The Best (As in Worst) Surfing Wipeouts of 2016

Wipeouts never get old. Performance surfing grows by leaps and bounds every year, but eating shit has essentially remained the same for decades. But we never, ever tire of watching it and hearing the stories behind it. Because, and here's the thing: surfers are generally horrible when it comes to talking about their own surfing. But they are amazing when recounting almost dying. Not sure why, but it's true. Greatest Wipeouts is a Surfline original series showcasing death-defying surfing wipeouts, near-death experiences and heaviest waves of all time. Honest question: why are they attached to the board with a leash? Wouldn’t you want to be as far from it as possible while wiping out?

My worst wipe out was in Morocco i was there to surf 6 to 9 feet max and after a day of surfing 8 feet i was feeling good then a big 10+ feet wave came i did not know it was going to be so big i total messed up dropped out of the wave hit the bottom was held under for over a min leash snapped which was first time for me soon as i got up next wave owned me again under for a long time by the time i was swimming i was so tired from lack of oxygen i could not even move my arms lucky for me a Australian girl was paddling out and found me i was so close to dying it put me off ever trying big waves again. And yes 10+ feet is big to me i'm English i learned on 3 feet waves

I use to love getting knocked out by waves, I dont know why but its makes me feel so alive, while hurricane irma was taking place I went to the beach far out into the ocean, there was this one huge wave that I remember just looking up at it for a good 2 seconds and actually whispering to myself "oh boy.." the wave struck me down and flung me a good 20 feet before my surf board got stuck in the sand and the leash was attatched to me, I had to swim over to it and pull the board out of the sand and the wave was still pushing me, I kept being flung by the wave for another good 5 seconds before my face smacked the shore and I was stared at by everyone, honestly.. I wasn't scared. I was having the time of my life, in the middle of the wave (When my board wasnt stuck in the sand) I remembered doing front flips and back flips, that was a good time. Luckily I didnt get injured.

HigherPlanes

Ahh, makes sense. Sorry LOL, bad advice from a novice surfer.
RiotAlliance
RiotAlliance - 7 years ago
HigherPlanes they can't because of the force of the top if you use the inflatable you will match the speed of the wave witch means the peak of it will hit you and in the mavericks and waves like those the waves can hit you wit up to 30 tons witch will kill you
HigherPlanes

I stayed with my brother for a week in california once and I wanted to go swimming so badly so they took me out to this beach and they left to go get snowcones real quick and I wanted to see how far out I could go so I swam out super far and this humongous wave just formed and I look up and it completely knocked me out and I honestly thought it was gonna drag me out so far I couldn't get back without another one forming and just keep taking me back but I fought with all my might to get to shore and so I know what it's like to be totally defenseless compared to a wave, awful and super terrifying

Man I almost drown when I'm on top of a 4 meter wave and get sucked in . Also I don't practice it so I just do bodyboarding occasionally on vacation so I'm not trained whatsoever. It's such a bad feeling . I know I should be calm or whatever but I like , I don't panic but it's almost like it ... I try to reach for something when I'm getting thrown around by the wave and that's the part that scares me because idk why it takes like forever to come up and when I'm underwater idk where I am and I can't find something to hold on to

CrynoKing good points. I agree that you probably wouldn't feel pain. Most shark attack survivors say they didn't feel pain during the attack. The pain happens later if you're lucky. Most shark attack survivors also say they were fully aware of what was happening when they were attacked. They recall feeling sheer terror, and an immense urge to survive. So if there's a 100% chance you're gonna get eaten, it's best if the shark bites you real good the first time.
Guess you don't have to choose... You could drown in a huge wave; then get eaten by a shark.
So, as Towelie once said, "I choose... both!"
CrynoKing
CrynoKing - 7 years ago
Tiger, your body would go numb, and you wouldn't feel a thing. Chances are you'd faint if the torso down would be cut off. Even if it was a leg, your body would probably numb the unsevered part. Don't get me wrong, it's still horrible, but I'd rather get eaten. Actually, now that I think about it, I'd rather drown because then at least people could bury me. If no one knows where my body was, I'd rather get eaten, but if they knew, I'd drown.
Tiger H. Lore
Tiger H. Lore - 7 years ago
MyName Jeff is a smart guy. That's most likely how you would experience death-by-shark. In other words, you'd know what attacked you. You'd flail in the water for a minute or two, bleeding out as the shark circled. You'd notice your missing limb, shredded flesh, perhaps your organs floating out of you. Then you might watch as the shark starts to eat you. Or maybe it'd just grab you and drag you into the deep--where you'd drown.
I'll pick the wave.
MyName Jeff
MyName Jeff - 7 years ago
Sierra Not likely... It would probably take a chunk out of you and then come back for more or leave you to bleed to death.
CrynoKing
CrynoKing - 7 years ago
I'd rather get killed by a shark because you don't know you're going to die until it bites you, and when you're drowning you know you're going to die. However, both are still equally feared from my perspective lol

