+rubberswan I kinda disagree, the Lively Ones version is cool, but this one is much more groovin' in my opinion. Guitar work is better here too. The sax solo is cool in the LO version, but their drummer keeps speeding up through the track too. Both are great, still prefer this one though.

The combination of the two rhythm guitars with Nokie Edwards Lead is a great sound! If I'm not mistaken, the name change was made by the band who copied this song from the Ventures. But yes, "Spudnik" was composed by Nokie Edwards.

surfrider was orginally titled "spudnik" and composed by nokie edwards of the ventures. when the surf craze hit they renamed it surf rider to fit on their surfing album. the lively ones made a hit of it with a sax. later it was used in pulp fiction.

+David Sutton actually according to Don Wilson of The Ventures, the Lively Ones were the ones who changed the name, because they actually stole the track and claimed authorship. The Ventures attorney made the LOs cgive credit back to the ventures, but the song was already a hit under that name so the Ventures re-released it on Surfing with the Lively Ones title.

None of the various live versions of this song have ever captured the interaction between the rythym guitars, lead and bass (played by Nokie apparently) that you can hear here. This version remains as one of my all-time favourite guitar songs.
