others aren't following the etiquette, you feel like you're having near misses all the time that could result in injury or even worse, damage to your board.

Great video! But you should also make it clear that snaking isnt just paddling onto the inside around the other surfer at the last second. It should also be pointed out that if someone is paddling into a wave from further out a surfer further in can't just catch it deeper on the inside and have right of way.
Sean Patrick Bailey

Here's a question from a bodysurfer in LA/Huntington Beach area. I've been bodysurfing for over 45 years as a hobby. I only know one technique and that's the old style of Proning and I start by pushing off the bottom sand. As a Proner, I don't ride the curl but climb to the top of very large waves and propel forward with the momentum and ride the wave like a torpedo to the shore with some variation depending on the wave. I feel that I have every right to be on the big waves as long as the lifeguards don't have the red flag markers warning off swimmers, nor do the lifeguards ever give me warnings and directions. And usually it's not the big wave surfers that are the issue. They are a bit further out riding the big-boy waves. It's the novice to intermediate surfers. I often surrender waves to surfers if they are in the best position for the their sport. I duck to the bottom and stay out of their way on the way back out from shore. But typically surfers have no regard for bodysurfers even a bodysurfer as crafted as myself (I shit you not. Virtually overytime I'm in the water I have strangers coming up to me asking how the f*ck I do what I do). My point, again, is I have every right to take a big beautiful wave that's either in my turn or for which I'm in the best position for my sport. Yet these surfers toy with me verbally to get me off the waves and one has even yelled a couple of times about how I'm "gonna get hurt". Don't get me wrong, I'm not concerned about their petty threats. But there have been several collisions. But I'm going so damn fast our bumps hardly phase me. I try to communicate with them pre-wave but they're, of course, way too cool to even acknowledge me. Advice? Is there a rule for surfers regarding professional grade Bodysurfers on the waves?

Ok first snaking is when u knowingly drop in on someone not when u paddle around someone to get deeper. That’s called back paddling. And second there is no lineup nowadays, most just sit in the way and never go deep enough. I always paddle out to the deepest spot and go that’s the only rule! Closest to peek wins and get the f out of the way paddling out!

Great vid, and good rules to follow. But, Haha bet this doesn't apply to your local surf gangs, jussayin (yah I said "gangs"). I've met some serious pros who are ridiculously ill-behaved, and also watched some beginners/intermediates sit for hours without catching a break, just following the rules. Sometimes you just can't beat the whole "it's my fkin wave, KOOK" mentality.

This series of videos are pretty good and I have no idea what the people giving thumbs down are thinking as beginners need to be shown the general rules. Rule #8 especially. You kooks, or beginners, need to hold on to your boards when the whitewater is heading towards them. IF you are unable to hold on to your board, go to a place with smaller waves and learn how to handle your board properly. Pisses me off when on some waist to head high day someone is ditching their board right in front of me. Just go to an empty spot on the beach and practice taking whitewater on the head for awhile. Turning turtle or duck diving, both require pointing your board directly into the whitewater. Practice what is a very basic and important skill to get it down. Trust me, back before leashes people weren't ditching their boards.

+Siward Beorn this is everyone's comment section. Disengage CAPS LOCK! Lol, I get what you're saying You need to know the area you're going to if you're chasing waves. 1) idiots that don't know the wave they are surfing shouldn't paddle out to begin with. Motheruckers die like that. 2) the whole locals will fuck you up for taking their waves shit has been massively beaten to death by any surfing doc or movie. The locals is those places have issues with new people because in the not so distant past locals were shut down and kicked off the beach and the waves because they don't bring tourists $$.
In general, don't be a dick head to locals and if you're a local don't be a dick head to tourists... Feel each other out.

Yes, locals can be dicks. But that how it is, you don't want to get into a fight with a local, especially if you're in a foreign country. Usually I try to surf when locals work (advantage of being a tourist hin hin). When I see some of them coming, I stay for a while and judge if they're friendly or not (head nod, smile etc.). If it looks like they try to snake and the tension is rising, I just get out or go surf another area. It's just not worth it.

