Dangerous and disrespectful to the Island. As a non-native Hawaiian myself, it isn’t the fact that nature would have done it on its own or that it will repair it...its being a bad house guest so to speak. This island and it’s natural places are sacred and revered to the local people. it isn’t a bunch of idiots personal playground to fuck up, laugh about it, put others in potential danger, disrupt natural processes and then leave to go back to your home! Marc Verrier this is a natural process and it was gonna happen soon anyway... The heavy rain makes the lakes and rivers flood and after the lake breaks into the oceans and lowers a bit, the waves will gradually push sand back into place.

Yes the river would eventually breach the sands and empty into the ocean but after how many more weeks? How do these people know there aren't invertebrates or other wildlife relying on the river water staying high to complete a breeding cycle? This sort of thing can be environmentally damaging because the timing of the river breach is being altered.

Not surprisingly, there are numerous comments here getting all worked up about how wrong this is. Here's the situation: The mouth of the Waimea River opens into the sea at Waimea Bay. Most of the time, the river's flow is slow enough that the ocean waves build up a wide sandbar / beach across the river's mouth. After a good rainfall, the river water impounded behind the sand will get high enough on its own to breach the sand and flow into the sea - all by itself, without any human intervention. This is totally natural and normal, and whatever lives in the river and the ocean nearby is accustomed to it and will not be killed by the mixing of the water or the sediment it's carrying. When the river's flow is reduced, the ocean again builds up the sand across the mouth of the river - and the process continues. People digging a channel here are not causing an ecological disaster. So calm down.

This happens naturally, may take a few more days or even a week but it'll happen, people just gather around and open it up just so they can surf it only 5 minutes later. If anything people are helping, so no one is caught by surprise if the sand dune gets washed away while someone is walking or just taking a sun bath.
