Surfer Experiences Terrifying Wipeout in Nazare, Portugal

A surfer experiences a terrifying wipeout in Nazare, Portugal, as a huge wave hits surfer Thiago Jacaré, who has a dramatic rescue to get him out of the water. A dramatic video of the incident shows Thiago Jacaré, 35, hit a bump and fall as he rides a giant wave. He is immediately swallowed by a wall of white water and is held down for several seconds. He surfaces just in time to catch a breath before taking another monster wave on the head. His teammate, big wave surfer David Langer, is unable to rescue Jacaré on his jet ski because he's floating around right in the impact zone. Eventually, after taking a total of five waves on the head, German surfer Sebastian Steudtner manages to pick up Jacaré on his jet ski and whisk him away from danger to the beach. Although completely exhausted, Jacaré was unharmed in the terrifying ordeal. He was taken by ambulance to hospital as a safety precaution. "This was by far the worst wipeout of my life, I barely got the chance to breathe between waves," Jacaré later told the filmer. "When I got to the sand, I was completely exhausted, to the point I couldn’t even move," he added. “I want to thank Sebastian Steudtner for the rescue...I won't ever forget this day!” he concluded. Thiago Jacaré is an experienced big wave surfer from Brazil. He worked for many years as a professional lifeguard and is also involved in the organisation of big wave competitions in Brazil. Praia do Norte beach, near the fishing village of Nazaré, became famous worldwide for huge waves in 2011 when Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara set a world record for the largest wave ever surfed. Lesson learned when surfing waves of significance, don't take the first wave of the set no matter how good and easy it looks. Know how many waves in a set before going out and respect the fact that if you go down on the first wave your gonna get the rest on the head. 99.99% of the people on the planet would have drown after the second wave on the head.

They need some sort of Radar Intergrated into the vest to get better locations of the surfer for the Jet ski rescue, and definitely an emergency breathing tank for the surfer is long over due especially when dealing with 80Foot killer waves.

Andrew Penman for regular waves this would work amazing, but these waves have such a raw power you would barely be able to keep your arms positioned. By the time you wipe out, you wouldn't have enough power to position your body to brace for impact. Tossed and washed around like a rag doll :-(

Do you notice when somebody wipes out, that the waves will pick up? As if they are alive and want to kill the surfer. That's because they are aljve. And if you doubt me, watch the next time somebody wipes out on a big wave and gets caught on the inside. Guranteed it will pick up and then you will see. They are evil forces of the oceans attempting to snatch Souls. But there's somebody else in the water who counters their attempts. And he was created in the image of a surfer. And he has saved your life many times, you just don't know it. The one and only JESUS. You Surfers are flirting with disaster every time that you catch a big wave. How do you think you keep from being grinded up on the reef? Fear not for you will eat it. Ride with Jesus in your heart and you'll eat it less often on big waves, I say to you.

Im 17 and i was bodyboarding a reef on a 10-15ft day. Got one set, first wave (never take that wave) got a good barrel on it but got dumped and my body hit the reef and i fracutred my ankle, then a 20ft wave came and i just had to cling onto the reef like a rock climber and nearly drowned, probs scariest moment of my life. Good lesson i learnt.... dont surf 20ft slabs

Why is surfing the most dangerous sport in the world? I always tell people the same answer... "There is no time out in surfing". Football fields don't suddenly collapse under your feet and swallow you up. Tennis court concrete doesn't suddenly break in million pieces and you fall into the abyss. Basketball arena roofs don't suddenly cave in and crush you. When you're tired or hurt in those sports, you can instantly stop and leave. That's not an option when a 80 foot wave wants to mow you down and kill you.

