Thanks so much for this. It's something I haven't been told even after asking many surf coaches how to read the surf to catch unbroken waves. You know just how to simplify things!

I think he means the more angled the slope, the slower the wave will "peel" out, and the less angled slope will peel out faster - relatively. This is only my understanding of what he says (basically the higher side is the faster side & the lower the slower?). I hope this is a correct interpretation! Apologies if I'm wrong. So if you are paddling in & look behind you, the wave that is lower & slants off at a greater angle is where you want to go (as a beginner at least because it has less chance of closing out on top of you). ----x--\ if you as the surfer is "x" & you're looking over your left shoulder, you want to paddle in & surf to your left. Hope this makes sense (& that it's right?!).

This does not apply to florida,we have sand breaks here and the waves are very unpredictable

West Palm, Deerfield, and Sobe are my spots and its literally Russian Roulette to how it will break even with the same wind pattern

Yes flagler beach, st augustine, daytona, and cocoa beach are good spots. I live in south florida (west palm) and theres little to no waves here so you deal with what you got lol.

Could you please do a real life video on positioning in the water? Like a Part 2 to this video? Maybe tape someone paddling around and findng the peak. I have trouble finding the take off spot in terms of depth. How deep do i sit?

I have no problem laterally finding the peak. I either have the wave go under me or I nosedive because I'm too close to shore.

If you could show the difference between 2-3 and 3-5 foot days, that would be great too.

You misunderstood. I meant positioning in the lineup. Sitting deep...or shallow. This would be great for competitive surfers who want to get the best waves in a set.

Busted my ass on my longboard today and it got me thinking: what's the worst kinds of accidents surfers can get? I'd imagine maybe crashing into a coral reef but there's none where I live. I just want to be prepared when I attempt to learn in lessons during spring break :P thanks man, great videos!

this actually is confusing for me... does he have it the other way around?
Or do I have it wrong but I look for the peak or the pocket as the wave is behind me and direction it is going to break (basically seems opposite of what is displayed.)  Ever since I saw this I have been feeling more confused in the water... If the wave peaks highest on either side I go the opposite because to me the wave will break in that direction: ie peak tallest to left (looking behind my shoulder) it's a right.

+Surf Coaches hi there !  this totally clarifies it for me, this is how I see it (somehow on your lecture/illustrated on your board... it looks like the coach is saying just the opposite... can you see what I mean ?  Thanks so much !!!
iSURFTRIBE
iSURFTRIBE - 10 years ago
Hi there...I think I understand your question, so I hopefully answer this correctly...if you are paddling into a wave, and the wave is coming behind you, with a peak that is largest over your left shoulder, it would be a right hand breaking wave...the tallest part of the wave will break first, and then the tapered part will peel along...I hope this clarifies things for you!

To clarify, this is in identifying an unbroken wave and the best take-off point to allow you to go down the line on the open face. The highest point or peak is usually where the wave will break first. The idea is to identify the peak and direction then try and position yourself there before the wave breaks so you can paddle into the wave from the best vantage point.

So you want to always go twords the highest point of the wave?
