Nathan Charlesworth uh I suggest you go to school because first of all, why did you put "you need to learn what a tsunami is, and no this is not a tsunami" well if I didn't know what a tsunami was why would I be trying to comment the difference? Also I never said this was a tsunami, AND I said tsunamis can be bigger than this wave depending on where your from and how the earthquake under water takes place. So in conclusion, I was simply stating my idea of the difference if I made a mistake then oh well this is life, mistakes were made.

+Sandra Alaoui Do you just like to argue? You are extremely vague. Experts around the world, especially those geographically located in the "ring of fire" have documented wave speeds which could rival a jet airliner. That's 500 mph. Have I ever seen a Tsunami moving at that speed, captured on video, with only a few filmed and/or video taped events; i.e. Japan and Indonesia? No. I have not. So, there calculations would have to be based on the epic center of sea quake, and how long it took to reach the closest land mass. So, if the precise and exact location of a sea quake, happened at location "A" and it reached the closest land mass at location "B" with the distance between the two locations being 500 miles apart, and it took the Tsunami an hour to reach location "B" well, that's good enough for me. Keep in mind that in deep water, very deep, ships and boats have cruised thru past, seemingly calm seas, not knowing that they just motored over a Tsunami, moving at that speed. I still say a Tsunami wave is moving way too fast to be surfed, jet ski or no jet ski. Speak numbers and facts, not speculation. Bloody Yank.
Sandra Alanon
Sandra Alanon - 8 years ago
+Mike Farar I don't need anything, mate. I would say : just look to any video of any tsunami. It's obvious it's not that fast - approaching close to a coast.
It does not matter if you agree or not, at all.
By the way, you could do your take off pulled by a jetski.^^
Mike Farar
Mike Farar - 8 years ago
+Sandra Alaoui I wouldn't know. I've never been close enough to say, exactly how fast its going. But, if you need to be right, okay, I agree.
Sandra Alanon
Sandra Alanon - 8 years ago
+Mike Farar Ok, mate. But it slows to less than 100mph.
Mike Farar
Mike Farar - 8 years ago
+Sandra Alaoui It slows? Relative to what? I've been a surfer and someone who studies and has extensive knowledge of the ocean- for over 35 years. If' you're saying that a Tsunami that generates somewhere out in the middle of the ocean, and is moving at 300 mph...then, as it approaches land, slows to 100 mph, then technically, Yes!... But, compared to a normal, wind generated wave, a Tsunami is still moving at a minimum 10 x faster than a normal, wind generated wave. Fact.
Sandra Alanon
Sandra Alanon - 8 years ago
+Mike Farar As far as I understand from what you tell, you're quite wrong. A tsunami get slow as arriving to a coast.
Mike Farar
Mike Farar - 8 years ago
+Sandra Alaoui Technically, you may be right. If the wave was only several feet in height. But, you have to ALWAYS consider the fact that some of these Tsunamis are moving at speeds that compare to a Jetliner i.e. 500 MPH!!! A typical humongous wave that were generated by the typical storm generated winds, 50' waves, are probably only moving between 25-35 mph. A Tsunami wave,  even a two foot wave at that speed would not be surfable. The one that hit Japan, well, there was footage of some beautifully, shaped, long ass walls. Dont know exactly how fast they were moving? But, they were perfectly shaped lefts and rights. I bet you could find it on Youtube. They were showing boats trying to head out to sea for deeper waters, but sadly, most didn't make it.
Sandra Alanon
Sandra Alanon - 8 years ago
+Kaiser Frost You're not exactly right.
It's possible to surf some tsunami, but it depends of some parameters about the tsunami wave and place.
This is not always 'just a wall of white water speeding inland'. That could be a beautiful surfable tube.
I don't say at all it's not dangerous... But tsunami are usually not so big than the japan nor indonesian huges ones.
Kaiser Frost
Kaiser Frost - 8 years ago
+TheDanzinger Tsunamis have a loooooooooong wavelength and they travel extremely fast. When they hit shallow water their speed is greatly reduced, causing that wall of water you have so brilliantly illustrated. Very nice by the way :)
Kaiser Frost
Kaiser Frost - 8 years ago
+Mike Farar I don't think you can surf a tsunami at all. They tend to have a long wavelength until they reach shallow water and then it's just a wall of white water speeding inland. There is nothing to surf on.

