hi Noel your tha man! i love how well u know your stuff! Can u tell me why my Large Julian Wilson fins feel stiff and slow? I cant work it out ive tried them on a few boards now, but the Klohe Andino Mediums work awsome. Thanks Legend

Newy rat Stoked you like our show!!! The JW fins are stiff and lifeless because they are Fiberglass. I like the JW fin in bigger surf. You like the KA because they are Performance Core which has way more flex compared to Fiberglass fins like the JW.

Some good tips Noel. I just replaced my old 5'7 Slater Sci-Fi with a new one and on my first surf I noticed the new board didn't have as much drive as the old one and felt a bit looser in the turns, when I put the two side by side I noticed the new board had slightly more nose and tail rocker and the rails were a touch softer. I definitively prefer how the old board felt but the old girls is starting to fall apart on me, so I am thinking of getting a slightly larger fin to compensate. I am about the same weight as you and ride the medium FCS2 Julian Wilson fins, just wondering if you can recommend what type of fin I should get.

martinwajda Interesting changes you noticed... you will love the KA Large in that board. That’s what I would put in there.

Be great if fin manufactures sold thruster sets so you can buy side fins and give you choice of what you like in rear fins.

The Parko JP5 are quality fins and a few of the team guys swore by them but I don't think JS is making them anymore. I think most of the JS Team have pretty much jumped on FCS for some reason. I'm a Futures guy so only a couple of my old boards have FCS (old plugs).

kingsofmayhem Sounds like good fins.... I have not tried the Kinetic fins yet.
kingsofmayhem
kingsofmayhem - 6 years ago
I'm running either the Kinetic JP5 phase 4 large which is a pretty big fin with lots of drive and flex or the CI RTM tech 1. I'm 175lbs riding a 5'8" Proctor Monsta. I've spent so much money on fins in the past 2 years lol

Now how does the tail shape of your board works with different sizes of fins?

I can put raked large fins on a step up but that thing just wants to go down the line anyway... not to mention the speed I would have from bigger waves, so riding large fins on a step up would be not very helpful..
Then I visualise how it would be impractical as well to put larger fins on round pins in boards for small to medium surf. You do want the sensitivity with the round pin but large fins would counteract that.
So from my understanding larger fins make sense in boards with squash tails and wider tails...

Can you comment on that and put some feedback you had using different boards and fins?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Stevan Wouthuijsen You are correct about using a Large fin on bigger waves and certain tails. I have a 5’11” pin tail (CI Black Beauty) and when I ride that board I use a Medium Size fin. A Large fin would create too much lift in the tail and disengage the rail at high speeds. The Medium fin will work in conjunction with the pulled in pin tail and help me control the speed and keep that tail and rails in the water for precise turns on big waves.

I would never choose a pin tail for small waves... too tight and no drive because a pin tail does not have much surface area. The pin tail is used to control speed and grip the wave.

However I do like a Round tail on a small wave board or better said a Thumb tail. Great speed in turns and little more traction compared to a Squash tail.

Hey Noel, Good to see more on fins rather than just boards. I've been looking into switching fins up on my Hypto Krypto to make it loose on smaller waves but without sacrificing drive and speed. Do you have any suggests for me? I'm 5'6 138lbs and board uses FCS. I currently have Medium Reactors but not happy with those. Hypto has pinney tail so was thinking of going smaller to loosen board? would that be bad move? Any help much appreciated! Thanks!

MrDavebrit I say grab a Medium set of KA and use a small center fin. It will have drive and be responsive.

So if all the small guys at 140-170 lbs are riding large fins why is there such a small range to choose from in the XL range? Surely there is still a huge percentage of guys from 170~240 lbs but only a few choices in the XL range.

Thanks Guys. I just think the fin companies are missing a big part of the market they could be hitting. Also, because of this fact we dont get any reviews on what we are needing. I have only one pair of XL fins - FCS II XL Performers - pretty much because they are the only XL ones on the market (there are only a few). Im 210 lbs but still (I think/hope) keep up with the lighter guys in the water. My fav setup is actual side fins XL with large/normal trailer. Thanks for the help. Great show as always Noel. Cheers

Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
daniel vb I will check into some XL fin options. Now I am curious to what’s out there.
daniel vb
daniel vb - 6 years ago
The problem with big fins is that they need upright templates, otherwise their tips would go past the tail of the board. ShapersFins have some extra large models, but they all have low rake.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Ben Vincent With bigger guys i am sure the fin companies focus more on fin templates and less on flex patterns. If I were a bigger guy I would want Fiberglass fins or Tech Flex for consistency in my turns. A flexible fin for a big guy in small waves would be Honeycomb or Performance Core and PCC.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Ben Vincent Great question... the weight range the fin companies use is just a guide and educating the surf community can be complicated. I think guys that weigh 190+ have less options because when they apply their weight to a flexible fin will hinder solid turns because the flex in the fin will not be predictable and consistent.

Im 5'7 and weight about 145. I ony have one fin, a jordy smal. It feels good when it gets bigger, but in small surf I feel that it lacks some of that tracktion and speed. I was thinking on buying a HS2 future fin medium size, for the smaller waves. Do you think its a good idea?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Jlevorin The HS2 is pretty upright so it will pivot good. You should be good... check to see if that set comes with a smaller center fin. If not then throw your Jordy small center fin if you need too. I think those fins are going to go good for you.

Alex Boutilier For your weight I would go with a Large set and a ride number of 6-8 on flex in futures. Jack Freestone Genrations and FCS2 I would Kolohe Andino Large.
