I started surfing at 14 in 1962 and did it religiously for 40 years intel my back went out, I first saw Joel when he was 13 at Cardiff reef, and told my son that he would be a World champion long border one day, not to mention I saw Tyler grow up with the Doheny surf club as I was in that club for many years, so good to see that these young Surf Stars doing so well, great surf movie Joel, I gave you a surf photo of you in the barrel at Salt Creek, your an amazing Surfer. Not only Cali. I understand that good waves are a "limited resource" but the whole attitude of the little clicks who think they discovered a spot or whatnot are so prevalent in surfing, even here in southern new England. It's sad. They love the word kooks but haven't figured out that they're the kooks! Give respect, get respect. ...teach someone proper etiquette, don't yell or beat them out of the water.

kinda pretentious to purposely exclude surfers from the contest because they surf small waves on a shortboard. its pretty fun. just like riding a longboard. hmm, you know what? it just hit me, surfings always fun!! no matter if youre nose riding or blowing tail out the back of a waste high face.
contests have already turned stoked little rippers into entitled performers (admitidly i do really enjoy watching wsl events) and now i find a contest urging kids to be as unoriginal as possible. to be as joel tudor as possible. attention hogs make surfing look ridiculously different from what it really is. surfing is one of the most unique experiences capable on this planet yet it requires so little. what else could you possibly ask it for? but seriously who would give 2 shits to surf with an asshole who cares about what board you ride. as long as theyre CONSIDERATE id be fine with a wavejet sup in the lineup for all i care. thanks california surf scene for making it cool to be a prick in the water.

Agreed. My first board was really lucky....I got an amazing used shaped high performance longboard trifin for $400 from my local shop. I bought it at age 22, the first time in my life I both had access to the beach and also had access to a spare $400.

I didn't ride that board because it fits the conditions...I road it because it was all I could afford. Luckily that baby matches everything from 1 foot -> 2ft overhead.

But judge my surfing because I suck (because I do.). Don't judge anyone by the gear they can afford.

And by "the gear they can afford" I mean, of course, the gear their parents can afford. B/c for most even if they are 20 years old and "buying their own gear" I'm sure mommy and daddy are still paying their food, home, car insurance, etc....so ya....what mommy and daddy can afford.

I find it to be very satisfying that the best Longboarder on the face of the earth has the best, most healthy attitude to all of surfing that there could be. Turning his back on competitive surfing because people took it too seriously and forgot what they were doing it for in the first place - classic. Yes he speaks his mind openly and that is completely right but he doesn't slag people in a shallow rude manner. Instead he is completely articulate and structured in his comments and thinking. A great film that I enjoy as much as Endless Summer 1 and Golden Breed in that it's really "about" something and not just highly polished crap. His attitude is spreading too which can only be a good thing. Good on you Joel - Stan - UK

Joel, You have realigned my kid's perspective on surfing. They finally get it. It's not all about slashing up all over the face...all the time...right board for the right wave. Thanks to you they (3 of 'em) now have the full appreciation of what surfing CAN be. Remember the first wave I rode properly at Curl Curl Bch in 1968...still going for a dawn patrol 45 years later. Have a go mate...the thrill like most water sports is turning at speed on water whether surfing, skiing, skating whatever...you will never forgive yourself if you don't give it a go. Surfed this morning at the local break in Qld...4:30 am, no one about, sun rising and the water like bathing in velvet...never take it for granted.

I'm 24 and started last month. Made a few surf lessons (my teacher started at 35, now he's 50 and works as a surf teacher!) You are definitiley not old to begin!

Well, I had my first surf lesson at 38 e got a custom made longboard the week I turned 41. You're definitly not to old.

Sooo... do we think nose riding is so cool that it has actually become uncool - and therefore it's cool? If I ride a thruster at dawn when it's 6 feet and the wind is coming from the northeast, does that make me a kook? =)
