It's possible to surf some tsunami, but it depends of some parameters about the tsunami wave and place.
This is not always 'just a wall of white water speeding inland'. That could be a beautiful surfable tube.
I don't say at all it's not dangerous... But tsunami are usually not so big than the japan nor indonesian huges ones.

Allow me to clear up all the confusion. A tsunami IS NOT A SURFABLE WAVE. It's like a wall of water that is more like a rapid change in sea level as opposed to a normal wave that first strikes the coast then breaks in the typical, tubular fashion that you can actually ride. Again, typical waves are created by wind and current, tsunamis are caused by underwater quakes, as Mike Farar outlined. Since this thread is about surfing, I think this major difference should be described in terms of the usual, rideable wave.
Also, the reason tsunamis reach so far inland isn't because of the speed, which drops off dramatically as the wave approaches shallower waters, but because of the large volume of the water displaced.
I will tell you the true :
1_wave length of a tsunami >>>wave length of a normal wave (that's the main cause of the fact a tsunami is so damaging).
2_causes are different.
NO. Speeds are almost equals - when arriving to the coast. people are wrong.
This wave is a big wave that DOESN'T destroys a whole city.
Tsunamis don't break like this. They come in more like a sudden influx of water, like a storm surge on steroids.

You see, the sea level behind the tsunami is roughly as high as the wave itself, which causes her to not stop at all.
Any wave this large can kill you.
You paddle or tow in, catch the wave, drop in, and make your bottom turn, and put yourself on the shoulder of the wave. You go faster, and get a longer ride... and you dont get destroyed. On a wave with a barrel, you dont want to surf straight off... You will get devoured.
by "surfing along the wave" i mean surfing under it (you put it in better words than i did) like i said, i don't know the terms for this shit.
but like i was saying, unlike the people in that video i linked you, this guy is swimming directly away from the wave which i've never seen people do
Even with medium sized waves, you can't just surf straight forward, you have to do it at an angle, or the wave is going to crash on your back.
