You are actually worng, the first surfer in human kind ?
Its hilarious but...he was a Rabi called Rabi Akiva.
He lived in the 1st and 2nd hundred AC. Lived until the age of 120, died in 136 AC. <---
In one of the stories he mentioned a time when his ship was caught in a storm and started to sink.
--> He managed to get hold on a flat board and saved his live: by catching passing waves until he reached to shore.
P.S. :
This record is prior 1500 years to captain cook diaries! And place him as the first surfer in the history of human kind!

Just a funny fact :-)

Crystal Clod
Crystal Clod - 6 years ago
Giorgio Dellapiane no they wouldn't, you can't just catch waves and travel, you can only do that about a mile out to sea, then you need to use a sail, like they did.
Giorgio Dellapiane
Giorgio Dellapiane - 6 years ago
Yes, they would sometimes catch waves and ride them all the way to a different country. There are records of Hawaiian islanders catching waves from Hawaii to California and then a couple of days later catching another wave back.

Europeans were surprised with how quickly they could move from country to country, while their boats were much slower.

Nice production but there is an integral chapter missing- more relevant than mentioning Peru & Africa. The Polynesian Culture began in Tonga. Surfing in Tonga was already an elitist activity of great cultural importance before being directly introduced to Hawai'i. Surfing in Tonga & Hawai'i shared a unique status unlike anywhere else in Polynesia. Surfing in Tonga is called fānifo and a surfboard is a papafānifo. Heke ngalu is also acknowledged as wave sliding like the Hawai'ian he'e nalu. Unfortunately the pre-history of surfing is always brushed over in this manner.
Also where did you get that map of Australia?

Sliding a wave removes our brains out of the ordinary and slips us into the extra ordinary of being there now. No more worries about mortgages or strife of being poor or rich. When you enter the domain of an ocean cylinder, that moment, those split seconds belong to the Zen part of just being. Period.

Thanks to certain media like games and cartoons, surfing feels way too modern for me to comprehend that the sport is much older than once thought. I knew it had connections with Hawaii but like with tropes such as Surfer Dude, I assumed this was just a stereotype. But this is actually quite fascinating to me. Never would I have imagined it to be so richly based on cultural status. This definitely has given me some inspiration for a culture I've created for a story.

As an added note, a character I am inexplicably infatuated with is pretty much a Surfer Dude... but I love him for it.

This is so cool i was just wondering about this. My great grandpa was native Hawaiian and used to talk about his secret perfect surf spot, i think it was cliffside so he had to paddle out to it. Im not really a surfer so i don't know. This would have been probably in the 1930s and probably somewhere around Oahu. I would love to know where it was and see it but sadly he passed away in 2012. It's kind of crazy to think about people surfing this far back!

As I learn more and more history, I realized something.
Imagine how many cultures or even technological advances we wouldn't be puzzled about while reading documents of european colonizers if they didn't mess up other places in the first place. The global language is english and many of scientific or literary foundation today came from white cultures, though we know east asia is also rich of pioneers and thats because its one of the least influenced by white cultures. Now imagine if europe was colonized/exploited by another culture and majority of natives were massacred (like what they always did), they wouldn't be able to progress that much and their literary documents and scientific discoveries/progress (either from 1000AD or 1900AD) would be lost in history. Including kepler, darwin, newton and other geniuses. So saying that colonization is good since it brings progess, no its not. It brings progress to only one culture then completely or partially erase another.

As a non-European/American, I want to say that by no means were the Europeans alone in harming native cultures.

I noticed a lot of people antagonizing them as destroyers of cultures. Yes, due to the power put in their hands, they were the ones to do it to the largest degree. However, conquest and suppression have been a global pattern, and any other peoples would have destroyed others' cultures as the Europeans had if they were put in the same situation.

So I just want to make sure the whole cultural destruction thing isn't associated wholly with race.

