What's the problem with grabbing onto the rails & pushing up from there (like the 1st & 3rd kid did it)? I just had 2 lessons on an 8" board and it worked great for me.

Hey man I am a USMC Vet dealing with PTSD. I used to surf when I was young living in Cali but now I'm in MD. I started surfing again this summer and it has really helpes calm me down and settle my mind and the PTSD. I wanted to start taking other Vets out next summer hoping other will get the same results, what are some boards that you'd recommend that I could buy for them to start out on that wont break the bank. Thanks, and your vids really helped shake the dust off

When I'm at the beach I watch the experienced surfers and they seem to do something that is a half-way house between these two methods - like a very fast chicken wing approach, or a slowish jump up. The back foot is certainly planted before the front foot anyway.

I do that too but its really bad because you start getting addicted and then its really hard to not use your knees. Also you take a longer time to get up and in shorter boards its more probable you fall

+eliot468 Thanks, i now have a proper surf board and i think i can go faster on it.
eliot468
eliot468 - 8 years ago
+jordan chorlton also your need to have enough forward momentum just like a speed boat when the nose rises into the air the same thing will happen on your board when u have enough speed
jordan chorlton
jordan chorlton - 9 years ago
okay thanks i thought it was because i wasn't on the centre line of the board.
Flash2910
Flash2910 - 9 years ago
+jordan chorlton It means your weight is too far forward and your dipping over the nose, try leaning back a bit further before you pop and it will stop the nose from getting dragged under.

Why not grab the rails while pushing up?
noobtube1210
noobtube1210 - 9 years ago
I noticed if your still learning and you try and hold the rails it will tilt the board to one side and throw you off or slow you down. When you push up in the center you can feel the distrubution of weight and tilt so you balance it out and keep the board flat by instinct.
Kevin Hall
Kevin Hall - 9 years ago
I do, but that's because I learned in the pre-leash era so if you came off during take-off your fingers would be dangling ready to grab and hang on (go over the falls, whatever) to avoid a long swim to the beach or worse, the rocks. A throw back not necessary these days but up to you, whatever is comfortable, though more chance of your hand slipping off the deck edge over the rail and blowing the take-off.

+Jessica Gagliano It's a way to practice without the constant variables of catching waves.....and in our combined 25years of teaching experience, we have found that teaching beginners the fundamental movements on land, without the constant change of the ocean and the constant variables, that our first time or new surf students could achieve a higher level of success by taking a few moments to practice their fundamentals on dry land so that they can accomplish more once they enter the ocean....thanks for your question!

Hi there. Really good video. I can see now why I couldn't stand up on the surfboard, cause my hands were on the rail and every time I wanted to stand up my hands slipped on the side of the board And I ended up into the water. Other thing my legs were way to open so ended up with my knees rushed :-( and I actually blamed my wetsuit that is short legs and arms but I can see that is not the problem. The only thing that I would like to ask for is how to control the surfboard in the water. I was kind of panicking of how to handle/control the surfboard, I was scared of being hit by the board when the waves came to me. I didn't hold it really tight at the beginning so I alway loose it from my hands .

John Milner
John Milner - 8 years ago
+jason tran also sharks might bite off your fingers ;)
iSURFTRIBE
iSURFTRIBE - 9 years ago
+jason tran its ok if your fingers are over the rails, but you just don't want to physically grab onto the sides of the board...usually when people do this, it causes them to want to "pull" themselves up the board (usually onto the knees) instead of pushing and popping up...also, the point of rolling your chest is to posture yourself up, to get some separation off the board for your legs to come underneath you.

I'm an older guy trying to progress to a short board. I can catch waves and ride a long board but I realized I rely on the leverage off my toes to help pop up. Doesn't work for a short board. Oddly, the chicken wing seems to help popping up on my short board on land. I can lock the ball of the foot into the footpad for leverage. But I'm wondering if the bent knee would create drag? Anyone try it? I live 4hrs from the ocean and can't try it water at the moment. Thanks
David Cox
David Cox - 10 years ago
+Surf Coaches Thanks for the response. The method works great for me with the board on a yoga mat. Looking forward to actually trying it in the waves next week.
iSURFTRIBE
iSURFTRIBE - 10 years ago
+David Cox   well in reality, our knee isn't really in the water...when you plant your back foot and begin to push up, your knee will begin to come underneath you, and once you get the technique down, it becomes so fast that it is almost a blend between to two styles of pop ups....put your board on your bed and try it!

