I'm baffled. If this happens twice a year, how is it there are so many trees that get taken down? I get that snakes and stuff can get swept up into the water to make it dangerous, and could something be done to make it safer? If so this could be one hell of an annual surf event!

yeah nice video! but what i dont get is why 2 surfers would choose to ride the same wave, let alone take the second wave that is smaller and has a shallower trough? had of been me i would have taken the 1st and bigger wave on my own (or at least pushed the other dude off to leave as croc fodder).

The pororoca is a tidal bore, with waves up to 4 meters high that travel as much as 13 kilometers inland upstream on the Amazon River. It occurs at the mouth of the river where river water meets the Atlantic Ocean.

This pororoca wave was covered in a great video on the Discovery channel. At a certain time of the year (spring) I think these waves make there way up the delta of the Amazon River. Surfers come there every year and they can surf for miles upstream on this strange act of nature.

Thank guys...I wasnt in this video particularly but have been there twice.. It is the encounter of two large, wide amazon rivers that happens once a year where theey rush to meet the sea...its is a deep and weird water but the waves are strong and very very long. Great surfing... Peace

This is not the longest or the biggest tidal bore. Eduardo bage and Patrick Audoy surfed the Silver Dragon in China for 17km last October. But it's not accredited by Guinness, so the official record still belongs to sergio Laus on the Mearim pororoca..respect to you guys though, cool vid. If this tidal bore is anything like the others, there will be one wave (or wave train, like in this vid) flowing upriver once with every tide for a few days either side of the spring tides on most months.

The longest wave ever surfed according to the record books is an Amazonian Pororoca surfed in 2006 by Serginho Laus, who covered over 10km without proning or touching his board. There is an unconfirmed longest distance which is sightly longer, done by Steve King on the River Severn in April 2006 ,at over 7 miles. Both waves are awesome, and both riders are true masters of their home breaks

not to be confused with a seismic sea wave. Tsunami merely means "harbor wave" in Japanese. A Seismic Sea Wave is always earthquake-induced.