Yes, surfing deaths are extremely rare. Injuries also very rare. High school football is dangerous. Crippling knee back and neck injuries are super common in football. Concussions also and many go undiagnosed and untreated. Surfing on sizable waves can be scary, but hardly ever injurious.
faberho

Surfing cant be considered as the most dangerous sport in the world. Not even close. People rarely die, even in this wave, which is the biggest in the world. He had no injury. Check out climbing, basejumping, paragliding etc

faberho, 70.000 homicides/year is a robust number and doesn’t belong to Síria, but to Brazil ..... beside of that I’m living at Rio de janeiro. My state become one of the most violent in Brazil. So, in fact, there is a considerable risk when do things like going to work. I don’t live my life all the time thinking about it, but of course it’s a weight you carry every single day, because the time I’m out of home I’m constantly alert, specially when I’m driving. Ben Cooper, I’m scared with nothing .... I live in Brazil, adversity is the natural condition of life here ( 70.000 people victims of violent deaths / year). Never say that a Brazilian is a coward, that is not true and completely unfair .... that’s the main reason of my reflection: why take a unnecessary risk?

I too have had similar terrifying experience with about 4 meters waves, while doing buggy board surfing at Biarritz. My biggest mistake has been to go in with conditions such that the waves were not coming in at a regular frequency, beside overestimate my skills. When the roll get you, you are like in a washing machine and lose your orientation senses of where up and down are. E when you finally get to the surface, you just hope you will have the time to get some air. The fact that the board is bound to your leg and go all around you add another big problem too. I never went surfing again and that was about 25y ago.

Easy to say brother. But when you’re out big and the first one is breaking perfectly where you are and you see the second third and fourth wave behind that breaking already, I’m sure you will takeoff the first wave to.

Fuck!!! That was horrific. That second guy is a real hero, he swooped in out of nowhere just as the surfer had no strength left and was about to take his last breath the guy on the jetski saved him and made it back to the beach without losing him in all that whitewater. I bet you anything 99% of people would drown to death in that situation but this surfer lives because of the hero on the jetski.

That’s the one problem with inflatable vests, they stay inflated which doesn’t allow you to dive deep enough under the following set waves. If they acted more like a car airbag but you got multiple chances to re-inflate as needed it might be much better.

+Seeking Truth Seems like if this god had more grace s/he would have at least let you get a few breaths between waves. I guess you worship one of those non-omnipotent gods.

You are never going to be able to dive under a wave that big even if you were a dolphin. That inflatable vest saved his life by bringing him back to the surface everytime before the next wave hit him so he took no two wave hold downs. I surfed Oregon in 25-30ft and I took a two wave hold down when I got caught inside because I couldn't make it back to the surface before the next wave hit me. I almost died. By the grace of God I survived that day and made it back to the beach alive and in one piece.

Pycasso - let me put it another way, you don’t duck dive under a giant wall of white water because of the increased buoyancy.

Wow what a rescue. Even a buoyancy aid life jacket he's wearing has little effect in gigantic waves. He did it coz its 100% Pure Adrenalin. Hope he's ok.

+Ben Cooper I believe you can suffer from an air embolism very easily as well as the water column above you can one second be 50' above you and next you are back on the surface...
Rillydiculous 101
Rillydiculous 101 - 5 years ago
+707westy it's a catch 22 with the inflatable hey. It'll bring you to the surface for air but when the waves are pounding you like that it's probably not the place you want to be. A pony bottle would be a good idea 4sure.
707westy
707westy - 5 years ago
+Rillydiculous 101 that's good advice for normal waves but when you see that much foam, that thick, people, even with wet suits, don't float and can't swim to the top. I'm sure these guys use both regular and inflatables. They might even consider tiny 3 minute air bottles like a HEEDS.
Alexis Moreno
Alexis Moreno - 5 years ago
I found it somehow worst, since he can enter the water completely and easley. But maybe is better to take the hits and no effort to float.

+strider00111 in theory its a good idea but these waves are so powerful its hard enough to keep your arms by yourside let alone hold a regulator and bottle in your mouth.

Rillydiculous 101 Yeh never fight Mother Nature. I've been in plenty of wipeouts (but nothing like this), I just relax and get washing machined then eventually pop up! But these waves are killers, better now with jet ski partners and buoyancy.
Rillydiculous 101
Rillydiculous 101 - 5 years ago
With the vest you have to go with the wave. Don't fight the wall.