The diversity of Hawaii mainly stems from the immigrant workers who traveled from various nations to work on sugarcane plantations (starting around the 1850’s) when the U.S. invested economic interest in Hawaii.

Danielle M I don't think it's fair to say that it's because they were European, or because of their skin color. When ever empires spread they always eliminate culture when possible, because it makes colonization easier. And the affects of many historical empires is still felt today in negative and positive ways. My overall point being while European colonization did awful things, it's definitely closer to the norm rather than being exceptionally bad.
Daniel Tracey
Daniel Tracey - 6 years ago
There are legitimate reasons to be critical of colonisation and imperialism, however white Europeans actually do have culture that they didn't "steal" it from others, what are you talking about?
European culture has had the strongest influence in the world for the last 500 years, the Gregorian calendar is considered the world standard, European languages have been the lingua Franca for hundreds of years, a European religion is the most popular on earth.
Can I ask, have you ever been to Europe? you won't find cathedrals like they have in Europe anywhere else. European artists are the most famous on earth, American cultural influence is the strongest on earth.
It's just a blatant falsehood.

Danielle M They should take a note from Japan's book. It basically invaded east and southeast Asia and so far seem to have a sparkling reputation compared to European empires. Either because they stayed for less than a decade and/or because they were actually defeated in war.

Itka Maax Exactly . I’m all for traveling and exploring different regions and making your ways known but a lot of colonists and missionaries seemed to have thought this equated to completely belittling and erasing everyone else’s . And it’s actually sad, I pity white europeans/americans in particular because these days especially you see a lot of them travel to foreign countries just to “get cultured” or “find themselves” because they literally have none of their own.. their ancestors felt like they had to steal it from others . Or it was erased by the spread of christianity which is a whole other thing within itself haha

Suomalainen _ 368 “atleast for the most part” see you don’t even know what you’re talking about. Don’t justify those devils . Instead learn some real history you goofy kid.
Danielle M

LagiNaLangAko23 which is exactly why when people talk about colonists in a bad light they refer to the europeans . Sure there have been colonists from different countries/regions in the past but the europeans were the most recent and the ones who have essentially caused he most damage and you can still see its effects in several countries today

Danielle M it's so true. Don't listen to these guys. So much damage has been done. We don't know if there are other cool things that were destroyed because those practices are "savage".

LagiNaLangAko23 - 7 years ago
Nah, that has always been the case with previous imperialists in the past, like the Romans, Ottomans, Chinese, etc. They are the center of the world, they are the chosen people, they have the mandate of heaven, blah, blah, blah, everyone else are savages and must bow down and be awestruck at their superiority. The real difference with the Europeans were that the people they met have not been in contact with the Old World for a long time and is not immune to the diseases.

Who’s to say it was good though ? The reason why colonialism leaves a bad taste in people’s mouth now is bc said colonists would see natives as “savages” when in reality they were getting along just fine for millenia minding their own business and living life they knew how to not needing their society being invaded or “improved” . (Polynesians were THE best sailors and wayfinders in the world only needing the stars and wind to navigate !) And if it equated to being in the iron age so be it, living differently doesn’t mean it’s better or worse .

And have you seen hawaii now ? It’s sad when people have to be told “only stay in the tourist-y parts, anything outside of it is dangerous and a slum” . Having your home only being known for a tourist trap doesn’t seem like a good thing to me
Suomalainen _ 368
Suomalainen _ 368 - 7 years ago
Danielle M Most of them died of disease and there could be nothing done. Im sorry for you'r cultures loss, but for Hawaii colonization = good (atleast for the most part).
Danielle M
Danielle M - 7 years ago
And without them hawaii would still have over half their original population too lmao . Colonization = progression is a myth 9/10 colonists leave a country far worse off than they found it

Yeah, everyone's been hanging ten on that gigantic wave since its inception... I feel like I'm the only one not interested in riding it. That stinker's got sharks and other hazards galore, I'm staying out of the water.

This is ironic since I am both an aquaphobe and an erotophobe.
