This is the frightening moment a three-metre Great White started trailing a surfer back to shore, just two weeks before another man lost his arm and hand in a nearby shark attack. Andy Johnston was out with a small group of surfers at West Beach near Esperance, south-east of Perth, on September 21 when people ashore spotted the dark shadow looming. Other surfers managed to clear the water onto a reef after people started to honk their car horns to warn of the approaching shark, but Mr Johnston opted to stay put. 'I'd rather try to hold my ground against it and not freak out and make a commotion,' he told the Esperance Express following his close encounter. 'If you're going to get chomped then you're going to get chomped - there's nothing you can do about it.' The photos showing just how close Mr Johnston came only emerged on Thursday - a month after his close encounter. Frits De Bruyn, who was on holiday in Western Australia at the time, was standing at a nearby lookout and managed to capture the drama. 'We were at a lookout and we saw a shadow in the water. It became evident it was shark and everyone started shouting. There was about a dozen surfers and paddle boarders in the water,' Mr De Bruyn told Daily Mail Australia. 'He followed him to shore for a bit... he was only a body-length behind him. 'The surfer went straight back out a few minutes after the shark swam away.' The un-fazed surfer said he didn't even think the shark posed a threat, but admits if things had gone badly it would have been traumatic for anyone who witnessed the attack. 'It seemed just curious and I didn't want to give it a reason to chase me so I tried to behave casually and keep an eye on it,' Andy Johnston said. 'But I didn't know it came up quite so close as I was paddling into the wave to come into the beach with the other lads. 'If you're going to say a shark is a threat every time you see one, well that's not true. 'They're doing their thing and we're doing our thing. 'I probably have a higher risk of breaking my neck on that reef than the shark causing me harm.' Two weeks after Mr Johnston's close encounter, Sean Pollard was attacked at nearby Wylie Bay, east of Esperance, on October 2. The 23-year-old lost his left forearm and his other hand at the wrist when he was mauled while surfing. Mr Pollard was dragged from the water where fellow beachgoers wrapped towels around his bleeding injuries. He was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital. Soon after, two great white sharks were caught and killed drum lines were deployed Western Australia's Department of Fisheries. The dead sharks were taken to Perth for research and Mr Pollard's surfboard was being examined by experts. They are about 200 yards and further out, there are plenty of White Shark encounters in the south bay here on You Tube. A lot of these videos are from stand up paddle boarders.
Once they get big enough to handle a sea lion they head out to the west side of Catalina Island and cruise up along the Channel islands looking for pinnapeds.
The smaller Whites pf 8' to 12' foot will take Se Lions. 13' to 15' foot like Seals, that are twice the size of Sea Lions. And the 2 ton plus Elephant Seals that make their home on the west side of one of the Channel islands are enjoyed by 16' and up.
Recently a pregnant 22' foot long, estimated over 5000lbs female was caught on video. These west coast Great Whites live from the Farallon islands by San Francisco, down through the Santa Barbara Channel island area past and around Los Angeles's Catalina island then all the way down to San Diego's Coronado islands. They finish up at their mating grounds at Mexico's Guadalupe island.

Friend, your facts are wrong. Lufthansa Airlines just suffered a crash this year on 24 March 2015, when an aircraft of its low cost carrier Germanwings smashed into the French Alps.
In these perilous times, statistics don't mean much and anything can always happen for the first time. Today, your company can have the safest record of all the airlines in the world today but in the next 6-9 months, it may suffer two catastrophic disasters such as an aircraft being lost in the ocean or an being shot down by another country.
For instance, if you're a surfer in La Reunion, you're definitely much more likely to get attacked and have severe injuries (death is harder to come by...), than getting injured by just driving around the island. Western Australia is also shooting the odds up. So it just doesn't make sense to sum up all beach goers' experiences into a big bag of "possible encounters", when 99% of the people go swimming or surfing in places where there hasn't been a single case of a registered attack, it's the 1% who surf where 90% of the attacks have taken place that should be worried.
Statistics can be misleading if you totally ignore other influencing factors. A person is only 19 times more likely to die on the road (compared to air travel) if he has the general driving skills of those who actually died in accidents.
I am not saying that ALL the people who died in road accidents have poor driving skills but many of them do. And if a person is a careful, knowledgeable and skillful driver, such high statistics of road fatalities do not apply to him.
The picture is very clear when it comes to the comparison between road and air travel. If any mechanical or electrical failure happens to your car when you are on the road, it is rarely life threatening.
You merely have to coast your car to the side of the road. And even if you are hit by other vehicles, the chances are high you will survive because of the protection of the car's steel cage and the cushioning of the air bags.
But when a mechanical or electrical failure happens on a plane, you are truly at the mercy and the skill of the pilots. And at 10,000 meters (30,000 feet) up in the air without any parachute, you options and second chance at life are severely limited.
So IMHO, I think your mom is much smarter than you. :-)
My life philosophy is a bit different from you. When I have to catch a plane to go somewhere as part of my job requirement, I do it hoping that the plane doesn't have engine trouble and crash. It is because I don't have much of a choice. Do it out of necessity or lose my job. Now if you ask me to go on a holiday and take a plane to somewhere, I probably wouldn't do it. I would go there by alternate means such as driving or maybe on a cruise ship.
Similarly if you ask me to swim in the sea which is already known to have sightings of sharks near the shore or worse still, have bitten or killed someone, I surely wouldn't do it even if you paid me lots of money. That is how my brain is wired. In short, statistics matter little to me especially if I happen to be one of the fatalities of shark attack.
I caught a Taxi once when I was about 20. Taxi driver blew a stop sign and an on coming car hit the front corner of our bumper. Sent us spinning into a nearby car park and straight into a post. It sucked, for both Taxi driver and me. I still catch Taxis though because I'm aware that the odds of that happening are pretty slim (although higher than being bitten or even seeing a Great White).
I gave up swimming in the sea a long long time ago when I was badly stung by a jellyfish while swimming 30-40 feet from the shore. I cannot comprehend how someone can still go swimming in a location where sharks are known to be roaming around.

