Charles Joseph I surfed there for years including playa grande and witches which is also teeming with crocs and have even seen them in the surf.
The issue is the tour guides that feed them which changes their eating habits and behavior.
Btw your assessment of tamarindo is spot on. The locals suck there. And jaco/hermosa is much the same too. Bunch of expats that think they own the break and locals have the biggest chip on their shoulder you'd think they were protecting sunset or pipe. It's ridiculous. The ego in the water there is disgusting. Bunch of insecure wanna be shredders.

No crocs in this vid but they are all over the ocean and beach in Tamarindo and Playa Grande. I would never surf there!

Anyone know how far away this is from Roca Bruja?

+magentawave We left from Tamarindo, which is pretty far north, to get to Roca Bruja which is pretty close to the Nicaraguan border. A trip to Roca Bruja from San Jose would be pretty far considering San Jose is in the center of the country.

+magentawave It took us about an hour and a half by car, then another 2 hour boat ride to get there when I went.

I was in tamarindo last June. Epic place. Great surfs. Awesome food (Pangas, Seasons, Patagonia) are 3 best places to eat. Loads of cool people and cold beer. Can't wait to go back. Pura Vida

Sweet!! +transam6x6 you're going to love it. If you want an amazing chef to come cook you gourmet ass dinner one night, hit up BellyFedBetter (Frank is his name). Highly recommended. American ex pat, awesome cook.

Also, if you surf Langosta, make sure to do so at high tide. Crazy ass rocks. Watched a dude bust his thruster in 3 pieces, nearly broke his neck, too. High risk + High reward.

Tamarindo is way more gentle. Good luck!

+transam6x6 generally tamarindo fires from spring--summer. Surfed in June/July 2015 and was pretty stellar. Coco Beach and Hermosa are supposedly great too. Can't wait to head back.
