HI there. I'm familiar with the foils used in kitesurfing. Is the board you are riding essentially using a kite foil, or have you designed specific foils for wave riding? Could something similar be done with a foil like the Liquid Force low aspect wings and Foil Fish board? Great vid, thanks for sharing.

We thought this was coming but didn't think it would happen this quickly or go this far. After Kia Lenny's first SUP foiling video was released 4 months ago, foiling has allowed the world of SUP downwinding to go from 14'+ boards to smaller 10' boards. And now Kai is showing us something very different... downwinding on even smaller boards with foils. It's so different it's a whole new sport! And looks pretty fun too!

Donovan Campbell actually Laird wasn't the first, but certainly the most well known. you can hardly compare Laird's strapped in snowboard boots and being towed in to a wave where all he could do was hang on precariously to the achievements of this amazing young waterman. Besides did Kai claim to be the first person to surf waves on a foil? So what exactly was your point? and what's with the disparaging remarks? Taffy I think your the pussy not Kai.

Kegan blay oh really? Like who? do you surf? I don't think you realize what it really is he's done? Lots of people have successfully foiled on a surfboard, towing in, strapped in. But the real significance here is Kai is paddling into waves, foiling and ripping the shit out of them and then pumping his way back out to the next one. And now he has taken it a step further and is harnessing the power of nature to get a free ride that previously couldnt have been imagined let alone pulled it off with such grace and style. Who knows where the door Kai found will lead to?
Now, tell me about these others that have done this before?

Kai –you have forever put your name in the history books. Many, no a few namely Laird have successfully adapted foils to surfboards for years. Even as far back as the 60's I can recall seeing a few guys try it on long boards. Non as successful as Laird however. What you have done is to single handedly make a giant leap (or hop) forward into a new realm. I have been dreaming of this for about 10 years since I purchased a human powered hydrofoil known as the aquaskipper which propels forward by bouncing such as seen on your videos. the aquaskipper looks like a praying mantis, not suitable for ocean surf but perhaps downwind. Kai you rock! Mahola

+Andrew H People have been foil riding open ocean swell for a long time, people have also been paddling into waves, not sure who was the first to paddle into ocean swell. Nothing being invented here.
Just like the stand up paddle board. Nothing new. Paddle boarding was big in the mid 1900's and people have been stand up paddling canoes for thousands of years.

Show me a video or photo of someone paddling into offshore open ocean swells, and then ridding them using the hydrofoil. I have never seen anyone paddle a hydrofoil into open ocean swells and doing so repeatedly for apparently miles.
