It would be pretty stupid to ride without a leash, imagine losing the board on a long, steep run! ;-)

They don’t have much to say about the board, more get up and try it yourself. I think it’d be great for expanding the snowboarding population. More places like local sled runs and large backyards are rideable with that board. Allowing it to be sold for all ages and price ranges, i.e make it cheaper for kids to use for their area rather than investing in a snowboard for the mountain would really be great for everyone.

Unless you have a smooth slope of fresh pow no bumps or much change in grade mountain slopes are common to have. Better have some good Velcro or or strong magnets to have good riding without a lot of yard sales. On the right run it would work like surfing. That is what carving pow turns feels like. However the difference of free boarding VS wake boarding/skurfing over the boats wake at harsher angles is a similar issue. You do not go catching air free boarding behind over boat wakes. Nobody I have witnessed and I have tried.

Danny Srtasser Yes easier for a snowboarder but powder surfing is more challenging than snowboarding? I am not saying you are wrong but a bit different in my experience. I had got a snowboard and put the skis in storage for good when boarding was new. It was my first season and had only boarded So Cal resorts with no powder or steep. Only 1 has steep in So Cal. or travel more to Mammoth. Went on a trip to Utah and had my first powder. Open untouched not short Pow. I and my 2 friends were STOKED. Carving at speed spraying well flawlessly. It felt like I was riding a large swell wave on my surfboard. They said the same. We rode it the first time better than regular groomed or packed with no ice snow. I became a storm chaser. Heliboarded in Canada and we chose Expert. The definition for the level after explained up to advanced levels. If you do not know this level IS NOT FOR YOU. At the bottom of the first run the guide was exited and over the top happy. You guys are great I can take you to some way better stuff. You guys want to drop some cliffs? The powder check he had done when we first landed was amazing. He extended his 10' pole and buried it and arm to his shoulder. He said its bottomless you are aware you signed a waiver and we are not responsible if we can not save you. I imagine that being a dedicated long time surfer helped but another boarder on our first pow run did fine. It was his 3rd year boarding. He lived in Utah and I think his first fresh powder run he claimed. All powder maybe. Pow is so precious! No friends on a powder day and it is duty to spray hard the skier making a canyon with a yard sale.

Of course it's easier for a snowboarder, and I have to admit that powder surfing is a bit more challenging than snowboarding. But it's as far not as difficult as most people imagine.
brianbirc
brianbirc - 7 years ago
I get it would have an amount of learning curve and a snowboarder could start ok in and on ideal condition. The rougher stuff seems hard and I can only imagine.
Danny Strasser
Danny Strasser - 7 years ago
Most people think that if you can ride it at all, it would only be in "perfect" conditions. But it's just like with other sports: Of course it's easier and much nicer to ski on a perfectly groomed slope in sunshine than on a hardpacked icy slope in fog. But it's still possible. And of course there are conditions in which you cannot ski at all, like if it's simply too steep to ski (and even then you'll always still find someone who can do it). The limitations are probably bigger than with a regular snowboard (an icy slope is really no fun and quiet uncontrollable on a powder surfer), but the conditions don't have to be by far perfect. Go out and try it!
brianbirc
brianbirc - 7 years ago
If you say so. I have not tried that and it is a bit hard to imagine it working in various conditions.
Danny Strasser
Danny Strasser - 7 years ago
You can see in the video that even big bumps work well. I have even seen (and filmed) this guy doing up to 2m (6 feet) drops without any problem. The drop you can see at 2:43 was properly landed!
The neoprene pads on this board work very well. I have ridden the board in many different snow conditions (nice powder to slush) and I have never had the feeling to lose grip.
Try a good powder surfer (the ones with a 3D shaped base are the best in my opinion. There are very simple ones on the market, but I think those are rather better "skateboard decks") and you will find out how easy that is and how great it works!
Btw, I have just posted a new Powder Surf video on Youtube:

Danny Strasser I have a very hard time thinking that would work over bumps. Not a pebble but a covered log. Even many types of powder getting on top of the board could displace your foot off the board. Smooth light powder at faster speed I can see working.
Danny Strasser
Danny Strasser - 7 years ago
From my own experience I can tell you that there are absolutely no velcro or magnets needed. It works very well without, even with bumps (which are actually fun to ride). Besides that, any fixation would destroy the spirit of riding bindingless.

Danny Strasser
Danny Strasser - 7 years ago
The cool thing is that you do not need ANY attachment to the board, it works great without. It's like skateboarding or surfing: why should you use velcro there?

Amazing riding. Love the little airs. Sweet snow. I use to ride a snurfer back in the 60's. Cut the rope off the 1st day to be more like surfing. I have a recurring dream where I'm riding without bindings again.. Such a happy dream! Nice job man.

You really have to keep the weather forecast in focus if you want to get such snow. Yes, we were really lucky that the snow conditions were that perfect these days.
Keep an eye on my Youtube channel (subscribe), I am currently editing another powdersurf video which I will publish soon. And if you want to know what to expect from powsurfing in the future, then watch this trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuyLsvWPiEg

Matt M

It works by pushing snow under the board depending on what direction you lean, the snow being pushed under the board then changes the trajectory.

I started on a 'Snurfer', um, 1974-5 winter, and then started 'snowboarding' in '78 on a Flite 140, which had fins and a convex bottom. The next board (which I still have, and sometimes use) was a 1980 Backhill 138cm twin-fin, with a flat base, rubber straps, and a snurfer-esq rope to the nose. In those days, that was the 'race board' from Burton. The other model was the "Backyard" which had the fins and rope, but only a thin rubber mat to stand on. If you could stay on one at a ski-hill, you were Golden! These 'old style' boards are truly going back to the surfing roots of snowboarding, and, for me, it's good to see! If you can float some pow on these, it's a sweet ride, something you remember, and can be proud of... "Pre-School Rider"

+Sam Arnold There are already more than enough powder snowboards on the market. The fascinating thing on this board is that it really works without bindings! It's going back to the essentials, to the roots. If you add bindings, you would destroy the spirit of this board and the idea behind it.

I agree, if you want to appeal to a broad market than choosing music that appeals to more people's personal taste would be advantageous. I had to turn the volume down then back up every time the rider was talking. Cool video regardless :)

Parcourse97 Well you can continue to prefer as much as you want and as long as you wish. The music chosen for this video is much faster. Us with the Generation X in places like South Cali that started extreme sports that have went forward a lot are nearly all PUNK ROCK fans and a lot of the world famous best punk is local and semi local to us. WE DID NOT start doing this kind of stuff before it existed to soft mellow music or rap stuff. We may listen to some Marley or classic stuff after with some green. My first band was in High School playing punk at big keg parties. Named D.A.M.M. Drunks Against Madd Mothers good band and good times.