+HannahVioletCarter Somebody already mentioned it here I'm sure, but: the real power of the tsunami is not the height, width or speed but the lenght of the wave. When it arrives to shore it won't crash and go back to the sea because there is a massive ammount of water behind it, so instead the water level just keeps rising onto the land.

+TheDanzinger

+HannahVioletCarter
Allow me to clear up all the confusion. A tsunami IS NOT A SURFABLE WAVE. It's like a wall of water that is more like a rapid change in sea level as opposed to a normal wave that first strikes the coast then breaks in the typical, tubular fashion that you can actually ride. Again, typical waves are created by wind and current, tsunamis are caused by underwater quakes, as Mike Farar outlined. Since this thread is about surfing, I think this major difference should be described in terms of the usual, rideable wave.
Conor Corrigan
Conor Corrigan - 8 years ago
+Mike Farar It's simpler than that. Tsunamis are caused by displacement, normal waves are caused by wind. That's the only difference.

Also, the reason tsunamis reach so far inland isn't because of the speed, which drops off dramatically as the wave approaches shallower waters, but because of the large volume of the water displaced.
Sandra Alanon
Sandra Alanon - 8 years ago
+HannahVioletCarter
I will tell you the true :

1_wave length of a tsunami >>>wave length of a normal wave (that's the main cause of the fact a tsunami is so damaging).
2_causes are different.

NO. Speeds are almost equals - when arriving to the coast. people are wrong.
Mike Farar
Mike Farar - 8 years ago
+Zetacast Bros Most of you have gotten some of this right and some of it wrong...First, Tsunamis are cause by underwater Earthquakes/Sea Quakes. The ocean floor thrusts upwards sending all that energy moving in every direction. Kind of like how you throw a rock in pond, and the ripple comes form the middle and spreads outward. Normal waves are created by various types of storms, that generate wind. It is the wind and the direction that the storm is moving towards that gets the focus of all its energy. Also, the reason a Tsunami moves so far onto land is because the waves can be moving as fast as up to 200-500 mph. where a wave like the one on this video might only be moving at 30-40 mph. There are other differences too, but these are the main factors between the two different types of waves.

Zetacast Bros
Zetacast Bros - 8 years ago
+HannahVioletCarter Looking at these comments most of you do have a point but there's one major difference between this and a tsunami....How far the wave moves! this wave would've stopped at the shore. Tsunamis go onto land and farther and beyond. Plus tsunamis are a wall of continuous water that takes a long time to stop making them that more deadlier
Conor Corrigan
Conor Corrigan - 8 years ago
+HannahVioletCarter Tsunamis are caused by water displacement, standard waves like this are caused by wind. There is no size requirement for either, the definition depends on what causes the wave, not how large it is. You can have tsunamis taller than regular wind waves, and regular wind waves taller than tsunamis. The difference is whether the wave is caused by wind or a sudden displacement of a large volume of water.

+Mike Farar i dont know the name of it but there is an island where a tribe lives. They dont interact with the modern world, so they dont know planes and electronics and so on. As the erathquake in 2004 happened they recognized that the animals on the island behaved strange, so they all cimbed on trees. Because of that they all survived. I think that says it all, we lost our connection with nature.. very sad.
Mike Farar
Mike Farar - 8 years ago
Yes, that is so sad. Most people have no idea  of the precursors of a Tsunami. And, just as you have described, the water rushes back out to sea, before it comes rushing back ten times more powerful.
Baby Cookie
Baby Cookie - 8 years ago
+Irma Suryani the same happened in my place after the earthquake(2004). People went to see the water rushing backwards and fishes on shore dying. Many ran towards the sea (never heard of tsunami before) to get those fishes and never came back.

