The Story of Surf with Mariowned

Surf has been around in Counter Strike since 2004. I spoke with Mariowned, who designed the first surf maps at the age of 14, and is still making them to this day! Thank you.
do you know about slide maps? they're surf maps designed for sv_airaccelerate 10. most of the records for them are hosted at cosy-climbing. it's more than likely that none of those maps would exist without surf maps.

hell yeah, the new one looks awesome and very unique, thanks for being a cool dude my dude.
I used to play lots of surf back in the day before source and after.
It always made me feel like Valve's engine was better than all comparisons/competitors.
Also happy birthday Mariowned- hope u had a good one :)
it was only in css that I learned they were "surf"

I remember I played all sorts of surf maps (surf_ski2, surf_ski5, surf_tutorial, ninja etc.)
And I LOVED it.
Still to this day I play surf servers in CS:GO and still enjoy playing it.
I also thought those gamemodes were older than 2004.
Thank you Mariowned for these memories!
But still I just wanna say thank you.
thx so much for this mod!

I stopped playing with my friends when all they wanted to do was surfing, I stopped playing CS eventually after that.
Thanks for everything, dude
Your gamemode that you created, you should be so proud about. I have nearly 15 hundred hours put into your gamemode and it has really helped me in some very difficult times in my life. Some times where I really wanted to give up. It's hard to pinpoint why, maybe it's therapeutic, maybe it helps me think when I really didn't want to. I am out of that place now but you were a huge shadowed impact and I can never thank you enough.
And I started watching videos of people trying to finish the map (and many others that came after it) as fast as possible.
Thank you for all that you've done back in the day. And godspeed on your future projects!!!
Cheers from Argentina
thank u kind sir
I never really gave it a thought, that these maps were made by Fans.
I think at the time of CS 1.6 I was like.. what? Maybe 10-11 Years old?
I mean I'm 25 now and I still think back. And it's honestly Goose-Bump inducing to find out most of these Maps I played were actually made by the Inventor of that particular gamemode.
I feel kind of honored to have been part of this History.

Hats off to the originators.
(Srry for bad english)
Thanks to him there are tons of people who are loving surf (I'm one of them).
I still play surf from time to time, it's alot of fun :)
This carried until I was almost 18, and CS:S had been out for quite some time... I still had a potato PC, but would often come home drunk from hanging out with friends, and pass out at my computer after surfing/climbing for hours... I sunk so many hours into Egypt, and Aztec... Thank you Mariowned...
The days man...
Spend some time Mariowneds stream. He's such a great guy if you ask me. So many positive vibes!
EDIT: Also, Happy birthday! :)

