That is so awesome. I am very impressed. I'm a surfer in Florida. I love to see people come up with new ideas. I have always wanted to make a SIMPLE surfboard out of wood; but I wasn't sure it would work. Lots of people make hollow wood boards; but those are ridiculously complex. It looks like the main thing holding your board back is that the nose needs to be turned up so that is doesn't dive under the water. Maybe you can wet the wood at the nose and pile some concrete blocks or bricks on top to create the curve in the nose. When the wood dries, the nose should have a permanent curve in it. I'm not certain that would work; but maybe it's worth a try. It wouldn't cost anything or require any modifications to the board.

Sand it and put a coat of finish and it may work better. Also, you could use a jointer and wood glue to attach the two pieces, it would lighten the load.
Very cool though, you guys are pretty awesome to just start surfing that thing.

I've always wanted to do this! but yeah, I was thinking about the drag when they were building it. definitely wanna figure that out. If you let it sit in the sun while its damp, it could warp and give it a bit of a better rocker to it. you could also try and sand out a rocker. but once you get everything exactly how you want it, I'd definitely consider putting a clear coat finish on it.

Seems the nose isn't curved up as much. Most wipes are due to the nose tip slightly dipping below the water. Other, nice work!

Next time try making it a little longer so the board flexes to create rocker and in return wont pearl as easy! Im sure as you guys are hawaiian and live there, you know what an Alaia is, so same concept. And if youre ever using wood in the water it needs to be sealed so it doesnt get water logged! Idk whats available to you guys but any sort of linseed oil or whatnot will work great and if you cant get that at the very least vegetable oil will actually help retain the woods dryness! awesome videos none the less, have helped me out a lot in my beginner stages.

Needs spoon in the nose (you were pearling often). To do this, leave the front soaking in water and clamp it to something curved (up). Every day, tighten the clamp a little more, till it has enough rocker. Then dry it out. Put varathane polyurethane (roll it on) to give it protection from absorbing water. It will add a little weight but it won't get heavier as you keep surfing. Good luck! Keep the ideas going!

hey that's a good start - you can learn how to join some thicker board together (pegs and holes) and then shape the board with a sureform rasp to give it some rocker and a bottom that guides and releases the water, and round the rails. You probably want to seal the wood with paint or epoxy or it will get waterlogged. Rob Machado surfs at my favorite spot in Cardiff once in a while on a alaia ...makes it look really simple - I would think they would be simple to shape (really hard to surf well though.)

Why would you think it wouldn't float...? Wood is naturally buoyant and on top of that you shaped it like a real surf board, a very buoyant design....of course it would float.... Sand it down and seal the wood, good to go....