A tsunami is water that is basically being shifted somewhere it doesn't belong (usually because of an earthquake) it's not so much a wave as it is water being pushed from one part of the ocean to another or even being spilled onto land. Like for instance, if you had a bucket of water and you blew are across the water it would create waves. But if you picked the bucket up and shook it (like an earthquake) the water would spill out of the bucket, like a tsunami. Hope this helps.

You see, the sea level behind the tsunami is roughly as high as the wave itself, which causes her to not stop at all.

Darien Edwards

+Mike Farar That's before the wave gains height. The speed you are referring to is when the wave is in open water before the shorelines decreasing depth forces the wave to slow down and gain height.
Mike Farar
Mike Farar - 8 years ago
+YOLO Justin It would be impossible to surf a Tsunami. Mostly, because they have been recorded of speeds reaching 500 MPH. That is the speed of a passenger Jet airplane. But, even if you cut that speed in half, or even a quarter, to 125 MPH; there's no way. The wave on this post is probably moving somewhere between 25-35 MPH. Next time when driving in your car, hit the gas to match this speed, then think about standing and balancing on a board, probably somewhere around 10' in length. Any kind of ripple or deformity on the face of the wave can send you tumbling, and at these speeds, its like hitting concrete.
Mike Farar
Mike Farar - 8 years ago
+Irma Suryani I can only hope that the rest of your family are okay. Horrible tragedy. They did NOT have a Tsunami warning system in place, but I thought that I heard that a system was going to be developed. Most people dont know whats going on when suddenly, the ocean and tide start rushing backwards toward deeper waters. That was the first clue that there was an impending Tsunami. I hope your village and your people have healed, and that life continues, with good health and prosperity.
Irma Suryani
Irma Suryani - 8 years ago
+Mike Farar You are right. On that day when we saw the tsunami wave coming toward us (we stopped our motorbike on the bridge and starred at the ocean) we had no clue what was going on. I thought it could be a "new and special" wave created by the nature for people to go surfing. However, it was strange to me because the wave didn't seem to roll, it kept moving toward the beach by accumulating and adding the amount of water that made it higher and higher. Later on, it was reported the tsunami wave we saw was rising to 20 meters when it approached the beach, but in some other places it raised up to 30 meters. Sorry for my English, I'm still learning.
Mike Farar
Mike Farar - 8 years ago
+Irma Suryani Wow! I'm sorry for that tragedy. It must of been horrifying seeing something like that coming. I have been a surfer for over thirty years, so I am always interested in reading, and educating, if need be, those who dont know the great power of the oceans and seas all around the world. A surfer could and has surfed the 100' wave at a place in Portugal, called Nazare. But, I doubt any surfer, no matter how skilled on giant waves could even surf a twenty five foot Tsunami wave, simply for the fact that they can travel upwards of 500 MPH.
Irma Suryani
Irma Suryani - 8 years ago
When i saw tsunami in 2004 in my hometown, about 3 miles away from the beach a 15-meter high, long, steady, and giant wave moving toward the beach very fast, it swept the city 5 miles away ... That's the different ;)
Mike Farar
Mike Farar - 8 years ago
Say what? A Tsunami is completely, and totally different than what one would call a conventional wave. A normal wave, or waves, are created by winds that are generated by large storms in the ocean. A Tsunami is created by large sea quakes, and some earthquakes that run along the various faults and coastlines around the world. You really cannot compare the two, but, it could be compared this way, a fifty foot Tsunami wave, is a hell of a lot more powerful than a normal, wind generated, fifty foot wave. In addition, Tsunamis waves can reach top speeds of 500 mph, as a normal waves speed, would only be a small fraction of that.

