This is the Amazonas River. That wave is called by "pororoca", and it happens because of sea force against the river. The brown color is caused by the mud! Google it and you will find out for more information.

@JetMechMA Yes and no. Remember that THIS river bed gets scoured clean by a tsunami twice daily. I wiped out once on the Severn bore and got dragged along for a couple of hundred yards. It was smooth as silk on the bottom. Silt.

@hiiamhelene Just over an hour. The record is now held (again) by Steve King on the Severn Bore in the UK. He surfed for just over 1 hour, 7.6 miles standing, then he went prone for a while which breaks the Guiness rules, so that's the record, but he went on to surf a total of over 9 miles that day. This wave travels about twice the speed of the Severn Bore. Sergio Laus holds the record for the Araguari Pororoca (this wave) at just less than Steve's mark.
neilandfi
neilandfi - 13 years ago
@surfactor777 He's probably talking about tree trunks. That wave is fierce, and tears off big chunks from some trees, uprooting others entirely. I have heard someone describe tidal bores as "Hairball waves", because any crap floating in the river can get thrown around by it. Stay away from the banks and keep your eyes on what's ahead of you, I suppose.

@chuckolove I'm told that there are piranhas, and like everything else, the force of the wave is enough to knock them around a little so they're running scared. A friend of mine just got back from here, and he tells me that losing the wave, waiting for the boat to come pick you up when you're over a mile from each bank with much bigger predators (Cayman, bull sharks etc) picking off injured animals is the loneliest feeling on Earth. I'm inclined to believe him.

The pororoca happens in different rivers in 3 different brazilian states it can be surfed like 50/60 times a year, it breaks to the right, left and it usually come in sets of 3 to 5 waves that can last from 15 min up to 1 hour the wave has been documented breaking with 8ft but there are stories of bigger ones depending on the bore variation and the bottom of the river. The water is clean, that colour is because of sediments from the jungle and movement on the bottom of the river

@VriakII Got it one. Absolutely spot on, yes. Tidal bores are pressurised water , trapped between two currents. Normal surf science only applies to a very limited extent. Everything handles differently. Low salinity as well, so lower bouyancy.

In wanting say by me, this river becomes impure externals emergency and is a thing of looking dirty. Anything doesn't refer even the thing of the lake. Mixing is a sea. the bacillus and the poisonous substance I also consider this wave to be a very good wave.

There is no right said by you that it is foolish. I say seeming in a dirty river that this river becomes impure with externals. However, it is a good wave and there is no difference in a perfect wave. However, originally surfing in the sea is true. I have been surfing for 25 years.

I've wiped out several times on tidal bores. They don't let up. The current behind them is fierce, so if you're near a riverbank you CAN get worked right along the bank. But you can learn to use the current to your advantage.
neilandfi
neilandfi - 14 years ago
Tidal bores come once with every tide. But sometimes they will have trailing waves immediately behind them. Not exactly a set, and at times the trailing waves are too soft to paddle into...but that isn't usually a problem with the Pororoca.

For sure that's a great section, but it's not at all uncommon to see tidal bores as clean as this. I think that they tend to get filmed from the same locations though, which means that those who don't surf them regularly never get to see the best of them.

A little unnecesary, given that across the world, bore riders have respect for each others home waves. But yeh, much bigger most of the time. Report from Sergio Laus says that this wave topped 7 metres on the face at one point this year. For the record, the biggest the Severn has been this year is just over 2 metres. Look out for video of the Chinese bore ,which will get huge over the next couple of months.

The water is clean, not drinkable obviously, pororoca is locatedo on the amazon rivers that ends on the sea, it is a really new discovery and yet we sthill not sure about the potential of the waves. It`s been registered solid barreling 8 minutes triple overheads already, but there`s been stories about 12ft waves
neilandfi
neilandfi - 15 years ago
It's brown because of the silt. So for me, that's only filthy if there's a lot of pollution held in the silt. I surf the Severn in the UK which is the same colour for the same reason. I've not been infected with any weird diseases so far. Dangerous...as far as the wildlife goes, best if a brazilian surfer answers that. The current following a tidal bore is beyond belief, so if your swimming isn't great..not good. The bore I surf is much heavier than any other wave of it's size
tioN4
tioN4 - 15 years ago
How filthy is the water? and how dangorous is it? Respond please.
neilandfi
neilandfi - 15 years ago
No, I REALLY understand why you say that,but... There's one wave. Lose the wave and you're done surfing for the day. And staying on a wave for 10 minutes and more doesn't normally happen on any wave except tidal bores, so it's difficult to appreciate how much work your body is doing. As for what the wave offers, it depends on what banks, rocks and structures it flows over. But that means that it's likely to change character all the time. If one section is dull, just wait for the next
Jon Dizzle
Jon Dizzle - 15 years ago
Woah Put the weed down bro! I am trying to say that when you get on one of those waves you cant do anything but a few cutbacks. Im just going off of what i saw in the vid. which wasn't much. I also saw a lil bit about em on tv and they said that you have to be careful with what you do because behind that wave is a bunch of debris and crap that got wash out of the river. If you think you can get as much fun out of a bore wave as you can from an ocean wave, then maybe you need some lessons bro.
neilandfi
neilandfi - 15 years ago
Understandable opinion, until you've spent a lot of time surfing tidal bores. Once you have , most people realise that there's no rush to get your manouevers in. The wave is still going to be around while you relax and cruise, and when you tire of that and want to throw in a few moves. When Jon Rose first surfed the Severn Bore he did something like 49 hacks off the top in 10 minutes, then he needed to get into a boat for a rest, and he's a pro surfer...the message is RELAX, BE PATIENT, ENJOY.

4 metre face. Most tidal bore surfers use non-surfing measurements because we can.. because the wave flows past objects of a known size etc. Never seen any vids of bodyboards on the Pororoca, but it happens on the french tidal bores (which they call "mascarets" and I do it on the River Severn in the UK, but they're both smaller than this. The Severn gets up to almost 3 metres at it's best.

But not a record recognised by Guiness. I have heard of Salazar's ride, and while I don't doubt he did it, there are several rides in excess of Serginho Laus' official record. In 07,Patrick Audoy and Eduardo Bage surfed the Quiantang bore for over 17km. Steve King once surfed the Severn Bore for over 12 MILES, but wasn't standing all the way. But as for records, the future will be all about the chinese dragon! They are now starting to allow surfing there, when officially sanctioned.

It's more helpful for tidal bore surfing to have the wind blowing "onshore". I know that seems strange, but with the wind following the wave, more water gets pushed into the wave...bigger wave. The shape is created by the fact that the river is flowing towards it. So ideal conditions usually involve a good flow of downstream freshwater flow, with the wave being pushed in by a fairly strong wind
neilandfi
neilandfi - 16 years ago
Even longer than that. Tidal bore specialist Serginho Lausholds the world record for long distance surfing on a single wave. He stayed upright on his board on a nearby pororoca for much longer than that in 2006, and is now surfing the Quintang Dragon in China, the biggest and meanest tidal bore in the world.Pororoca, the Dragon, and the Severn Bore have all been surfed for over 1 hour on one wave. The severn bore takes 2 hours to run it's course, the Pororoca is much longer
neilandfi
neilandfi - 16 years ago
It's in Amazonia, but it's not the Amazon itself. Several of it's tributaries have Pororoca, and a couple of other Brasilian rivers. I think this one is the Amapa river? Another good one is the Mearim. There's a dvd on the net called "Longwave" which tells the history of tidal bore surfing, and that gives quite a few details of surfable bores around the world.
