Is that Elizabeth Warren in the ad at the beginning talking about corruption in Washington. How about lying to the country and telling people your part Indian, so the minorities you lie to everyday will relate to you and vote for you. What a total fake hideous human being.

When someone's on a wave and you're paddling out, paddle the OPPOSITE direction from them, if they're going right, you go left, even if it means getting clocked by the wave. That's how you stay out of the way and gain respect.

I just had some asshat at my local spot in Florida cause trouble with me and my buddies having fun surfing. Kept saying he was from Hawaii and we are being dangerous. Knee high waves and nothing crazy we were so thrown off he was wanting to fight and couldn't understand why. There was no danger but he has this exact mentality in this video and some of the comments. Refused to fight him, one love and let's all have fun. He wasn't even surfing, some people are cray!

First surfed the North Shore in Dec of 1964. It was well known that “visitors” were not welcome but I respected their turf and had no problems. First judge Kelly Slater at the Dec 84 USSF Championships at Makaha and then surfed with him on the North Shore before we returned to the “mainland”. Great memories and friends as SideWalk Surfers rule our Lord’s world.

Peter Towend is a typical haole. I don't like it but that doesn't mean this doesn't happen. Yeah Hawaii is the 50th State but it's also an illegally overthrown sovereign nation which had it's own culture just like the Native American Indians. Western culture is one of imperialism and overthrow through the use of coercion or force. It is the truth, sorry to say.

These people are pathetic excuses for human beings. And by what divine right do they own to be the arbitrary "respect" police? By what legality do they adhere, to commit violence against another and not suffer legal consequences? Any fool knows you'll never get respect by beating it out of someone. That classifies these people as more of a sub-species; a primitive bunch who's greed for waves from an ocean they don't hold title to can only be justified at best by ownership they don't have and by respect they've proven they do not deserve. Absolutely pathetic

4:00 - He says they aren't violent, they just put a lot of emphasis on respect and that people come over here and disrespect people. By that he means, if you're a hoale (or if you're white), just BEING on island is disrespectful. Take it from someone who is white who has lived here for 5 years. 99.9% of the locals are great, but there have been several times I've been forced out of somewhere because I'm a "hoale". . .

Legally everyone has the right to surf the waves; so take turns and be considerate of each other....after all we are only human. And beating a guy for surfing a wave is plain wrong; its like claiming the beach as your own...the beaches of Hawaii are for the most part "public beaches aka not privatized property" But then people who are rich will begin to look for ways to buy up all the beaches....then we begin to ask how? Well....central bankers like the federal reserve and their close clientele push public policy to lessen the public domain and then push for privatizing more and more coastlines thus eventually buying up not only pristine beaches but even dockyards for major shipping...etc.....then a simple fight over a wave turns into a world war nearly threatening the end of humanity.....nothing but sharks and seals will be left for the waves....c'mon folks...realize we are all human and respect that on and off the beach...we can all get around a bonfire and sing kumbaya together.

It's no different in California or Hawaii you're going to run into all kinds of punks out in the water they don't have any respect for people they don't know and if you're from out of town you're going down I surfed Kaiser's Bowl in Honolulu very violent people there they will hurt you if you surf their spot same with pipeline back in the day when Lopez and his boys were out there you couldn't go in the water if you lost your bored and it went on the beach they would destroy it before you can swim in to get it and if you park your car you better not lock it cuz the locals will break the windows and steal everything you have.

The last time I surfed in Hawaii was on Kauai at Hanalei . There were some wave hogs in the water and they were not locals ! I was just hangin out and one of the locals encouraged me to go for a few waves . I was living at Sunset Pt. during the epic 69-70 season and the Fall was mellow . Everyone got as many waves as they could catch ! The Ozzies showed up and everything changed for the worse ! They basically ruined surfing in Hawaii with their total lack of respect for the locals and their home . And by the way none of the Ozzies could carry Barry Kanaiaupunis' water as far as surfing ability . I never saw BK hassle anyone ! He was the embodiment of Aloha . The Australians were all about self promotion and exploitation of Hawaii for their own benefit .

Leave it to the NYT to show one-way violence. Like, yeah, whites of European ancestry don't bring any violence with them. They are just peace loving people who want to ride the waves. There might be millions of dead bodies that speak to the contrary, but if the NYT talked about that they wouldn't be doing their job.

It's been a while but I lived on Oahu from the late 80's to the mid 90's. Never had a problem on the North Shore (surfed almost every day in the winter). The only fights I saw (only saw maybe 2 or 3) were on small days when someone fresh off a plane from LA would blatantly snake everyone. They would be warned first and when they foolishly did it again it wasn't pretty. I understand that you are on vacation and the surf is small and easy to handle but you need to take a deep breath and take your turn.

