I rode the Cruz back in the sixties, stationed in San Francisco, USN. I left a 7 foot Dave Sweet in that town after Nam never went back to get it! Was fond of the Kelp keeping the water glassy. No crowds small waves, cold water live five!

it's so funny I always thought noseriding was meant as a cool trick we longboarders do. I went surfing the last couple of weeks and I actually got better leverage over the waves when i rode the nose.

Santa Cruz, the coldest water I've ever been in, in my life.

I get outta' the car and I'm sweating; I'm a Florida surfer and this is my first time north of L.A. County.

I look to the lineup and everyone is wearin' a freakin' wetsuit, but I NEVER wear an effin' wetsuit!

I run up to the shore-break and stick a foot in, just to get acclimated.

Instantly, my foot goes numb, and turns an icy blue?!

Eff' me...WTF!

I hate surfing COLD water, I never get loose; I don't want to get my body 'in' any more than I already have!

At my local "Inlet" (Sebastian) that's not an issue; not even a concern.

10 foot is the way to go. Volume, width, all help or hinder but the longer the better. I struggle to hang 5 on my 9'4" but I wrap the nose with my toes all day on the 10' log

That looks like the break between the Hook and Capitola -- Sharks? Can't remember what it's called. Nice schmello spot and the kelp beds on the outside keep it glassy most days.

I've never had issues at oceanside as a longboarder--not yet. I heard bad things about Trestles though.

+Mathew Dos Santos Don't see many "better" comments, just different, like guavas and lilkoi, relaxed vs more intense and frantic, different stokes for different folks ( though I submit that when Mom Nature is sending a swell that small, longboarding is more enjoyable than constanty pumping a shortie.)

Try short boarding for the full experience? U can't ride the front half of a board if it's short. My can ride the back or front of a log. That's the full experience

I'm 99% sure that's the Hook, I heard it got its name due to the abundance of kelp as you can clearly see. It's just a little further down from Pleasure Point. First ever wave I caught was at the hook when I was 10. LOVE Santa Cruz!!!

I really want to learn how to do this!! I'm a 5'4 thin girl. What size board would you recommend? I could I do it on something int he 8 foot range? I would rather not have a board over 9 foot.

no go bigger 9ft nose rider or 6'6" you will get more waves more enjoyment and more stoke all it takes is practice and determination and once you become a surfer after a few thousand waves or more have been caught you will experience the same joy and happiness that us surfers enjoy " just dont tell anybody how great it is we like to keep it a secret"

Long boarding is very pretty:) I don't get why short boarders knock on it all the time, I've done both and they're both fun in their own ways! But long boarding motions are far prettier in my opinion, more about flow than top to bottom speed!

Bigger board = less drag (amount of your body submerged in the water) Which means its easier to catch waves. As you can see the surfers in this video barely have to paddle because there is minimal drag holding them back. And because their boards are big, the weight of the surfer is also distributed over a larger surface area and that keeps their body out out of the water. To cut a long story short. Get a bigger board.
