Wipeout . Thiago Jacaré . Raw Footage @ Nazaré, Portugal - 2018.12.14 [Surf, Big Waves, 4K]

This raw footage shows Brazilian Big Wave Surfer, Thiago Jacaré (35 ys old), charging into the first wave of a big set in Nazaré during yesterday’s monster swell. Thiago manages to ride the wave until a bump makes him fall of his board and he gets immediately swallowed by a wall of white water, suffering an extensive hold down before resurfacing just in time to catch a quick breath, just before the next wave impact. His team mate, Big Wave Surfer David Langer, first attempts to rescue him with his jetski, but there’s no window of opportunity during the next waves of the set. Thiago ends up taking with a total of 5 waves on the head (including the first wave) before he gets rescued by German Big Wave Surfer Sebastian Steudtner, in a moment where all teams in the water were requested to help with this rescue. Thiago was safely taken to the beach, where a paramedic team was already expecting him with full support. Thiago managed to survive this incident without a scratch, although he was completely exhausted when he got to the beach, and he was immobilised and taken in by an ambulance, as safety measure. Later on that same day, Thiago gave the following statement to the filmmaker who captured this footage: “This was by far the worst wipeout of my life, I barely got the chance to breath between waves, when I got to the sand I was completely exhausted, to the point I couldn’t even move” (…) “I want to thank Sebastian Steudtner for the rescue and David Langer for the tow, I won't ever forget this day!”. Thiago Jacaré is an experienced Big Wave Surfer from Brazil, he worked many years as a professional lifeguard and has several rescue courses, Thiago is also involved in the organisation of Big Wave competitions in Brazil, when he is not chasing giant swells around the world. Praia do Norte beach, near the fishing village of Nazaré, has become famous worldwide for huge waves in 2011, when Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara set a world-record for the largest wave ever surfed at 78-foot at the time, in 2017 that record was broken by Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa, setting the bar at 80-foot. __________________________ Copyright © 2018, Pedro Miranda, all rights reserved Surfer: Thiago Jacaré (BR) Jet Ski 1: David Langer (US) Jet Ski 2: Sebastian Steudtner (DE) Location: Praia do Norte, Nazaré - Portugal Date: 2018.Dec.14 __________________________ Related Videos: Tom Butler's Gigantic Wave (same day): https://youtu.be/-ucBfEDVJbA Andrey Karr's Gigantic Wave (same day): https://youtu.be/PZg8Bu0AMKY Rodrigo Koxa's Word Record: https://youtu.be/u_q9VI7pDqU Andrew Cotton's 2017 Wipeout of the Year: https://youtu.be/buMIbUPhT_A Russell Bierke’s Wipeout on Nov 7th 2018: https://youtu.be/3T0yayo7mAU Andrew Cotton’s 2016 Wipeout & Jetski Crash: https://youtu.be/W9mG-atemFE __________________________ The footage in this video is protected by copyright. So when the waves crash like that. Is it the weight of the water ??? Or the current dragging you along bottom or both that hurt so much??

That strap they were putting on him was a pelvis brace. He was lucky to be alive. We watch these videos but its only when you see the consequences of a mishap that brings you back to reality. What we were watching was a man who was probably close to dying. I am in the Fire Service in my country. You think you would be ok seeing that up close and maybe even doing the CPR, but nothing protects you from seeing another person die despite what you could do. Its a very confronting situation. When we get called out to a bad motor vehicle accident we bring all the older crew because of this.

SURF/SNOW... life vests now are a big problem . ANY body now who can afford them (skis/ vests ) can have a go with little skills .insights or the right to be there ..=. who picks the first shit wave of the set ? Who's wrong .. surfer or the tow ski guy ? oh its ok he has a vest attitude and who straighten out and misses the shoulder at Nazaré !? dumb ego stuff .. never mind the board and fins being small bit but that's ok =.bigger life vests will let all the weekend trustafarian warriors have a go ! ... That was one of the most intense, white-knuckled water rescues I've ever seen in my life. It actually has me emotional now after having seen it. The bravery, fortitude and integrity of the two water rescue guys (and big wave surfers) David Langer & Sebastian Steudtner is OFF THE CHARTS. They knew they were facing a good potential for drowning themselves every time they went in to try and get Thiago Jacaré out of there. Just, wow.

When I count the seconds under water in each wave, it's between 10 to 15 seconds. Can anybody explain what realy cause the danger?
Roy Claessen
Roy Claessen - 6 years ago
If you look at the wave, its the size of a building crashing on top of you. You are meters below the surface and you get spun around like a ragdoll. The power of that wave will crush you, it will push all of the air out of you. When you go down, you are already out of breath, then when you finally come up you instantly have to go down again, or in this case you get smashed on the head. The chances of surviving this are very, very small. Only professionals stand a chance, they have trained for this their entire life. Incredible that he made it out alive.

Amazing rescue by a outstanding team! And all the respect to Thiago. 5 big waves in a row. I cannot wrap my mind around that. This is something that only pros like him can expect to survive.

That was a hell of a beating. I member surfing Todos Santos it was the El nino of 97-98. I was about 24 I believe and I was out there with Snips, Gerlach couple of the guys that knew exactly what they're doing. And I took the inside line of the boil which was stupid, ended up taking a good beating. But nothing like this to me it felt like it but definitely not even close to something like this.

First wave he manages to do a lovely big dive, second one barely has the energy to duck his head, third one he takes it right in the face......from there, wow......Our survival instinct is unbelievably strong at times, the body takes over because by now the mind is gone !!
Mazza Fernandes
Mazza Fernandes - 6 years ago
Its extremely difficult to dive under once you popped 1 or 2 of the inflation tabs, might as well take it on the head and not waste energy trying to go under.
cspace1234nz
cspace1234nz - 6 years ago
+Gregg B .....Surely the primal instinct is a physiological response, it's the 'fight or flight' response when all the extra chemicals are pumping through the body. The body essentially breathes itself at the best of times, even though we may at times train the breath, and the body will do everything it possibly can to breathe and survive. At that point it is the only thing that matters, getting that next breath and will ultimately attempt to breathe even if it does so under water, simply because it is a physical action. The best we can hope for is all the training we do in preparation for these kinds of circumstances kicks in, even sometimes when we are on the verge of losing all consciousness.
Gregg B
Gregg B - 6 years ago
cspace1234nz wrong way around. The mind (“primal instinct”) takes over. The body is tired and exhausted so the subconscious takes over.

No words to discribe that beating. All the training these surfers and lifeguards endure is proof that gifted and skilled humans can survive in dangerous conditions; however, most of the humans in the world could not endure the training alone, then add the beatings of these size waves. These boys are truly professionals in every way.

Miguel Coelho

+Gregg B they use inflated vests for floatation and to protect their spines. I think if he had something to breath on his mouth he would lose is tooth or something. And when underwater with the pressure it's impossible to inhale, all the air gets sucked out of you. So, if you can only breath when out of water it's unnecessary and may get you in even more trouble
C Arn
C Arn - 6 years ago
+Gregg B xD ....C'mon...go tell these "idiots" how to deal with those conditions ^^ ..
It just seems like you doesn't have ANY clue about the violence of those waters turbulences. Even a life jacket "want" to get away from your body in this hell. So guess what for a little can just "mouth grabbed"...^^

As ultimas forças ele usou claramente pra se agarrar no jet ski e sair dali.

Esperamos que esteja tudo bem!