This story is extremely shallow and omits much of the cultural and political history behind Oahu's surf culture tension. Eddie Rothman and Kala Alexander are terrible spokespeople for the cause and struggle of many involved locals seeking respect in the water from people of all backgrounds and origins. While some surfers, like Kala, are thugs who lack the respect they demand from others, the majority practice what they preach and surf with Aloha, and would hardly ever resort to violence against others. In order to begin to understand why respect is so important to locals, you must educate yourself on the Overthrow and Annexation of the Hawaiian Kingdom, the ban on Hawaiian language and cultural practices that followed Annexation, the significance of the Hawaiian Renaissance, and the Duke Kahanamoku story. There is years of tension between outsiders and locals that comes out in surfing on the North Shore. Also, I'm sorry, but for those who have never lived on the North Shore and never experienced daily life here, you will never truly grasp why things are the way they are in these islands. You have to live here for years to start to understand the culture. However, you can still learn as much as you can about the history of surfing in this beautiful place. I recommend reading "Waves of Resistance: Surfing and History in Twentieth-century Hawai'i" by Isaiah Walker, and watching ESPN's 30 for 30 on Eddie Aikau.

Like it or not, the natives need to protect their land - a quick look through history shows what happens when natives are overly welcoming to the white visitor. As sad as that is, it's true.

What happened to the natives of Australia? The natives of South Africa? America? New Zealand? Exactly.

I'm white btw, just saying that these guys are absolutely right to keep the visitors firmly in check, yet welcomed if they behave.

If they had a softer line, Hawaii would be worse off than it is now.

The natives of South Africa (many tribes, including the warrior tribe Zulu) and New Zealand (Maoris) were not "overly welcoming" to the Britsh colonizers. Both groups had repeated conflicts and wars with the British, especially during the 19th century. The fact that those South African and New Zeland natives were an aggressive warrior culture did not change the fact that they were defeated, had their land confiscated and were made unwilling subjects of a colonial empire. The British simply had far superior weapons and tactic. So the native's aggression didn't change their fate. Get your facts right.

Kala = everything wrong with surfing. He should have done time for that. He's no surfer, just a thug using pathetic excuses to be violent. Always the victims these so called tough guys. You give all Hawaiians a bad name. There's obviously issues but if you think acting the maggot will earn you that respect, you are mistaken. Kalamazoo, you're a joke. Stick to acting, maybe become a member of Scientology, you're elitist and whoa is me victim mentality is pathetic. You should've been dragged off that beach in cuffs, and honestly, not allowed back on that beach, ever! Only in HI. Easy to be a tough guy when you're surrounded by your fellow racist losers. Get over it. It's always gonna be a popular spot. Move somewhere else. Breaks are much less crowded when water is 40° and a foot of snow on the ground. But then nobody will be able to see your "I'm a tough guy tats". What a disgrace!

A lot of people do not understand the Hawaiian culture behind this. Hawaiians have always hated the "haoles" or the foreign people coming to our land, it all started when our islands were taken over by the U.S. Could these problems be solved without violence? I'd say absolutely. But we come from a culture where if you have a problem you swing it out. Just saying

Guys it's not that hard to earn the respect of the locals. The first thing you need to understand is that Hawaiians have existed on the islands for hundreds of years until the annexation of Hawaii and invasion of foreigners. On top of that, you take their sport and mark it as your own. It hurts y'know? So cut them some slack. Play nice, wait for your turn, and be polite.

I lived in Hawaii for years and surfed all over the island, including the North Shore -- and the violence had very little to do with "respect" and far more to do with the color of your skin. And if you were White, you were a target at the outset. When the locals talk about "respect" in this video, they are not talking about two-way respect, they are ONLY talking about respect for THEM. They respected NO ONE. And anyone who proclaims differently is either lying or one of the violent locals.

zatoichi101- You are spot on. My brother and I grew up in Ewa Beach in the 1960s. I was too young to surf and more interested in collecting shells. My brother surfed at Ewa Beach (a spot called "Empty Lot"), and at Makaha. He had some altercations with the locals (whom we called MOKES) just because he was white. There was a lot of prejudice against the "haoles" and nothing has changed apparently. I took my blonde, blue-eyed son to Oahu in 2002 when he was 17. We went to Nanakuli, Waianae, and Makaha. I wanted to show him where I used to dive for shells as a kid. Just being at the beach at Makaha - and we were getting the stink eye from the "locals".