+tomhulcelover If you surf a wave that big and go straight along with it the whole time, you're going to get wiped out. I mean just look at that wave, and imagine having the power of that water crashing straight onto your back, no man could withstand that. If you watch any big wave surf video, they always surf away from the crash, or they surf under it.

Even with medium sized waves, you can't just surf straight forward, you have to do it at an angle, or the wave is going to crash on your back.

+Chris Merrick yea you don't literally surf through the water, i mean instead of away from the wave, he should have surfed along it. i have no idea about surf terminology so that's the best i can do to explain what i mean

Weird. A pedant gets worked up about someone posting something, about someone else, who the pedant has no connection with, has never personally achieved anything of such magnitude, has no control over anyone else's opinion, dislikes other peoples right to have their own opinion, yet seems to get a tad stressed when his own opinion is countered?.  I'd suggest a good dose of anally inserted insect repellent to appreciate the doings of a man with the exceptional intestinal fortitude to carry out such feats regardless of wave height.   Unless of course there's a "size" envy thing going on of course.   ;-)

This isn't the biggest wave in the world at all. This looks like any given day at Jaws (in fact it looks like Jaws breaking). Remember there are places yet to be seen that might hold waves higher than those recorded to date. As for now, Nazaré in Portugal has the leading potential for new world records but there's always the possibility that the circus move away to some other place in the future :)

+João Paulo Martins The beginning of this thread made me laugh. Its obvious you know what your talking about, your right about big waves breaking in places yet to be seen. I lived in the Azores about 15 years ago and I've seen some 40-50 footers breaking during hurricane season and winter storms. I was fortunate enough to travel to mainland Portugal on a few occasions and it blew my mind how big the surf got. I never went to Nazare but did make it to Peniche and a few other spots up north and was amazed. Anyway, thanks for your insight friend, stay stoked.

+Mike Farar Hey Mike how life treating you buddy? It's no doubt that Nazaré is hard to be considered a model wave... on the outside!!! But, and the devil is always crammed in the details, you don't see any of those haters, paddling or being towed into those gigantic mushy waves (Belharra included - it's situated halfway between Spain and France on the border). Even though they look soft and all, make no mistake or misdjudment: those "mushy" waves can punish you way harder than anything on your worst nightmare. They are heavy as hell (and I just surfed Nazaré at 10 feet max). It's a beautiful wave (reminds me of Blacks) in these conditions but once it starts to get crazy, it morphs into what you all see on YouTube. Of course that those other waves are a lot more media covered and are kind of near from you guys, so it's easy for you to get them all over the news. In Portugal, we have plenty of big wave spots but, I don't really know why, people just got their attention on Praia do Norte da Nazaré (GMac got stuck on this one :P probably) even though when a swell hits (and is very frequent) all harbors get closed due to high surf warnings. Well come and see for yourself... don't take my word for it :P
Mike Farar
Mike Farar - 8 years ago
+João Paulo Martins Wassupu Brah? The scary part in all of this is that some of the big wave crew think Nazare is too mushy to be legit...WTF? Whats the other place they say is not legit? Is it pronounced "Belharra" or something like that. I think it's in France. It gets absolutely "no respect" because they say it's just a 70' + Mush ball. I am no one to argue this point with the big wave crew, but I think that Mavericks, Cortez Bank and Jaws are pound for pound the heaviest waves on the planet. Of course, I am going by the standards set by guys with balls so big they make mine look like marbles. Correction, small marbles. Ha Ha....

Joao, I am 54 years old. And grew up surfing in so cal, surfing the biggest swells to ever hit here. But, double overhead, triple overhead, that was the biggest. And, from that time, until the discovery of Mavericks in 92', the standard BIG WAVE was around 30'. Obviously, at the time, Waimea Bay, and some offshore reefs in Hawaii, were the places to surf. Never in my mind, could I ever fathom, at that time, that ANYONE could surf and/or survive 50+ waves. Its crazy. Even more important than having the abilities of a world class athlete, was and is the ability to stay calm and relaxed. Fear is okay, but panic, is what gets you killed. I dont know how they do it. It is crazy. But, I dont think stupid. But, I'm sure there are some exceptions. At least we are still alive today to be spectators, and see the awesomeness of what they're doing. Crazy.