Goll Koll I'm a swimmer . I'm not varsity level but I'm decent . My 50 free is a 25.9. I started surfing a month ago on a longboard and have been wiped out on 4ft waves in Galveston. Yea sure it's nothing. It's fun. But when you surf you'll know 4ft waves aren't just jokes. Some of them are serious and they'll hit you hard. They'll hit the wind right out of you. So it takes up more energy and harder for you to hold your breath. Plus you'll be worrying about your board hitting your head. The waves you see in the video are fucking terrifying man and definitely no competitive swimmer will surf that , wipeout, and say it was "nothing". Haha

Those waves are monstrous and can kill you easily. If u wanna get "wiped out" by one, go to the shallowish part of the water, the waves are still pretty big but if it crashes in you, you still get thrown and blah blah but you will most likely get scratched by the sand.

A wave pool is not close to a 35-foot wave able to put 6000 pounds off on a person, including the fact that they weigh over 400 tons. People wiping out due to large waves can be brought under the surface for over a minute. Honestly, if you really think it's not scary or hard just go and make your merry way to pipeline so you can rethink your thoughts.

You don't get it....I'm a surfer and cliff jumper, I'm sponsored Im pretty damn good at both and I still fear wiping out on the board or the cliff. I'm a crazy strong swimmer (I've been swimming since I was 5) and I've been trained how to fall off of waves, and even when I would enter the water correctly your knees and gut would still hurt, you think you can wipeout till you fall on your back/ side/ stomach; I've entered wrong from heights 10-80 feet and I've broken bones and damaged nerves... a fall from a 10 foot wave with the water crashing onto could knock you out cold at best, at worst make u a vegetable. Imagine falling onto concrete then having a wave of rocks hit you in the face at the same time your being bent in half as the undercurrent pulls you down underwater, your knees get pulled to your face and slam into your nose...that's the tamest scenario on what it feels like. No one should ever wish to wipe out on any water sport, especially on big wave surfing....the ocean is a beast and it will eat you Alive.
CarolineJade
CarolineJade - 7 years ago
If you were really that big on science you would know about this little thing called surface tension. When you fall out of a plane or jump off a high surface onto water, because you reach such a speed from a fall that big, the water becomes hard as concrete. I wouldn't expect you to understand that concept though since you sound like you just entered first grade and threw together some words that sounded scientific to you. Also, you clearly haven't surfed since you've never been held down by a wave. Last thing, *you're.
Goll Koll
Goll Koll - 7 years ago
Ya you are a "dumbass omg" don't jump out of any planes that's dangerous unless you have water to fall into to break your fall. Because water can take in your G-Force. That's what happens in the wave your going at an average velocity and the wave absorbs your inertia and you just ride it out. Simply af and fun! Science!
Goll Koll
Goll Koll - 7 years ago

Austin Liu

That logic is broken. You know a guy survived from a failed parachute deployment when he was skydiving. That doesn't mean that I'm going to survive if I jumped out of a plane dumbass omg
CarolineJade
CarolineJade - 7 years ago
Did you even watch the video? One of those guys got his fucking shoulder shattered as soon as he hit the water. No amount of swimming skills are going to help you in an instance like that. I should know, I'm an experienced swimmer and even on a four-foot wave, it holds you down so much that you can't even move enough to swim. On top of that, waves as big as the ones in the video crush the air out of you and force water into your nose simultaneously. No amount of breath control is going to help you there.

