Hey surf insight, recently I've started surfing again and I love your videos! Been a huge help. I have been practicing my pop up on land but I just can't seem to not stand on my knees before I stand. Its so frustrating because it takes me so long to get up. So do you have any tips or could explain what I'm doing wrong. It would be a huge help. Thanks so much for the video!
Surf Insight
Surf Insight - 6 years ago
A couple things you could check on then. Do you hold the rails at the moment of take off ? Thats really not going to help and adds to going to your knees.. Make sure that your not looking down into the board but with vision across the wave and sometimes a little in front .. Do make sure you have checked your not going to drop in on anyone first of course . Taking your vision away from the board can help a lot .. try those simple things and come back to us

Thanks so much for replying! The issue is I'm able to do the full flick jump and hands toes jump easy on land but as soon as I get in the surf I just can't help but get on my knees.
Surf Insight
Surf Insight - 6 years ago
Hi there .. some times , if your trying the full flick jump that you see in our videos it can be a matter of strength, timing , flexibility .. a number of things . So try to learn the Hands Toes Jump method first .. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJWYpNS_s_A and see if that leads you into the other jump " Flick Jump" BUT if you want you can send me a clip of your pop up practise at home by We Transfer to info@surfschoolsrilanka.com and I can take a look at it for you ?

This pop up is only for longboards. Quick pop up on shortboard is the real difficult one
Surf Insight
Surf Insight - 7 years ago
ah no ... the first pop up demonstrated is used for longer boards when learning and the second pop up is used at all levels and and all boards. So if your struggling with pop ups on short boards use the second technique with the flick in the legs.

Surf Insight

Thats great to hear.. men can be a dumb and just "do" till they then get it right and dont use any analysis of what they are doing very often .. just try to get there .. but that a good and a bad thing . They often dont over think techniques . Women on the other hand are aware of what they are doing and can get stuck on a fault in a technique .. you wont however ..but if you are still landing one foot in front of the other dont worry about it .. it will come and especially with dry land practise changing the muscle memory . Go for it and the more good drive you have in the arms and positive flick the more the legs will land at the same time.
Casey Grace

The way you teach people to pop up makes the transition to a shortboard/fish very difficult. I know since you are a surf school you want to teach the easiest method but in the long run it is WORSE for beginners to learn the pop up this way. Check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSOD4qsG9Go and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pti202SiePs . These guys are RIGHT ON and my pop up has improved a ton!!! Just a thought.
Surf Insight
Surf Insight - 7 years ago
Glad to hear those techniques in the links you sent me work well for you. The method we show is not the easiest but the quickest .. dont forget there are 2 techniques shown. The techniques shown are used with flexible and reasonably strong upper level beginner surfers but we use exactly the same technique with national champions and WQS surfers. We analysed how quickest jump ups were being done, over 35 years .. no matter the type of board... and the results come out in 70% of instances with the second technique we show. However as you have found out .. it may not work for you.

Many have said this in the comment section, but this channel is highly underrated! awesome lessons and teaching method! .. dear friend, i've watched almost all of your videos, and would like to ask you a question, i'm having certain trouble with the timing of the wave, im on a longboard and just started surfing and i cant seem to get the right timing to do the pop-up .. would you have some tips for me? thanks a lot!
Santiago Franz
Santiago Franz - 7 years ago
dear friend, right now im trying to catch unbroken waves! .. i have a hard time gettin the right time in certain waves, i mean, usually it feels right to pop up when the tail of the board starts lifting, but then in other waves it doesnt really work that well, any advice would be lovely and im grateful! thanks for answering to my comment, means a lot!
Surf Insight
Surf Insight - 7 years ago
hi .. thats a tough question without seeing you surf but and its a big but .. one of the biggest keys is your vision . so many people just focus ahead like a horse in blinkers and do pay attention the the wave they are catching and so dont know the moment when they should jump up. Tell me are you trying to catch the unbroken wave or are still in the white water ?

Surf Insight - 7 years ago
Thanks for that and glad you liked the vid. Checking that your not going to drop by looking down the line would be good do be doing way before that point . Even paddling for the same wave ( shadowing ) hoping they wont get it can be so off putting. If we are in our final paddle strokes just before take off and we have to check that were not going to drop in we are doing that way too late. The vid is really about the physical aspect of the pop up. We cover the drop in in this old vid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5z7l_W6pPs it address's a bit of that stuff but a new one with real in the water scenarios would be better for sure .
Connor Pearson
Connor Pearson - 7 years ago
I would also say that the back foot should be over the fins after you pop up. you probably do this unconsciously so you don't mention it.

if your foot is two or three feet in front of the fins, you'll never do carving turns or throw spray.
Surf Insight
Surf Insight - 7 years ago
Hi Conner. We are using the balance board / soft board as a platform for practise in the video. We have a new video about back foot positioning coming up using a "real" board and foot patch. Not sure when thats posted but here's and old one. But in this one too the soft board is only used as a platform. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scB3SRbZI0s The new video video is better due to using a short board. Thanks for your input

On a wave the board falls into it, making you more like straighten out, cause you're not popping up, like upwards. Make the drop not the pop !!!