I lived on (or near) the North Shore for 9 years.  Never had a problem.  Not once.  True, I didn't surf Pipe as it was way too crowded when manageable and beyond my skill level when big, but I surfed almost every day during the winter at one spot or another.  The locals can look real mean but can be some of the nicest people when you get to know them.  Frankly, the only fights I saw were on small days where a surfer just off the plane would start dropping in on other surfers.  They were almost always given a warning first and then set straight when they continued to misbehave.

Don't be naïve people...Hawaiians are the used condoms of humanity... They're making it sound like they are defending their waters.... But that is just a disguise for total and blatant racism against white people.... Which is funny because before we got there and established a civilized society, they were eating bananas.... I had one friend violently beaten by these idiots while coming out of the mall going to his car, another friend spent 3 weeks in the hospital because he was beaten unconscious by a group of Hawaiians for surfing at the wrong spot.... Another friend at his jaw broken just for being white. They are some of the biggest vermin on the planet so don't listen to the lies..... Take it from the horses mouth. There's a saying among white people that used to live in Hawaii....." Hawaii is beautiful but the only thing wrong with Hawaii is the Hawaiians"....I keep saying we should declassify it as a state, leave there and then watch them starve to death...

That's not exactly the whole story, and Da Hui does not simply protect their own like some kind of tribal enforcers. They protested contests but came around when concessions were made by HonoluluC&C. The blonde surfer in question paddled out during a permitted event, and a bodyboarding one at that (historically in other areas like Cali, there's a lot of animosity between surfers and spinners). Kala took him out of the water during a heat with four other white guys, but who were competing and who were on bodyboards. As a surfer, he defended white non surfers during a permitted event. The video was really misleading, and Da Hui was unfairly caste in a negative light that does not reflect the otherwise high standards of the New York Times.

Respect is a two-way street. The concept of "respect" in misused by some locals in the same manner that inner-city gang members misuse it. The truth is, many "locals" show very little respect for anyone other than their own bros. David Miller,
Its haole, not hoale. The guy that paddled out during the contest wasn't even PART of the contest. He just wanted to surf because the waves were nice. Doing that puts him in danger, it puts the lifeguards who would have to risk their lives to go out and grab him with a jetski in danger, and it puts the surfers that are participating in the event in danger. You say youre from the north shore, then you know that the beach gets shut down when theres an event... not by da hui, by the state and the organization that is running the event. No ones allowed out in the water unless theyre part of the event. It wasn't about the guy being haole, it was about the guy going out when there was an event going on that he wasn't participating in. And can I just say, people who think da hui picks on haoles, Eddie IS haole. Pure haole! Not a drop of Hawaiian blood. So the haole founder (one of the founders I should say) started a club thats racist against other haoles? That makes no sense. Now THAT'S a joke. Respect... its the foundation of island life. Give it... receive it... show it... get it. When you say "everyone knew what da hui and "Fast Eddie" Rothman was about"... the problem with that statement, is who is this anonymous "everyone"? You cant speak for "everyone", and the fact that you used that word, instead of "I knew what da hui and eddie were about", means you never had any altercation with them YOURSELF, otherwise you would have mentioned THAT rather than rumors started by other people (aka "everyone") who got salty that they were put in their place when they tried to act dumb at the beach.

Medium Rick,
Is not family, friends, and hot girls theyre giving waves to.... its LOCALS (of ANY ethnicity & gender).
If youve been to the north shore, youd know theres a ton of people trying to get on a wave. Add to that the tourists who come and try to bully people into giving up waves to them. Add to that the people who are being dangerous & risking hurting others (have you ever been hit by a rogue surfboard? Cause that $h!+ can break bones). These guys protect locals. They protect the north shore. I thank them. I wish there were enough of them to be on all of our beaches. Kala is actually a pretty chill guy, nice, very friendly, always helpful... but hes passionately protective of his people, his land, the ocean, & the north shore. I feel bad for him when people say he's racist... he's not. He has lots of haole friends, hes dated haole girls. Its strictly about locals vs outsiders. That being said, ive seen them step to locals as well if theyre acting dumb or putting people in danger (thats locals of ANY ethnicity, even Hawaiian)... it just doesnt happen often because locals usually have beach etiquette.

I ran across a lot of these guys when I lived on the North Shore back in 2005-8. They were always very friendly to me. I've never had a problem in the water except in two places...Charleston, SC by an idiot who thought he was much better than he actually was, and Monterey, CA by a spoiled rich guy who never grew up. These people mostly just ask that you acknowledge that they live there. It's not unreasonable, and they're super cool if you're super cool. The video is just media hype. I'm sure Kala agreed to do it because he needed money or something. I ran across the guy and had a really favorable impression. He's also a much more humble guy now that he's older.