the reason that sharks dont mindlessly attack is not because they are only curious.
predators cannot risk getting hurt. they usually die after getting hurt. being a predator is hard hard work. so an injury could easily spell death for them.
this makes them very cautious.
sharks have evolved over millions of years as everyone, besides the creatards, knows. the sharks of today are very cautious about attacking unknown preys.

You can't look to how an animal gave birth to its baby, because you also have a mammal (named platypus) who lay eggs, you have fish (like the great white) and reptiles (some snakes) who gave live birth..
The most important differences between a fish, a mammal, a bird and a reptile are:
-A fish has gills and it is cold blooded
-A mammal nurses its baby, just like dogs, horses, whales, sea lions, etc..

If a shark wants to kill you, it will kill you. You can't just 'escape' a shark attack. This shark clearly posed no threat to the surfer, although it is perfectly fine to fear sharks, since they can easily kill you, the ocean is the ocean. You take that risk every time you paddle out.
I am not afraid of anything. I do get scared, but I mean a fear where the fear stops you from doing something.
I will not die until I swim with sharks in open water, go sky diving, drive a dirt bike, and maybe, maybe come face to face with a wolf. That would be so cool.
Im not afraid of anything. Fear is in the mind, but it's silly to fear things. If I would see a shark pop out of the water next to me, then yes, I'd shit bricks, because it came out of nowhere. But you'd see me try to pet it if I wasn't bit. Because in my heart, I wish I could be a shark. They're so cool, and epic! I hope I come close to one. But on a serious note. If a shark were to be next to me in the water, then I'd be a little concerned and scared. But I'd keep my cool and just admire its beauty. If I get bit or killed, then okay.
Some people fear things like death, spiders, dogs, sharks, plane crashes, and tornados, earthquakes. I don't understand.
And even if I do experience those things, I will not be afraid of death, spiders, sharks, plane crashes, tornados, or earthquakes. And I seriously mean that.
Why do we even fear things....Okay, Okay, I think the only thing I really fear is pain while dying. Yet even if I do feel pain while dying, it'll be over soon, me being afraid of things, will never stop them from happening.
This reminds me of when I was swimming with my best friend in a river, he asked me to swim to the rope, I hate swimming in places where the bottom is all dark. Yes, I was scared, because it was an unusual experience. Yet after a little minutes, I did it. When we swam to the rope, I was so happy I did it. Then we swam back, and I looked at the bottom. I saw green and pitch black, and then I relt so dumb for fearing a little darkness. Hahahsha, man, I looked at it, and all I said to Nick (best friend) was, " dude I looked down, and it looked all black and stuff," Ha, im laughing about it now. It was so dumb, fearing something so silly.
Yeah, sharks can kill us, but people have had little things dropped on their heads and they have died from it. I thinl everything can kill us. But fear is a choice. And I will never choose it
of course i believe u it was. ive just returned from cape verde (archipelago on atlantic, near to western africa shore) and i kitesurfed a lot of there. it is said that that waters around cape verde are full of huge great whites but fortunately they arent hungry beacause local fishermen dont have enough capabilites to catch many fishes which could in consequence enforce sharks to approach beaches and attack people. although last shark attack happened there about ten years ago, when i surfed i looked sometimes in to the water to ensure theres no big, creepy shape under me.