No, he was at Nazare. He had been getting towed in for 6 hours then decided to paddle into a few. He cant quite paddle into the first one, then turns back, only to see a bigger wave breaking further out. No jet ski around, then takes it on the head. He has this expression on his face, captured by the GoPro, that you gotta see. He gets sucked in and over the falls. Freeking gnarly.
João Paulo Martins
João Paulo Martins - 8 years ago
Was that thing at Jaws? I think I remember that one. He was almost fresh out of the plane from Portugal and tried to overcome that with a paddle out. Got drilled real bad.
Mike Farar
Mike Farar - 8 years ago
Oh, you're absolutely right. Did you ever see Garrett McNamaras wipe out, after 6 hours of tow-ins, he decides to paddle in for one beast, over paddles, then turns back, only to get drilled by the second. Go to Youtube and type "Heaviest Paddle Out" I think thats what its called. He even has a GoPro attached to the board. C-ya, bro.
João Paulo Martins
João Paulo Martins - 8 years ago
Yeah but Nazaré you can watch the all drama right in front of you while you're sitting comfortably on the rocks or on the lighthouse rooftop. It's like a death arena with some modern gladiators. It's painful to see, believe me. I surfed the place at 4 feet and that thing is a hammer. I can't even imagine how hard is to get one of those freakish waves from hell on the head. All guys that say Nazaré is kind of fat should go out and do have a go on one of those mountains of water. Don't forget that "the Canyon" runs deep and suddenly the energy meets the continental plate right in front of the lighthouse. My respects go to all crew members from Zon North Canyon Project and Red Bull Team.

João Paulo Martins
João Paulo Martins - 8 years ago

Mike Farar
Mike Farar - 9 years ago
+João Paulo Martins Bro, you know your shit, so, with that being said, the very best big wave surfers are now measuring a wave by how "heavy" not as much like before, like how "tall". Many big wave lunatics feel that Nazare is fat, and just like Belharre, not a legitimate big wave, like comparing to Jaws, Mavericks, Cortes and others. I think thats crazy, and you may agree, but, thats what they're saying. So, when I mention Cortes, I am attempting to speak on their behalf, based on what I've heard them say. Cortes breaks top to bottom...as Mavericks. Also, being a California guy, I would have to agree with the Mavericks crew that their spot is way gnarlier than Jaws. You ever paddle and surf with a 5 mil wetsuit? Upwelling waters....50-52 degree water? As far as other unknown spots still undiscovered, yeah, sure. Of course its possible. I'm just saying "right now" repeating what I've heard the best of the big wave crew say.
João Paulo Martins
João Paulo Martins - 9 years ago
+Mike Farar... and you can't say that cause you don't know what going on in the rest of the planet. Maybe there are places (like Nazaré) that will hold larger surf than Cortes Bank and your statement will fall apart :(
João Paulo Martins
João Paulo Martins - 9 years ago
+Mike Farar can't be Cortes Bank dude. You know why? Water temperature. Mike Parsons is wearing only a small vest and a pair of trunks, so... can't be Cortes Bank. If it was, Mike had to be wearing a full watersuit and that's not the case. It's definitely Jaws.
Mike Farar
Mike Farar - 9 years ago
+João Paulo Martins Not Jaws, Bro. Its the "Cortes Bank", that breaks 100 out to sea off the coast of California. My bet is that THIS is the place that will one day on the right well, generate the largest wave ever surfed

I.C. Weiner
I.C. Weiner - 9 years ago
+João Vasco  jaws and mavericks are alot like nazare in that they are all break from underwater canyons. Mavericks can get up to 80 feet with potential for bigger jaws a well, only reason it hasnt is that its never been documented, or there hasnt been a big enough storm for it to happen yet. Like i said, no one even knew about jaws during the storm that made waimea too big to surf.