Dane Kealoha tried kicking me out at Pipe, because I paddled for a wave I knew he was not going to make the drop, he had no chance, but took he out on me. Was constantly threatened most times they did nothing because I was usually much bigger than them, but I knew that many had their big Samoan relatives on the beach near by, so I never threw a punch first. SeaKing I also have a Dane Kealoha story but it was when he was in So Cal. In Northern Malibu at the Ventura county line we have a break called Super Tubes. It breaks maybe 10 times a year, needs a minus tide and at least 6 foot swell.

It breaks really close along the rocks at the bottom of the embankment that leads up to Pacific Coast Highway, the wave and its circumstances can take your board any time.

There were 10 people out including myself, solid 8' stacked to the horizon. Dane was with 4 other big Hawaiians and as expected they ran blocks for Dane, They would paddle in front of you making it impossible to catch the wave, which is an extremely late take off anyways . This happened for about an hour until Mickey 6'5" 250lb (local at Malibu) who was a wacko anyways told them how we do it here in California, by that time there were 35, 40 out in the water and only 4/5 were Hawaiians. They got the message and Dane broke his board on the next wave and they took off. They expect respect but rarely give it.

Mickey told them in a polite way that we

If the tourists are throwing trash in the water, I understand that the locals will get angry. I live in Miami, and I've seen tourists who think they can just come and destroy the place. Trey Lima I can't really understand the connection between what u r saying, and having a grugh on a better surfer in the same line up. We shuold never get into each other waves, and we need to have some order but it has nothing to do with being local or not. The ocean is a fluid thing ,it is not a land. No one can own it.i do understand the hate towards the Americans, but what's up with that and surfing

Haven't seen much evidence of Peruvians and West Africans surfing in the past. Polynesians, sure. For thousands of years, probably.

No one ignores that Hawaiians surfed in the past. Everyone knows that modern surfing came from Duke K, who taught Californians and East Coasters to surf. With Californians then teaching Australians, South Africans, etc.

Bottom line, the brown-skinned Polynesians, I think, are some of the coolest and ballsiest people on the planet, IMO. Crossed thousands of miles of open ocean in outrigger canoes with no modern navigation or safety equipment. Simply on faith.

But cool that everyone can enjoy surfing today.

Overall, the native Hawaiians are probably much better off as a result of the annexation by the U.S.. Although it would be cool to see what it was like in the 1700's.

Everyone deserves respect for their contribution. The fact is surfing has an identity crisis on its hands. It stems from the marketing and the explosion of the culture after WW2. The whole surf nazi, its ok for whites to be racist and for the surf industry to completely ignore that Hawaiians, Peruvians and West Africans were surfing for hundreds of years before; but Hawaiians get a bad wrap for not rolling over after centuries of exploitation. Proximity to the beach is the only qualifier here and its a poor one, you don't chose where or what color you are born. Once we understand that we can appreciate each other more. I don't know why I was born the color I am or where I was born, all I can do is work the path in front of me, and share ideas, and try to learn. Growing up a black surfer in HB, random violence was as likely as hiccups. Didn't keep me out of the water, it taught me not to give people an excuse. Just acknowledge that you are being observed, smile, be polite and let your surfing do the talking.

If what you're trying to say is that we should be appreciative of the products and trade the United States has brought to our islands, you hold a good point although it is somewhat unrelated to what I said, I still respect that, What I was trying to say is that we hold grudges for the negative changes the us brought to our island and the tactics the us used to take over the island. Personally if I had the choice, I'd rather the us keep its resins and whatnot to themselves and leave us alone because we were able to make our own surfboards in the ancient times so I'm sure we would be fine without them now, do you get what I'm trying to say?

There's a lot of reason behind our behavior towards foreigners. Some people go to, albeit, inefficient and immature ways to convey their beliefs but in any case, there is reason behind our actions. If you study the history of the takeover on the Hawaiian colonies, as well as the multitude of negative American impacts on the islands that we see, you might understand our viewpoint a little better and avoid an altercation or two as well.

He moved to Hawaii, respected the local surfers and they took him in. His Hanai into some of the local north shore families, and when it came time to Mālama them, or care for those who took him in, he did so.

His methods, like Kalā's, may have been unorthodox, and Da Hui, like the wolf pack may have been made up of young, kinda scrappy, local guys, but they have a point. I didn't grow up on the north shore, but I grew up a stone throw away from Makaha Surf beach, and I gotta tell you the guys out there are the same. It's their water, their families have surfed there for generations, and so they feel like it's their home. It's like if someone walks in my house with their shoes on and makes my floor dirty, I freak out, because it's my house. You go to their beach and drop in and hurt someone, or leave rubbish around, or say bad things about them or their ohana, they get nuts...