Q: have you made at least any money on that? Donations are counted.
can't believe it was 15 years ago, feels like yesterday :( one of the few times when I realized i'm getting old :D
keep up with the good work, brings back so many memories :)
But I played Aperture Tag, which has a few surf-inspired levels, where you use your gel gun to rush through rooftop-like panels, with a more streamlined, Aperture Science feel to it. So in a way, I've played something that Mariowned inspired!
no regrets
You can see by the comments how many people you've actually made happy with the whole thing
You're amazing
Surfing 1000mph through the map is such an amazing feeling, like pure freedom. Looking forward to blast some Prodigy and surf the new surf_egypt!
ok
Thank you a lot and happy birthday. The only reason why I got into cs was because of surf. The game mode interested me so much back in 2012, that I just absolutely had to get the game, and when I did, I wasn't disappointed. I started with CSS first and it was absolute fun, it truly helped me forget about certain life problems and might even be the only reason why I'm into videogames, considering cs was the first video game that I actually wanted to install and play instantly. I then moved to cs 1.6, where I found it slightly less fun because the game wasn't visually as appealing and gameplay wise not as modern as css, and when I first heard about csgo in 2014, the first thing I wanted to see was if it had surf maps, although not many, it did. I was ecstatic, I just couldn't wait and asked my mother to buy the game for me, although the only issue I had was that my computer could barely run the game. I ended up playing csgo occasionally, but still played css and cs 1.6 nearly daily. Surf was the game mode that brought me to cs, steam, valve as a whole. It opened my brain to so many more games (due to steam) and I was able to find many more games that after over 5 years are still my favorite.
The main point I'm trying to make is that surf was what made me so involved in the gaming industry and I can't thank you enough for that. I am glad I'm a part of this game, although often meeting toxic people, and being a toxic person myself (luckily mainly to toxic people). Once again thank you so, so much. I don't think I'd be into gaming at all by now, because of how late I'd have found out about csgo and all these other games, I'm glad that surf blew up on YouTube and somehow, me, the normie kid that was watching minecraft videos (mostly) got a cs video in my recommended.
Now, for the last time, thank you, I wish you a happy birthday and I hope you get to live a happy rest of your life, because I sure will, with video games.
This is crazy that I only now heard about him, that he is the creator of the gamemode surf.
I have been surfing for so long, and I can consider myself a decent surfer aswell
Thank you mario !
Unfortunately, he has passed away since. every once in a while I'll boot up the game and play the same maps he showed me and remember all the good times and laughs we had. Thanks for letting that happen mariowned. :)
Also, thank you very much for this amazing invention and happy birthday man!
I'm not starting drama, just asking..
Gotta admit I've never really been into surfing, I came to CS pretty late, starting with CS:GO, so I may have never played your maps. I tried a bunch of times and I wasn't too good, but it was fun. It was a challenge and I enjoyed it. I wanted to improve at the game, so I spent more time on dm and 5v5, and if I just wanted to have fun, I often went for a zombie escape or jailbreak instead, because I knew I'd be frustrated if I tried surfing again :D Anyway, thanks for what you've done and what you keep doing for our community, you've changed lives of thousands of people. Though I don't really play as much these days (school and all that), I'll make sure to find some time to check out the map you're working on once it's done. I'm sure it will be amazing
And happy birthday, you literarly made my Childhood, Me and my friends here in Sweden was surfing all the time
you are now 30...you were then 14...Happy Birthday !
it took me exactly 2 tries to figure out how to surf
I won't forget you
I used to surf a lot back in the 1.6 and Source days. But primarily on dm servers with maps like surf_ski_2, rather than the more challenging maps where you need a doormat for a mouse pad. But I do love those maps, too. I regularly watch the videos from KSFrecords (stuff like this is just awesome: /watch?v=Awld0PXTfs0), partially to discover music, but also because some maps are just so fascinating to watch. CS surfing is super stylish and quintessentially videogamey. It's also a great video game adaptation of downhill sports. As a mountain biker myself, I often wonder how you could make a game that feels like blazing down a trail, but I cannot think of something better than surf maps.
My favorite surf map so far is surf_summer, which is yours?
The rules are simple!
The goal is to keep the flag for the maximum time to get the maximum points.
You spawn at a random position with 1500 speed.
Killing a player gives you 2 pt, and you recover 10HP and armor.
Dying or losing the flag makes you loose 1 point.
After dying you just wait 8 sec and press JUMP to respawn
About the flag :
It spawns randomly somewhere in the map(predefined location)
Grabbing the flag gives you 2 points + 1 pt every 30 sec.
Killing a player while carrying gives you 1 more points.
Killing the flag carrier gives you an additional point.
When you die with the flag other ppl have 15 sec to catch it up before respawn(you can't skip the player respawn timer).
Falling in jail makes you loose the flag (it respawn randomly after 5 sec)
After 30 sec carrying you start loosing HP at a rate of 4hp/5sec.
After 90 sec, Fall damages are ON for you, GLHF.
After 15 minutes the one with the most points wins(it extends as long as the flag is in play)
There are also booster zeus rewards when you get 5 kills in a row, special propelling grenades with bugfixed behaviour and trajectory, dedicated ranking.
Looking forward for any suggestions/feedback on this.
Message to the community : I'm looking for a map maker for my second project : TeamBased 2-flag CTF (warsong gulch style). It was my original idea for CTF-Rabbit but thing is, there isn't any surf map fitting this idea, it would need its own dedicated maps but it would be loads of fun and it would add some teamplay to combat surf.

14 year olds in 2019 : intense mic screaming
2004(15yr old): made surf maps
YOU'RE AN ABSOLUTE MADLAD
<3
If anyone of you has a Surf deathmatch with a good community pls help me reconnect with the old days :)
Happy birthday my dude.
^^
I had a hard time in Uni and it was always nice to know I can go home put some good music on and just enjoy the mesmerizing kinda hypnotic effect of surfing. Ok we rage at hard maps and scream of of frustration when a ramp bug kills your time or a map drives us to the limit of our skill. But the feeling of conquering a map and becoming better is one of the sweetest pleasures out there.
Thank you very much. Have a wonderful day.
Never played any of the surf maps in CSs, but I spent like 3-4 years of my life in HL2DM and TF2 surfing with random people (my friends couldn't surf lol) and I absolutely loved it!
