To everyone saying "stupid". He had one opportunity for this. And he probably wasn't gonna do anything else with his life anyway. Like how you're not doing anything (probably). So sad as I'm typing this. I went to school with him. I knew him. I went to tennis camp with him and he's an amazing person. I'm so so sad to hear people calling him an idiot when maybe even 20 more people were surfing these waves with him. It was a freak accident and he hit his head on a rock and was in a concussion, he couldn't get up because when u hit your head that hard u lose control of certain nerves and he drowned. I am completely in shock at all the insensitive comments about this saying he is. An idiot or retard. If he is, then so is all the other 20 or 30 surfers out there with him. It just so happened that Zander was in the wrong place at the wrong time. We all love him so much and wish he didn't pass away but when he got to the hospital he was revived for a minute or less even but he was too weak and his lungs had too much water and he succumbed to pain and died. I miss him, his smile could light up an entire room. He was a walking ball of joy and happiness and knew how to make others smile and laugh. I wish before people comment mean things about him, that they would know who he was. NOBODY but his friends know who he was and NOBODY else should be saying he's an idiot. That's all I wanted to say. Plz be kind. He had a sister, Bella and imagine how she feels right now.

His death is sad indeed, he was young and probably with a long future ahead of him. He must have been a kind and loving person, which only makes his death sadder, but that doesn't change the fact he was in fact an idiot for making that decision.

All these comments from people hating on someone who was out there living life, he wasn't actually surfing in the hurricane it was still 300 miles off the coast. If you know anything about surfing, storms and hurricanes produce good swell to surf. He obviously didn't think he was going to die surfing that day, he was a capable surfer that had a freak accident. He was 16, and had his whole life ahead of him to live. I hope the people who commented hateful things can pull their head out off their ass and not just see this as some random youtube video, but a tragedy that happened in real life to someone who was out there living it.

I'm not trying to be insensitive to this as it is very sad and tragic but who thought it would be a good idea to surf in a cat 5 hurricane . Anyone involved that was encouraging this kid to do this like the photographer and friends should be ashamed . These ppl were very very stupid to do this and it was bad news from the start. that being said , my condolences to the family and at least he went out doing what he loved .

I went to school with him. It's unbelievable what has happened. He was the most happiest, cheerful person. He dies doing what he loved and I miss him. There's no such thing as dying happy. Trying to survive in any situation is a hereditary instinct. Nobody thinks to himself "I won't exist anymore, but at least I will stop existing because I've done something that gives me temporary pleasure". He was desperately trying to swim up while his lungs filled with water, causing him extreme pain from asphyxiation, until at one point he lost conscious, never to regain it again.
This is why people should be responsible.