They are human, and surfers tend to be more human than most. What I mean is, they are deeply invested in surf

you show respect by knowing the rules of the surf. guy closest to the peak has right of way. when paddling out the guy riding the wave has the right of way make way and suck it up and duck dive instead of trying to paddle around causing the rider to adjust. every wave isn't yours ect... stuff like that. these rules apply to every break not just the north shore. showing respect doesn't mean to kiss though.

The same feelings that the locals have are rooting in the same feelings Americans have concerning illegals and the Syrians. Human nature is to be ethnocentric, a primal emotion and feeling common to all humans, but largely ignored by most
Trey Lima
Trey Lima - 8 years ago
+jaxbus3000 to my understanding of what you said, you're trying to compare American racism towards illegals and Syrians to local Hawaiians to people from other cultures, is that right? If you're trying to make that point, i understand why you would think that because this video conveys a subtle point that all Hawaiians want to keep everybody else from surfing their waves. This video isn't the most accurate depiction of what goes on here. I'm a surfer from the west side of O'ahu and frequent the north shore and that's not the deal here at all. There are certain people that come here with a sense of entitlement and disrespect us, those people are the ones that are targeted for physical altercations because the locals here take that offensively. We don't just beat up any foreigner because the waves are ours, and we don't think that every foreigner is an ass until he/she acts like one. I don't know if you are educated on this specific topic but id recommend looking more into it, and the history of the islands themself.

The title of this video is misleading. It's like bait & hook media. I came to Hawaii in 94 from Pennsylvania, learned to surf, lived there 12 years and never once had an issue. The local crew at my spot took me because I came when it was flat and surfed and came surfed when it was good, never hogged waves, and shared my beer/food on the beach. Turns out some of those guys were da hui, the others just the uncles ;) - i had to move away to provide for my family to the PNW, still surfing, theres nothing like hawaii, give respect, get respected, this story is misleading. If you're not being an idiot in the water no one is gonna pound you. That's anywhere, even in Oregon.

5:47 sums it up: "Give respect, get respect"

Study the spot (be it Pipeline or ANY surf spot), spot the locals (they know each other, you'll hear them chatting about how it was yesterday or the last good swell), IF you decide to paddle out, be patient, let the first couple of sets go (people have been waiting, it's not your turn), don't even paddle for a wave that a local is paddling for, DO NOT drop in on anyone!

SURF SAFE! Know your abilities. If it's too big - watch & learn, don't ditch your board when you're caught inside (it floats better than you, hang on to it), don't scratch for the shoulder of a wave somebody is on - learn to duck dive or turn turtle on a longboard.

If outsiders can demonstrate safety and respect, things usually go well (there's still the occasional grouch). At least that's how it works at my local spot, and how it's worked when I've travelled. Smile in the line up & have fun!
Oprah30
Oprah30 - 8 years ago
The locals on the north just try to regulate their spots because it gets so packed in dec. plus a lot of cali kooks come down thinking I surf the wedge and malibu.. I can do this. they get wrecked in the surf. board hits a grom... game over. This ain't cali with black ball laws and kook seasons but with a lot more mainland folks moving here it will be. Trust me on the west side respect is key you come in hog cheese waves. You gonna get wrecked. Plus most Hawaiian surfers are always gonna have a slight chip on their shoulders be it the fact our lands, beaches, and culture was stolen from us. So there a lot of rage there.

In my experience (admittedly limited) there is plenty of this kind of localism which can extend to violence in lots of other surf spots, more than a few breaks in California are a fcking zoo. Obviously the extent of the violence here is extreme but I'd be willing to bet that is driven by a few individuals (Kala Alexander in chief), I agree with the other guy who pointed out Kala was lucky someone had never seen fit to come back and get some ultimate vengance for his psycho behaviour.

I kind of look @ things like this. When I travel. I go with the flow. If I plan to surf @ a place I've never surfed before I sit & watch for awhile. See how the wave sets up. How seem to be the best people out in the line up & when I paddle out I just wait my turn like anybody else. Just stay humble & most of all Friendly & that's all I can really do. That being said if somebody tries to come down on me because they don't like the way I look or the color of my skin is then all bets are off & I'll defend myself if I need to.