A nice really comprehensive explanation of surf etiquette! Excellent video. I'll add one more thing: if you're a learner in the white water, watch the wave before you take off to ensure there isn't someone already riding it. If there is, then going for that wave too can cause a collision.

I've had beginners try to catch the inside shore break on a wave I've ridden from out the back, and actually aim for me, completely clueless as to what's happening. So dangerous! Being aware of other surfers is essential for everyone's safety. That fin on my board is big and sharp, I don't want it to connect with anyone's head!

who made these rules up ? and by what authority ? the sea is a massive highway and room for most people who enjoy it , not just for the few yes common sense should be used but remember surfing and sailing are two different things boats require competent navigational tickets surfers do not require such tickets therefore which body made up rules that by law most likely don't exist except in their head !
Lara LandX
Lara LandX - 6 years ago
would you get into a car and drive on the road without leaning give way rules and without having common sense decency? hopefully you wouldn't, because that would cause collisions.

I have a friend who almost lost an eye in a collision with a beginner surfer who caused a collision because they didn't bother learning surf etiquette. The "rules" are there to avoid dangerous collisions, for safety. They're based upon common sense, and having manners.

if you want to paddle out with the attitude that surf etiquette doesn't apply to you, then you're likely to cause collisions and harm others. don't be that guy.

These rules are not enforced by law. That's why this video is called "Surf Etiquette" not "surf laws." The rules are there for a reason just like you would have on a tennis court or golf course. And no, there is not "room for most people" on some beaches.

Laurence Le Beu St Clair they're common Sense. No one made them up it is just glaringly obvious what good etiquette is and what is bad.

What are you on? You've never surfed in your life I assume so please first go surfing with no common sense and disregard basic decency and I'm sure you'll wise up quickly

It's weird watching this, growing up in Hawaii I've learned that it's fine to "snake", the local boys always do this due to them being my experienced. But the rule with snaking is that you don't snake the same person over and over. We follow this rule because we don't line up in order, its whoever can get deeper and make it haha.

I did something wrong once, and dropped into a great wave a local took. It was in the morning and obviously his last one before going to work. I rode the white water in and ran after him to say sorry and even though he cursed me on the wave there was no hard feelings. Just be humble and apologise if you do something wrong and decent folks will give you a pass. Everyone makes mistakes and the rude one is the one who doesn't cut a beginner some slack.

I agree completely, surfers are generally some of the nicest people you will meet. When sufing at a spot you will find about 5-15 surfers in at a given time. Everyone knows accidents are going to happen. So as long as you show you didnt mean to do something or throw a sorry out if you dropped in etc you will be fine. Maybe even make a new surf buddy.

Greetings from South Africa

Don’t be afraid to say hi and chat a bit. You’ll find that once people know you’re a beginner and don’t mean to deliberately take waves that aren’t yours, they’ll be more forgiving. Every beach has its dickheads, but most people won’t get too upset if you say sorry and keep trying to do the right thing.

Sounds easy enough except for the "don't do it again." I guess you mean, intentionally do it again. After all, you are floating, with powerful currents, waves and lots of people.

I agree, that was totally sexist and transphobic. They should have said "ruin his or her or their or they them, however they identify as, if they identify at all's wave."

At 4:33 the surfer taking off was just a dick and he did want confrontation, he could EASLY redirect his takeoff just a little to his left, he wanted to go into the paddling surfer, if a guy came here and did what that guy did taking off on a local surfer, he would be asked to calm down or to leave, we are pretty chill here in Portugal but we do like respect. There was plenty of room for him to redirect his takeoff, this is another thing that pisses me off, people who go surf and like confrotation and look for this situations.. and the first rule should be changed to the right day and not spot, because you can live near big wave beaches like me, I live in Nazaré surroundings and who lives here know there's no way we can find a calmer spot on the days the waves are kicking, there's a very small window between flat and firing in Leiria (district where Nazaré is located), when everywhere else is flat, in Leiria there's nice waves for begginers or to have fun, the only place near that is surfable for begginers and intermidiates is Baleal that is more less 60 km south of Nazaré.
