We were all kooks once unless you start young surfing is probably the hardest sport in the world . It's not really a sport but a lifestyle, If you do see someone in the ocean struggling be nice help them out ,you might just save someone's life

I remember watching an English backpacker at my surfing spot in Australia when I was about 13. There were a bunch of us laughing at this guy just getting smashed like in this video...but he never gave up, so we all paddled out to him and ended up teaching him for a about 5 weeks everyday and he got so much better. We took his board back to the shop, got a refund for him and lent him a foam board. It was sad to see him leave as we all actually took him in, looked after him and he became addicted to surfing and he would hang with us for hours a day. I’m sure he’ll never forget it. Locals, look after the tourist please!

last week i was just about to head out in semi - rough conditions in Sydney and some random female korean tourist carrying a 5'9 performance board casually walks up to me and says 'hey...quick question , what do i do ? just wait for the wave and stand up?'

it was literally her first time carrying a board, let alone hitting the water and the rip was so strong that day, you were only allowed to swim between the flags.

I told her not to go out there because she's putting not only herself in danger, but shes a danger to the other surfers, explained to her why she shouldnt be on a PU board and to go get some lessons down the road and hire a foamy.

I don't understand why surfers are so against newcomers in their sport. Skating and snowboarding have their fair share of insecure dickheads, for sure, but overall it seems that they (and I) want to welcome beginners to our sport. I don't know why I find the most insecure dickheads in surfing.

Say what you want about the first guy, I felt absolutely terrible when he went to jump in and he smashed his (probably new) pretty white board right onto that rock. Thankfully it looked like his fins weren't destroyed but that doesn't mean they were ok. Could have been molded to the board and pointless if the deck is fucked