Island Flier
Island Flier - 9 years ago
First, the video report talked about the effort to keep order, insure safety and have mainlanders respect the wave, its power and danger. The violence shown was selected I'm sure of hours, days and years worth of surfers riding side-by-side with no conflict. At 4:06 the interviewee mentioned respect. (on both sides) It was never shown what behaviors provoked the hand to hand contact...was the non-Hawaiian mouthy, disrespectful? We don't know. There wasn't any audio shown. So like most news segments, the picture can be skewed. Just my perception. We are all Ohana in 'dis world (Iz).

Yes, yes, PT; if you give respect, you should get respect in return.

But with that said, a person has to earn their line-up rights.

There are no free rides, and there are way too many kooks at certain spots, and they are way under-gunned for a position in such line-ups (Brazilians sic').

And I'm a BIG fan of the 'Easter Egg Hunt', any time, any place; I'm bringin' it!

eddie rothman I would hazard is an extremely low i.q. challenged individual.  One of these da hui guys has a very blunt nose, leading me to believe that he and other local posers could possibly be related to neanderthal pre-humans. I would on evidence presented presume that none of them have any where close to a sixth graders education, and are definitely not on the U.of H. honor role. Feel sorry for the Australian visitors who obviously have superior educations and are true sportsmen. Due to rising hawaiian property values and the propensity for the local ignoramuses to breed like rabbits it seems likely that within a short period of time there lot will be leaving hawaii and occupying decapitated third world deserted detroit tenement slum housing. I mean, lets be honest these people haven't even graduated to the point of being hunters and gatherers.

The blonde Australian surfers look better in the media, and get all the attention. On the other side are disenfranchised native Hawaiians who've been surfing there for years and get ignored. Then along comes the surfing contests, the native get territorial, and they say "how come we're not benefiting from what's going on in our own neighborhood?"

Nothing in this video surprises me at all. I feel the same way when film companies close off streets in my neighborhood so they can make a useless movie that none of us are going to watch.

Shoddy reporting, NYT. I'm a Hawaii resident, a journalist, a surfer, and a one-time New Yorker. Kala Alexander is a thug in the worst sense of that word. Giving him an uncontested point-of-view in this piece only serves as a PR opp for a guy trying to remake his image later in life. Do some real digging. If you go out and surf someone else's break, hang back for a while and let the locals get some waves, give them a greeting and I guarantee they will recognize the respect you showed and let you get some waves with them.  If you go out to a break that's not yours and drop-in on people, back paddle, snake waves, and act like respect is above you, you might catch a beating.  And know your limits, don't try and surf a crowded break that's above your skill level.  Respect begets respect.  Everyone is out for the same reason, so be good to locals and be a good local.  Aloha!
John Heussenstamm
John Heussenstamm - 5 years ago
Look, Benjamin, this line "If you go out to a break that's not yours and drop-in on people, etc." IS the problem with everybody. There's no such thing as 'mine and yours'. Once you see that everything is God's then it can be ours. Manage the waters with that in view and the violence will subside and the wave abundance will follow. After all, this is suppose to be about wave sharing. The one who can prove that a local is nonviolent should be the one calling the shots fairly. HOWEVER, I don't believe it's ever going to happen so more power to Kelly Slater and commercial wave making. You can kick whoever the bad boys are out of the pool officially.

Another thing.
You may think, "Well, how are you supposed to learn!?!"
We're talking about Pipe here, not Waikiki. Wolfpak doesn't patrol shitty breaks, and shitty breaks are where you learn and slowly work your way up.
Pipe isn't for everyone and is arguably the most elite break on Oahu, with it better come an elite level of surfing.

Surfing isn't like skateboarding. Anyone has access to the same breaks that the pros have access to. Where do you find that in any other sport? Pros get their own private training facilities but in surfing you think you can just paddle straight out to where the pros are and say, "We all have to share! I'm a human being!"  come on.
hippoyell
hippoyell - 9 years ago
This is an opinion that hasn't experienced it. When you surf there for years and start realizing that these people have surfed there their whole lives and it just gets more and more crowded you start to understand. Further, the visitors that are plugging up the break aren't all at a sufficient skill level to warrant being out. When this happens, they get in people's way, drop in, or worse try to drop in, hesitate, and then get sucked over on you or in your way.
Wolfpak doesn't just go beating up anyone they don't recognize. They're enforcers, so they make sure no one is out that shouldn't be that will be jeopardizing everyone else's safety while throwing a wrench in the system.

I am commenting on this as a haole that grew up in Hawaii and surfed all over Oahu, including Sunset, Pipe, etc. I NEVER had a problem with locals, although I've seen others have problems with them. Let me tell you, if you go out and are respectful, know your limits, and don't get in any one's way you'll be just fine.

