Per: www.oldiesmusic.com/news.htm
Jim Fuller, lead guitarist with the Surfaris and co-writer of their hit,
"Wipe Out" (#2* in 1963 and #16 in 1966) died Friday (March 3rd, 2017)
in Monrovia, California. Known as the "Godfather of Surf Music", he was
69 years old...
May he R.I.P.
* "Wipe Out" peaked at #2 for one week, and the #1 record for that week
was "Fingertips, Part Two" by Little Stevie Wonder. The B-Side of "Wipe
Out", "Surfer Joe", also made the Top 100, it reached #49 and stayed on the chart for
six weeks, the quartet had one other Top 100 record, "Point Panic", it
peaked at #49 in 1963...

Handsome Package
Handsome Package - 8 years ago
That's very interesting. My family lived in the Cucamonga area since the 1800's and I never knew Surfer Joe was recorded here in town until the mid 80's. It was one of my favorite songs. There was a lot of music that came out of that studio which I read about. Early 60's Rock N Roll Bands from Pomona.
Now there was also another Safaris right? the guys who recorded Wipe Out or was it the same band that your folks handled
I used to like the Mothers Of Invention in the 60's. Back then I thought Zappa was from Chino. But he was from all over So. Cal. The arrest that I knew of was the one at Chaffey College where he was busted for Streaking.
The turtles was one of my favorite Bands. I like their first hit "It Ain't Me Babe" reminds me of the summer of 65". And "You Showed Me"
For being a small town there was a lot going on here. I heard that old diner next door to the old gas station on Foothill near Archibald was used for the original "Blob" with Steve McQueen.
cakraft24
cakraft24 - 8 years ago
Zappa lived at the studio for a while. I had a lot of buddies and knew some girls that would hang around there, when he owned it. I knew the vice squad guys that busted him, and his dad was a sub teacher in my classes for a few years. My folks handled The Safaris and The Turtles, for a local concert. There was a lot going on back then, and it was a smaller world.
"Brown Shoes -Don't Make It", is my favorite Zappa tune.

this was a hit in the south bay communities in socal well before it went national. I can't really describe his voice, let me just say it is totally "surfer voice" from that time. Surfaris, Dick Dale, The Trashmen.....they were what we listened to way back then. The Beach Boys were looked upon as phonies, hell, they played at my High School *morningside) and believe me, they stunk!! Phonies all the way. Not quite hodads, just wannabes.

"Woodie". Second hand hearses. Bill Dana as Jose Jimenez said "Good for taking surfboards to the beach, also good for bringing surfers back from the beach..",
CHuD Wah
CHuD Wah - 8 years ago
+John Casper

Nope. Woodies are wood-bodied station wagons. As the name implies, they were developed to haul passengers and luggage to and from train stations. Eventually, the wood became just trim on a metal body, then plastic with vinyl decals, and eventually disappeared.

Woodies became popular with surfers because used ones were cheap and big enough to haul boards. Some surfers did use old hearses, as well as sedan deliveries, for the same reasons.

+Max Headroom Willie Nelson might not have a great singing voice, but there is something distinctive about it that makes it very listenable, the same can be said about Rod Stewart, Jagger's voice is no better, nor worse than most lead singers from 60's bands. I think the best and most versatile white male voice from the 70's belongs to Boz Scaggs. Tried to think of a black guy with a bad voice, but can't think of any, though I do find the histrionics that pass for a lot of female black singers inferior to a lot of female white singers, my top 3 female singers being Anastacia, Celline Dion and Liza Stansfield followed by 2 soul ladies Anita Baker and Toni Braxton.
Margaret McClurkin

+Max Headroom   Rod Stewart once said that Mick Jagger's singing voice is not bad but his (Stewart's) is better.
Max Headroom
Max Headroom - 9 years ago
+porygonlover322 Funny you should say that. People like Willie Nelson, Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan (Robert Zimmerman), Rod Stewart have terrible singing voices. They were only successful because their audiences were always stoned.

FYI, almost all white male singers have terrible voices. A few white guys like Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett had good voices, among some others. But when you look at the universe of white male singers, from 1960's and forward, most had horrible voices and loud back up music to disguise it.

On the other hand, almost every black male singer had good singing voice. Some were better than others, but I can't think of one black male singer who even approaches the description terrible.
