I'm an exchange student in Munich right now, and happen to go to school a block away from the Eisbach. Can confirm that this is an insane spot, and watching is incredible. There is no judgement for people who only last a couple seconds in the wave; it's just accepted that they're learning. It's super cool and trippy to see this familiar place in a VANs youtube video, and even recognize one of the surfers (guy at 0:29). Today in both of the 15 minute breaks at school, I walked to the Eisbach (it's February btw) and saw a couple dedicated surfers practicing over and over. I love the Eisbach and will miss it a ton when I go back home to the US

Oh, they had that, it was illegal but more or less tolerated for decades and it came close to getting destroyed a few times. The issue is that it goes right inside a huge park, and if people get injured inside a park because it has something obviously dangerous in it, the people responsible for the park are liable. If someone gets paralyzed or badly injured or even dies there, the problem originated at the inside edge of the park and gets flushed deep into the park. If you end up having to pay for a lifetime for a young person getting crippled, for all pain and all medical care and for lost income, that is big money. They had to change the laws to get it legalized.

+Luda7804 To the north of the Eisbachwelle, east of the Chinesischer Turm, at the edge of the park, we have a step-down in a river that is fenced off and locked up, it looks deadly because there is water falling down over an edge, and below that there is a bad backdraft of surface water with air mixed in going back to the falling water, several meters of surface water going back rapidly to the edge. I hope that is not what you mean with E2, because it looks like anyone who gets into that will end up rescued or dead, it is a trap. With any knowledge of fluid dynamics and about how people drown in rivers, this looks scary. But where is E2? Is it nasty or safe?

This wave was illegal but tolerated for decades, just got recently legalized, it formed by accident and then people saw the potential and kept throwing large boulders into it. It is difficult to build one, i think you would need to divert the entire river to do the work on the bottom. I know Munich has a second one, and people are working on making more, but just putting one into a river is difficult and expensive.

Yeah, great coverage of my homespot i was one of the first surfers there making my grade at a neraby school in 1980
i´m still riding, but only cruising and surfing mainly my age in seconds, what means around a minute on the wave or shorter if Tao drops in :-)

I started surfing on this wave. You don't learn how to takeoff, read waves and all that stuff (your arms are like jelly the first few days of a surftrip) but the board control is pretty good due to the river surfing. If you've only surfed there you won't catch a wave in the ocean, but once you're standing you can use your river skills to some extend. It's very different!

You actually can have longer time standing up and working on your legs and balance, but for me all would be with the goal to improve my surf in the sea. I might be masoquista, but I like to paddle.

People in Munich sometimes go to the sea to learn surfing there, they do courses and get experience there, just to be able to ride the wave at home. What the video does not get across is how steep the learning curve is, the velocity of the water is huge, the wave is not very high, the water has power and puts drag on the board and you have a very limited angle and height to work against that. Many people try, a friend tries to convert them and gives them a wetsuit and board, they get flushed out 50 times and give up. Even the pros in the video had initial issues, many of which probarbly got cut out due to the video intended to be very short. For this to be relatively easy, you need experience with small waves to learn the issues with that, and relatively big waves to deal with very high water velocities.

Having grown up near the beach and surrounded by a surf culture, it's amazing and joyful to see that you don't need the ocean to develop a love of the surf. So good seeing people from weird and wonderful places shredding waves.

I live in Munich, you get used to it, people using public transportation or just walking through the city in a full wetsuit and with surfboard. The community that surfs there regularly is in the 4 digits, it goes on all day every day, many only come once a week or every other week, and mostly people do it only for a couple of hours at a time. So when there are 40 people there on nice days, do the math. There are some surf shops in Munich. It is big.