I'm tired of hearing about "territorialism", I hear so many people throwing the term around, yet I've never been targeted for surfing a new break. What the uninitiated interpret as territorialism is almost always just a donkey that shouldn't be out and someone else checking them.

But i know kala, i met him through his cousin, and over the years Ive never seen him go off on anyone that wasnt either SERIOUSLY asking for it, or putting people in danger with their behavior in the water. I believe him when he says he never condoned violence because ive seen him stop other people when they were fighting, or about to fight. I think he just has a bad rap. He's very protective of friends, family, community and the culture (both the surf culture & hawaiian culture), all of the fights ive seen him get into, which over 20 years hasnt been much, were defending one of those 4.

Dam right the locals always take priority I've been surfing now for only 6 months but ensure that the lads that have been riding for years get first wave just good manners

If I lived someplace, I'd appreciate some deferential courtesy from visitors. I will give the same to locals elsewhere. Let them go first, and I'll go after.

You don't want to offer that, you'll probably pay a price.

+doryman1000 What bugs me about Eddie is that he has this 20-something year old GF and that he seems to think that reasoning with one's fists is the correct demonstration of "Aloha". The fact that the Hawai'ians have accepted him seems to be more for his ability to pick fights with people than anything else. Fred Hemmings DETESTS Rothman. Go to YT and put in "Making Waves: Bustin' Down the Door Panel Discussion" to hear hemmings rail on the Rothman elder and NOT how he doesn't mention him by name either, proving how pervasive the fear of that family is, I guess.

As PT sez: respect begets respect. I was living on Maui in the late-60s when a group of Aussies arrived and they were loud, arrogant and disrespectful. They That's when I first heard them referred to as the "Texans of the South Pacific" and they moved on, or were moved on, fairly quickly.

What a difference they were to the Aussies I first met in SoCal in the early-60s. They were great guys ... guys like Midget Farrelly. Then surfing itself had become more aggressive by the late-60s. And by the time the Aussies were breaking down doors the whole surfing ethic had change, But I don't think behaving like thugs solves anything.

Unfortunately, give respect and get respect back is rare these days. Even if you are on the peak dropping in, there will occasionally be some wave hog burning you on a wave. Any decent surf spot, whether it be Hawaii, Australia, California etc, the local crew will make sure you don't get any waves if you are an outsider. You gotta pay your dues. If you are surfing some unfamiliar new break, give respect and don't try to take over. I'm not for violence, but I can see why Da Hui was formed.

The waves in Hawaii can be violent and dangerous and the crowd makes it even more so. When you get dropped in on, it's not necessarily by an incompetent Brazilian, but most often by Hawaiian locals who know you'll get your ass kicked if you dare say anything. They don't care if you get blasted by the leap and hit the reef. Unfortunately all this violence and epidemic of destitute souls are a byproduct of social inequalities fostered by the US policies. At least they get free health care!

I wear a 4/3 or 5/3 during winter in WA, with booties and hood of course. Some guys don't even wear hoods out there. The air temps can be as low as 20's and people still go out, mornings are generally 30s and 40's during winter, when we have the best surf. There is a growing surf culture in Canada and Alaska that surf in much colder temps and waters.
1veryreal
1veryreal - 10 years ago
back to the original point....it is entirely possible to surf in 29 degree weather (snow has nothing to do with it) Salt water CAN freeze at 28.4 degrees but that doesn't mean the ocean will, there are many other factors involved - currents, atmospheric pressure, and the content of salinity. In our lifetime the ocean has never froze in the lower 48.
1veryreal
1veryreal - 10 years ago
If you really want evidence I can show you, but Dude, I promise you on my life the ocean will not freeze @ 29 degree air temp - even if it's 29 degrees and snowing for a year. The only place you will start to see ice in the ocean is above Alaska, at temps consistently well below -20. People surf Alaska all the time, in much colder than 29 degrees air temp. I have friends who have surfed Washington/Oregon state coast below freezing temps when it's snowing.

The unfortunate truth is that the live and let live philosophy and true aloha evades the large majority of the surf world. Too many surfers bring a laughably aggressive attitude and bravado into an environment that should really humble, for the truth of the matter is when we step into the ocean we are all at the mercy of its will. It's just sad to see so many people misunderstanding the true spirit of surfing...

I lived on the North Shore for four years, I am haloe as it gets, and I never had a problem with Da Hui, but I have known people that have, and believe, they deserved it, when you live on the Shore year round you earn respect, you become part of the community, and they recognize this, these kooks that come in only when the surf is good, and then blow out of here need a little schooling, all these comments bashing the Da Hui I just don't get it, they are good for the North Shore, believe me.

