Why are they ditching their boards. Never let go of your board because it could smack somebody or somebody else's board and then it's fighting time! Also, it's a test of grip strength.. Put a little wax on the bottom where you hold the board and it is easier to get a grip.. This is mother natures way of humbling... We've all been there. Nature can kick your ass in a second... Don't take her lightly! Train on land, pool, study the art of surfing and the science behind it... Triangulation comes to mind..

Boris Chang Ya you can just Eskimo roll with a larger board. A good tip is to kick the tail of the board up when you're upside down, that will force the nose down even further under the wave. Think of it like a upside down duck dive!

This is what I experienced when I paddled out for the first time during winter. Freezing cold water and very unforgiving breaking zones. Sometimes it's best to look for an open section, I often just wait for the waves to mellow in between intervals and then rush out and paddle my heart out before the next sets roll in. This is surfing folks!! In a two hour session you probably get about 5-10 minutes of board time actually riding a wave - if you're lucky.
If they made a surf movie or video of how much time you spend paddling vs. surfing in an average session it would be pretty damn boring - like this video..

I just get off my board and hang on to the nose - it keeps me under most of the foam charging to shore and I don't get the inside of my wetsuit flushed - and of course, I am right back on it sprint paddling to get out

if you are getting worked and your arms/shoulders are burning and you are out of gas, then pick a spot/day with smaller waves - because you only get out far enough to just get in the way

this is nothing compared to being stuck in the impact zone of a reef... If its a beachbreak, grow a pair and just take it. Its not even a beating, its just a little bit of rough water throwing you around. well sometimes the duck dive doesn't work well like when you are facing 6 feet of white water.. I like to just dive down and let the leash do the work...you become the anchor deep under water to hold the board in place..duck dive works best on a wave should that has not broken.. you want to get fucked up, duck dive in front of a big breaking wave.. it will drive your head thru your board..

In Australia we call it 'paying your dues'. You must respect the locals, better surfers, stay out of the way and learn the economics of surfing and waiting in line-ups. Its not about a mockery, if you aren't capable of coping in certain conditions then you pose a threat and danger to the surf line up and won't be respected. Start at beginner breaks until you deserve to be in that line-up. No one is stopping you from going out, but don't get in the way, or just surf on another bank close by until you can handle the main peaks. Pay your dues. Happy surfing, peace out bro's

I started surfing back in the mid sixties- no leashes - they did not exist - we got really good at holding on to our boards when getting caught inside. Yes when its a 10' bomb hell yes , but this situation does not warrant what they are doing.

Another reason noobs can be dangerous. If you let go of your board and peg someone else with it, don't be surprised if they reciprocate the same treatment with their fist. These waves could easily be turtled or duck-dived, and the surfers on the inside aren't able to manage either. If you're of a lower skill level, don't endanger others at more advanced spots.