Goll Koll 1. When falling into a large wave it becomes as hard as a brick wall whilst traveling at the speed of a small car
2 if you tumble on top lf the wave after a wipe out you do not know when to take a breath as you are disoriented
3. You are scared your board will come back and hit you and sometimes ot does
4. These pro surfers have swam there whole life which is longer than you and they are more physically fit than most people but still some of them die out there
5. Waves of these sizes are unpredictable and don't always bring you back up to the top of the surface
Yeah I admit if I KNEW i wasn't gonna die that would be fun af but most likely I would die and so would you unless you have surfed your whole life which you failed to mention

Devon Smith - 7 years ago
Mavericks is outside of town near the harbor if you are in HMB and go north on highway 1 toward SF it's basically right under the giant radar thing that looks like a vanilla Ice cream cone or a golf ball on a tee. But ya the time of year does matter the big waves are usually around this time of year winter-spring

Tim Perry "as the crow falls" Gold
Tim Perry
Tim Perry - 7 years ago
Nah, it's about 12 feet as the crow falls and closer to 15 when you consider the total trajectory of the arc. Add the velocity of the water coming at you in the opposite direction, and the impact would feel like a 20 foot fall. Closer to 20 than 5. We also need to consider depth distortion due to a telephoto lense, any drugs in his system that excuse him from reality, and the bragging rights he gets for putting his life in danger. Chicks love a guy who almost dies to impress them, so if you can weave a 20 foot fall or a couple tiger sharks you falcon punched into your story, all the better.

It's all about pussy. That's all this is. The crazy shit some dudes will do for the keys to unlimited pussy. If you don't have looks, money, brains or charms, you need to go primal and show off the the thing you do have: BIG BALLS.

I have surfed waimea bay and to be honest...most people only get held under for about 7 seconds. I know it sounds like not much but that is just an average. 30 seconds would be a really long hold down. You have to take into account the adrenaline and cardio workout of paddling in. Plus, you need to get a deep breath just before you go under. Couple that with trying to physically hold your arms and legs in. It makes 10 seconds feel like you almost drowned, even though it is a mere 10 seconds. If I got held under for 3 minutes I would be unconscious as would 99% of people. Try sprinting 10M then hold your breath for 3 minutes while getting hit by a car. Then just die.
Lost Soulz
Lost Soulz - 7 years ago
Fox Fam exactly! A 3ft wave throws you like a rag doll. these dudes are very strong and can hold their breath for 3-4 minutes.
Fox Fam
Fox Fam - 7 years ago
people need to realize that the power of a 1ft wave is like someone punching you "lightly" with a boxing glove. It's water but it doesn't feel like it when it's moving like that. So the power just increases from there. Then add in getting hit by your board(or someone else's) and hitting the bottom and you could definitely die from any size wave.

Well everything looks bigger from the surfers perspective. a 4ft wave can look like it's 6ft and when you're spooked out it will look like it's 8ft

The concept is fabulous, as in almost all that you guys do, all the time. But its "final product" could've been better.

First, the Sound. Some are perfectly audible, some are messed up - and who's the "genius" who thought to add a bg music to the last episode?

Please, don't do it, ever again. Let the guys speak as clearly and crispy as possible, as their thing is "to Surf", not "to Speak", you see? You'll be amazed at how to so many people around the World most surfers sound as if they're speaking some sort of a Jupiter's obscure dialect, with their own slang, Grammar Rules, sounds, laughs in the middle of some words, and so on.

Your channel is watched by millions of people, from many Cultures & Languages. Not everyone of them is friends with a "Black Trunk dude", you know?

Second, you could refrain to intertwine so much images and speeches, to avoid a "videoclip" feeling. Remember: "Surf is Fluency", like Master Tom Curren taught us all. My suggestion: firstly, show the whole (uncut) footage; then, let the guy speaks, explaining the whole ordeal; then, show the footage (uncut) again, so it ends up "illustrating" the narrative of its main actor, not "burdening" and/or "messing" it up for us, the viewers.

Third and final suggestion: you could very well make it longer. I'm sure there's plenty of other wipeouts out there in your records - and we're kind of a sadistic bunch of crazy dudes, y'know? j/k... \o/...

Or, also, you could've ask the Legends about it. I'm sure there's lots of seasoned veterans who'll love to give their takes on why some people messes up in this or in that wave so often. Like: ask Gerry about Pipe, and Manoa about Teahupoo, Laird about Pe'ahi, and so on.

Ok, time's up. Gotta go.

Love you guys! Have a good one!