Brian F - 11 years ago
I lived on the North Shore of Oahu from 93-97, and Da Hui do command respect, but the deserve it, and they don't go out looking for fights, but some people need to put in check, surf is only good in the winter, the rest of the year the shore is flat as a lake, so when people come in acting like they own the place, being arrogant and cocky, they need a lesson in respect, you don't let people shiit on you in your own backyard, I respect Da Hui, the are good people with familys, not a gang.

yea he is. Funny story, he actually came to my home town to do a SUP shoot a couple of years ago and was generally disrespectful to people that have lived in our community for years. He was just a complete asshole in the water. The lifeguards actually had to come and kick him off the beach

What about the haole's in the Wolf pak? Dude's the the Irons brothers, Mark Healey? It's not racist, it keeping control of an out of control situation. It's policing, but they have a different form of justice. What are they going to do, lock a guy up for being an idiot that put lives at risk? No...they smack them & say next time don't be a dick. They're superficial wounds anyway...that guy was ok in 20 minutes.

You mean the same guy that helps kids with cystic fibrosis with surf through the Mauli Ola foundation, because it benefits their breathing? Or the guy that regulates retards in the crowds, so deaths are less likely to occur? Yeah, real human garbage, that guy.

Respect? The people that talk most about getting respect the most tend to respect others the least. Where do you hear about respect? Street gangs, prisoners, locals anywhere... Also notice that those tough guys always act in crowds. Paddle out with one or two locals and they are mellow, or don't say anything. Get a few more, and the trouble begins... Kelly Slater is willing to go along with it because they give him waves.
JulietTango0311
JulietTango0311 - 11 years ago
No, it is a racist, gang mentality that is driving this. It is give respect and no mainlanders on the island, is what you should have said. That same thought process is driving the Hawaiian movement to leave the States.

Fuck you haoles who think respect isnt important. People actually die at pipeline and if u dont have the patients to realize tht then u dont belong out in the water in the first place. And u think its only the locals here who act like that? Its just as bad on the mainland dumbasses.

You can't lay claim to the Ocean I don't care where you're from. You wait your turn and if you can't handle it then maybe you should stay home. These guys are your typical huge chip on the shoulder losers that have nothing in life, so they want to make sure you have nothing as well. I live in a town filled with these scum, they don't go to school, they don't work and they don't get on with their life and when you do work hard and make good money they resent you for it. Grow up Kala,..you p*ssy!

To be honest I thought it was ridiculous how people would fight for waves. Im coming up on my 5th year and I understand how annoying it is. I wouldn't be superized if Bali surfers started a group like Da Hui. I'm not local, but I look like it and I saw how frusturated most local surfers were when visitors just snaked them off repeatedly and celebrated after like they were the sh*t

Here's the problem with the report: it assumes that the North Shore of oahu is the only place where this occurs. Go to Californii and you will find localism-surfers being very portective of their beaches from so-called interlopers and getting tinto fights with people who are dropping in on them while surfing. Not just in Hawaii.
James Jones

I'm so glad I got to surf the North Shore in the 70s. I was a soldier stationed at Schofield. We had our Wolfpack that contained highly trained surfers from the Mainland. Ask Buttons about us.

"We put a lot of emphasis on respect" especially after I put my fist in your face. Kala is the biggest douche on the north shore always trying to get froggy with some tourist or underage girl. Your intentions may be good with protecting the surfers but realistically your only coming off as a jerk trying to keep a spot for your friends and then pounding out all the others who arent "in".

There is surf code in every beach . You respect peoples waves and you respect the beach . Dont come onto the beach thinkng you can throw shit all over it or fuck with locals . And dont come dropping in on other peoples waves . I surfed all over Florida and lived in Lake Worth for 15 years . Locals regulated shit , so theyre not doing anything different in Hawaii than we used to do in Florida in the 80s and 90s . Have respect get respect .

I just think it's funny how this faggot talks about respect when he's just a piece of shit who doesn't respect anyone. I mean when you beat up some kid just because he wouldn't leave it shows how much of a man you are. So a grown ass man beating on some kid means respect? You don't just get respect you fucking cunt, you earn it just like any other man. I don't agree the kid should have went out during a competition but to beat on him like that and break his board is a coward move, fucking thugs.

not that theres anything wrong with being jewish from california, but it seems like a lot of people cop a lot of shit for being haoles, some of my friends copped a stink eye till they spoke aussie instaed of american and then were treated with great friendship, weve had some high profile hawaiian surfers come to our town and they broke a lot of local rules cause they thought they were shit hot, big wave riders, do as i say in hawaii, but ill do as i like in your country cause im shit hot hawai