I did a two step motion that I could get away with most of the time except when the waves were really steep. Was always jealous of surfers that can stand up and get in the barrel in one motion like a no-paddle drop in.
Surf Insight
Surf Insight - 7 years ago
Thanks for that comment. If we check the pro tour or most top surfing there's not too many times when you will see absolutely no paddling taking place but good timing and a quick one movement pop up is often accompanied by just a few well timed strong stokes. Not in huge waves however and in most cases we need to paddle for sure. Timing is always the key.

Hi Kevin. Thanks and do make sure that the physios tell you its all OK to make that type of movement but its more the impact of landing in training you have to consider. always do a good stretch before the training or surfing . All the best

The quikest pop up technigue is to bury the tail in the water just before the wave

breaks and stand up-no paddle take off -used on close -out waves

surfbum482
surfbum482 - 7 years ago
greenhouse Productions depends on the wave bud. Sure you wouldn't do it at snapper but at punchy little beach breaks it's the best technique that's all he's trying to say you sound like the biggest douche ever
greenhouse Productions

Phil Murphy try that technique behind the rock at snapper rocks....youd go straight over the falls. I think you been surfing to much 3 foot slop mate lol
Surf Insight
Surf Insight - 7 years ago
thats true .. I do remember a past Euro champ who almost only used that technique when in smaller waves but kind of limiting in anything with size
Fl R
Fl R - 7 years ago
It works but it really depends on the situation. It usually happens when you are paddling back out, someone falls off a wave and you rapidly snag it. But if you're setup in the line up you'll nearly always get a better takeoff from paddling in, even if it's only 1 or 2 strokes.
bobice555
bobice555 - 7 years ago
yea, i had misread the email regarding burying the tail. my bad. i thought he was saying as you were paddling. definitely, on a no paddle takeoff (my crew and i refer to it as the lazy paddle), the wave is faced, you're under the lip, shove the tail into the water and its buoyancy slingshots you forward. a bit sketch for country but most other spots when the wave isn't way steep, it's a technique you can use.
Surf Insight
Surf Insight - 7 years ago
indeed ! so many waves to catch a wave .. as the wave dictates
Vi Diamond
Vi Diamond - 7 years ago
I live in hawaii as well and I do shove in pop ups all the time on every wave I surf as long as I'm in the right position. If I'm a little out of position then will do the standard scrap and scratch in. The more techniques and ways you can utilize to get into waves the better off you will be. But at the end of the day, just do what gets you the most waves and stay frothy!
surfbum482
surfbum482 - 7 years ago
bobice555 u bury the tail a few seconds before the wave comes and then the boards buoyancy with slingshot u forward into the wave. U can add a few paddles as u shoot forward and you'll get dropped right into the pocket. Timing is key of course
Marik 444
Marik 444 - 7 years ago
Ah, so the wave just shoots you into the perfect position on your board with no other technique/effort required on your end. I must learn this magical takeoff.

"I SURF next to a cement pier inches away with 60 mile per hour winds backside i need to stand up fast."

Okay,? Didn't say what you were describing wasn't a thing or that you were lying.

Also, that's the point. you "stand up fast" after using this technique. The technique isn't really what helps you stand up quick. You couldn't teach that technique to anyone who doesn't already have a decent pop up tech already in place.

"You can still paddle if not moving fast enough."

Ah, so if I don't explode I can just paddle in? And then what, Poseidon sticks me upright on the board?

Nice try, Madison.
Phil Murphy
Phil Murphy - 7 years ago
look behind you to see the wave - if its too steep to paddle-no time -grab the front part of the board and pull down so the tail goes deeper in the water this will crouch your body then you will
explode your upper body forward this will shoot the board forward
and your hands will be in position to stand up.You can still paddle if
not moving fast enough.
I SURF next to a cement pier inches away with 60 mile per hour
winds backside i need to stand up fast.
Your comment i award you zero points- everybody is now dumber
for having heard what you said and may the lord have mercy on your soul
Surf Insight
Surf Insight - 7 years ago
yep exactly.. thanks
Marik 444
Marik 444 - 7 years ago
If you are talking about what I think you are it isn't really a popup tech.

I bury the tail all the time to get quick takeoff on closeout waves. The popup still comes next.

This is more of a "No paddle take off" description. Feels like you're launching yourself out of a cannon.
Surf Insight
Surf Insight - 7 years ago
with higher volume boards the pop can work well if you timing is dead right but we need to always vary the type of approach to paddle and take off that applies to the type of wave and power we are dealing with .
bobice555
bobice555 - 7 years ago
interesting. I live in Hawaii. we don't use it here. it's all about getting the right amount of weight forward and driving hard to get under the lip to make the drop less critical.
surfbum482
surfbum482 - 7 years ago
bobice555 give it a shot it's a common technique here and I use it a lot with no error
bobice555
bobice555 - 7 years ago
burying the tail in the water means you actively shift your weight to the back of the board which more often than not, will result in you either not getting under the lip and not catching the wave or dropping in late.
Surf Insight
Surf Insight - 7 years ago
Thanks for that and its a good old technique your describing and it works but a pop up is different from a "pop" take off that you describe. Once the tail is pushed in and the volume takes you back out and into some short quick paddle strokes you then have to jump up or " pop up " as we say
