I want to learn how to surf. I'm a really good swimmer and I can skate on a longboard and carve on it all day but I don't know, I'm kinda scared to go into deeper water at the beach. Like how do I deal with rip tides and sea animals and stuff. Most times the beaches I have access to in Florida, there is no life guard present. Can someone give me tips on how to surf?

OFFICIAL UFO this is actually weak, I have surfed south beach way bigger than this right after winter fronts that pass through. Actually where it broke further out than the end of the jetty.

Start with a longer board for stability. It helps a lot with paddling into the wave and standing up. As for the white wash and getting past the first break and the second break which you want to surf on, try hugging the board right up to your body while holding each side of the board with both hands. Then flip over while hugging the board to your body and the fins facing the sky when you see the white wash coming towards you. This uses the board to make you more aerodynamic and allow the water to flow over the backside of the board. So you gotta hold your breath and submerge yourself upside down in order to do this. Don't get water up your nose! Anyways, these two things helped me tremendously when I learned how to surf. As for sharks, there is nothing you can do about that. You can't let that get to your head if you are going to learn how to surf, but know that it is highly unlikely to get attacked. Over half of all of the world's shark attack takes place on the beaches of Florida. The chances of getting attacked by a shark at a Florida beach are 1 in 430,000 and the odds of getting killed are 1 in 36 million"