Elizabeth Paige
Elizabeth Paige - 9 years ago
My guess is, because the surfer was being filmed, had anything that could have killed him would never have happened- the search and rescue team were all there. Did you see the boat rope he was hanging onto before letting go and catching the wave ?Again, helpers always stayed with him. Of course, I guess the force of the wave could have ended his life too quickly for rescue. I take back what I said earlier. He could have died.

Surfing any wave can end badly; people have been paralyzed/killed from 6ft waves (there is that 1 in a million chance that you'll land wrong). I was boogie boarding in storm surge and dropped from the crest of a wave right as it was breaking, ended up slamming into the ocean floor (if I hadn't had such a tight grip on my board things could have ended badly [the board kept my body from slamming into some nasty rocks]).

I.C. Weiner
I.C. Weiner - 9 years ago
you do understand waves this size can drown you? very easily? You can get held down for 2-3+ minutes at a time in these waves, and the rope is because you cant paddle into waves that big, its not humanly possible. They move too fast, therefore you need a jetski to get into it.

HD was definitely a thing in 2006. I was in film school at the time and I was shooting on HD cameras like the XH-A1 and DVX-200 all the time. It just wasn't as commonly available in small cheap cameras as it is now, which probably explains why this video appears to have been shot in standard definition :)

FuNnY ViDzZ
FuNnY ViDzZ - 9 years ago
It can kill you. I learnt about it in geography at school. Apparently if the wave comes on to you, the force of it can push u down and carry you back up and then crash u back down on to the sand below you. Even thought the sand beneath u may be very deep down the force of the waves are strong enough to take u that deep. Plus there is also another way u can die. The wave can hit you on ur body, repel and then literally pull you from both sides. A bit like if someone was stretching you from ur head and ur toes. Aargh that wud hurt!

RoamingIRaccoon - 10 years ago
It may surprise you to know that that wave is bigger at that point than most tsunamis. In open water, tsunamis typically just look like a small to medium size bump in the water. Its only when they make landfall you can really appreciate the huge size.

Mike Parsons at Jaws (Peahi). This is a few years old now but it was recognised as the biggest wave ridden at the time. How you measure that accurately I don't know. At least this wave breaks top to bottom, unlike Nazare, which although big in the face, is kind of a mush burger in comparison.

To set the record straight, that was Mike Parsons towed into the largest wave of the day by Brad Gerlach at a surf contest at Peahi (Jaws). The sequence was used for the film "Billabong Odyssey as the opening sequence and also in the body of the film. The ride is highly regarded as one of the best helicopter shots ever.  Mike Parsons subsequently did ride the biggest wave ever (77' 2008 Cortez Bank) and was surpassed 4 years later by 1 foot (Nazare, Portugal, Garrett McNamara)

Where's the camera?
First it's clearly under the surfer level, seems like it was in a jetski... then it takes quickly off... Can someone explains this? Looks faked, sci-fy scene...

xynmo - 10 years ago
How old are you??? 5???? The camera was in a helicopter. He was holding into something that was attached to the jetski so he wont fall when he goes into the waves lastly its not faked you 5 year old.

It's mostly because of the size. Nazaré's are so big the wave starts breaking before it can get a tube-like shape. However, in the summer when waves are a bit smaller it actually has some beautiful tubes. Check Kelly Slater surfing at Nazare.
David Hendrych
David Hendrych - 10 years ago
I think waves in Nazaré are mean enough!!! Even Garrett McNamara said: "It´s like to take Jaws, if you take Puerto Escondico and you take Waimea Shorebreak and then put them on steroids altogether. Then you got Nazaré" :-)
