We used to go swimming at this beach in Rhode Island as kids. And we would go in pretty deep, like up to our necks because we thought there were no dangerous sharks out there in shallow water. Last week off the exact same beach not too far from shore a guy catches a great white!! Even though I was swimming in the waters 15 years ago I'm still scared to know that there were probably sharks around me.

Sharks don't swim belly up. That's not a shark. I think it's a diver like all the surfer dudes are saying in the comments.

Is the Dad an idiot or a con ?

This ‘shark’ is another surfer duck diving.

No shark swims upside down as portrayed in the photo.

( I think the shark experts already confirmed it wasn’t a shark as he becomes really vague about their assessment then he says oh well it makes a good story for school

I reckon he contacted the program before getting it analysed and by the time he found out he’s already made the commitment to go on tv and probably wanted to give his son a cool story for his mates at school

The more I know about how many shark attacks there have been in Australia and these people continue to surf there...I associate the Australian accent with stupidity like I associate a US southern accent with stupidity. Have fun sending your 12 yr old boy out into the lineup till one day he's lunch for mr great white. Youre obviously too stupid to learn your lesson.

No something smells fishy here. A shark wouldn't be at that angle unless you faked image. Also you would see a little colour in it's mouth being so close to the surface. Even them standing there looked staged. Kid looked directly into camera all the time. FAKE.

parkesy82
parkesy82 - 6 years ago
No one paddles out through a ‘surf lane’? Dude do you even surf? Aussie beaches are full of kooks and surfers having people paddling across in front of them is normal. It wasn’t a competition. It was just a dad taking photos of his kid surfing and found this one and claimed it was a shark. If that’s a shark with it’s mouth opening then it’s swimming belly up. That’s far more unlikely than a surfer duck diving in front of another. They were either mistaken with the photo or searching for a couple minutes of fame
UFC Central

Id really imagine they would have known if it was a surfer for obvious reasons.. Ppl wouldnt be in the surf lane during someones wave and all the ppl watching would have been like it wasn't a shark there was another surfer paddling out and it was him They wouldn't just go along with it being a shark.. The odds of a surfer paddling out in the surf lane during someones wave and somehow not being seen by any of the ppl watching the competition are damn near astronomical

Literally anyone who ever swam in the ocean shared the nearby water with some shark. Most probably more than once. Sharks do.not.hunt.humans.
If that was a crocodile, he would be in mortal danger (i.e. crocs hunt humans for food) - but with a shark there's a very small chance that anyone gets hurt.

Trawlers are overfishing the worlds oceans, faster than it can replenish, therefore share attacks are on the increase worldwide due to the search for food, they need to eat, if they can't find a good scummy tuna or seal but here you are surfing or swimming in there yard it doesn't take sherlock Holmes to work out the likely hood of attack
Rance davis
Rance davis - 6 years ago
Joseph Charles when I say consume I don't necessarily mean the whole body but may well swallow limbs etc, apologies if you thought I meant whole body swallowing is on the increase cos I don't state that and certainly can't prove it, I just mean attacks in general are on the increase, information is on the net easy to find
Joseph Charles
Joseph Charles - 6 years ago
Rance, can you post links which show that shark attacks are increasing worldwide? Can you also post links supporting your statements that sharks are eating and swallowing humans? That seems, well, unbelievable. Shark attacks are rare. Fatal attacks are very rare. Fatal attacks in which the shark actually engorges the entire person? I've only read a handful of cases in which that happened. But, you obviously have more information. Let's see it. Links please, not just more claims. People who study this stuff, scientists and such, are not seeing human beings becoming typical, or even atypical prey of sharks at all. Not even close. There's no evidence of that. Prove me wrong. Links, please.
Rance davis
Rance davis - 6 years ago
AYLA Barry you are correct to a degree, often mistakes are made and they would much rather not eat us this is true however my point being is due to the lack of food available they are coming closer than ever to shore and will indeed take and swallow a human, shark attacks are very much on the rise, they may not want to but they have to survive.
Smoke weed everyday -420

Ignorance is judging other people for getting on with life instead of worrying about what MIGHT happen.
Since 2010 Australian average is about 15 shark attacks per year with an average of 3 fatalities. Australian road fatalities in 2017 were 1225. I'm off to the beach, hope I make it and don't get killed or injured on the way. I know I'LL BE SAFER ONCE I'm in the water!

Lol, what an attention seeking couple of kooks. They both know as well as everyone else that its quite clearly another surfer duck diving through the face of the wave. Their back being the last part yo be submerged and causing the boil on the surface of the water. Take half a second earlier we'd have been treated to the sight of the back of someone's wetsuit.

Awesome photo!!! Sharks have evolved over millions of years to be effective and efficient predators. If this shark wanted to feed or bite this young lad or anyone else out surfing that day it could have and would have with no problem. This animal was more likely checking out what this "unusual thing" was in its ecosystem and when it realized it was nothing of relevance to its life, it turned away and went about its day. Don't fall into the trap of "Shart(Shark) Week Dramatizations" thinking they are ruthless killing machines. If this were true, beaches would be bloodbaths on the daily. We don't provide the nutrients they prefer for survival, hence we aren't a desired food source. Yes occasionally people get bit and once in a while its a feeding bite, humans have eaten humans too when they were hungry enough. It's ok to be concerned, its better to be educated and respectful.

dmgbringer, I think you will find a shark is perfectly capable of moving through the water column in pretty much any position, including being inverted. Interestingly scientists have discovered that Great Whites are less susceptible to Tonic Immobility than are other species of shark and to induce the state would require the shark to be held upside down for a certain period of time.
Leigh Price
Leigh Price - 6 years ago
I agree. With you
dmgbringer
dmgbringer - 6 years ago
I am no shark expert but what i do know from watching diffrent animal programs is that almost every shark have a state called tonic immobility this happen when a shark is turned upside down something happens in the brain of the shark and it falls into a trance, almost a state of full paralysis. It would be very unlikely to have this shark in this position and not suffer from tonic immobility. If this is legit then it could absolutly be one that not suffer from tonic immobility but it is clear if it is a shark it is upside down. Some years ago an Orca killed a great white and it was determined that this was the way it was done. For some cleranse orcas do it all the time to stingrays that also suffer from tonic immobility. Here is some of the research. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axPR1l6UTe8