Chad Damon
Chad Damon - 10 years ago
hi im a professional surf coach. and THE POP UP is completely incorrect.this is surfing not karate. your hand position on the board before standing up is TOTALLY INCORRECT, how can you stabilize the board and without your hands open how can you get balance. it is not a "JUMP'its a slide, as for the arm positioning when your standing is far from correct. your position is for racing a wave not riding or balancing as a beginner, your right arm should be almost parallel to your left like a man walking a tight rope, thats how you get balance!! PS please correct your students hand positioning as you demonstrated on your video ...you look like you the one who needs the surfing lessons.

Wow Chad...You're pretty brutal!  The purpose of this video is to give people an idea of how to get to their feet on the surfboard.  We don't think that this is the only way to get up on a surfboard, but it has proven effective for us for years teaching beginners.  LIke everyone else, we are not perfect, and if you would like to post a video response showing your methods, I would gladly approve it so that others might see it!  Thanks! Bit of a "mind blown" moment here about grabbing the rails... That is just so intuitive but the way you explain it makes it seem less so. Even if you're pretty set on a technique it's always handy to add more moves to your skillset. So what's the difference between surfcoaches.com and shaka?

what he means is "check 3:15-3:25, in fact stop it at 3.18 mid-popup where you've done a knee pushup: if your board is too short for your feet to be on it, you will obviously just be using your hands and knees for this popup. Is it ok to not use my feet when I'm on a big board too so I don't need to have 2 different popups?" The answer : " yes, if you can popup like that on a short board, it's going to be easy for you to do it on a longboard. These popups are for beginners and longboarders"

i definitely wont say that my methods are the cut and dry only way, but i personally have never seen anyone have much success using their knees during the pop up. i personally teach people to not use their knees ever during the pop up.

Excuse me mr. Surf coaches dude. My brother taught me a way of popping up where your feet are together and off the tail of the board, and you pop up using your knees and hands instead of your feet. Would this work for just short boarding or is it a good pop up for any sized board

do it again and fix the poo stance. everything else was good i think. nice fluidity. nice way to describe it. all and all, not bad. just watch those groms and get your back foot right.

haha. both the first two kids did it right. notice how their back foot is perpedicular to the board, not open at a 105 degree angle like on a snowboard. no poo stance for the kids.

proper surfing stance? that is a poo stance. your back foot is not perpendicular to the board. and again, with the chicken wing. poo stance number too. that is improper surfing stance. proper is back foot at 90 degrees or more forward.

Great video. As an old and out of condition learner with a belly to work around, I really like the look of the " chicken wing ". I was flapping around on a 9ft foamie on my first lesson in choppy, messy white water yesterday and ended up on my knees most of the time. Popping up no real problem on the other occasion I had a go when I was young and slim, but time takes its toll! Until I get the pounds on and the fitness levels up, I may well try this one :-)

Which foot is in front is a matter of preference. some people stand left foot in front, some with their right. I like to ask people which way they would stand if they were to hit a baseball. I hit right handed, so I stand with my left foot forward because that is what I find comfortable. Also, if you have skateboarded, snowboarded, or wakeboarded before, your stance will most likely be the same.

Hey thanks alot for this video but does it matter what foot is out front, like in this video your left foot was out front does it matter if you change this. Or if its easier to understand the facing left or right of the board

trying to think of it I really don't know what pop up method I use. I just know I need to get up and next thing I know I'm up. I remember when popping up was such a difficult hurdle for me to overcome...

Well, if you think about it, it really is! You're able to slide up smoothly and stay super low! Great point!

Tough question, because it depends so much on your flexibility, skill level, core strength, wave types, etc, but if one works really well for you and you can master it, that's the one for you!

Practice more on land! And slow down your pop up a bit in the water. Concentrate on doing it correctly and not quickly!

Hi Laraine! Yes we do offer private coaching in two ways. First, in person in Costa Rica at Shaka Surf Camp, and second, our Surf Coaches website will very soon be offering a membership section of the site to allow us to be able to personally address your surfing questions via video analysis., Links to both sites are in the video description, YouTube doesn't allow posting them here. Hope to hear from you!
