Almost Drowned While Fishing In Dangerous Currents (Tropical Island Part 10 of 14)

OK, here is the story, usually this time of year, there shouldn't be a lot of current on this beach. But after this video the locals told us, that with climate change, now all of the year it can be dangerous to swim there. The current was so strong we wouldn't have made it back without the flippers. We were swimming full speed to the sore but we were most of the time standing at the same spot. Only the waves brought us in. Also the waves threw us on sharp corals and we got several cuts. Tropical waters are often infested with sharks, in this region particularly there where White Sharks, Tiger Sharks and Bull Sharks. This was a very dangerous situation and I am glad that we came out alive. One day after this video was shot a man drowned on a neighboring beach. 2 days before this video was made another man drowned on a neighboring island. Please be careful on beaches that you don't know and always ask the locals. I survived but I was lucky. Always be careful when eating fish from the tropics. Sometimes this fish can come with ciguatera poisoning. Please enquire at the locals if the fish can be eaten or not. On my island this fish was safe to eat. After I saw some locals catching and eating even smaller fish I caught one myself. Want to know what gear I am using? Similiar pot I used in the video: http://amzn.to/2fA1a3L, I used the fire steel on my knife blade which is a big NO GO. However I have to say that at this point the knife was already wrecked, (broken tip, chipped etc...) so I did not really care anymore. This was the last day I used this knife, so I did not mind striking the fire steel on the blade. Thanks for watching.

Survival Lilly:Check out the US Phrobis III Marine issue M9.
It has a working saw back.
It will get shaving sharp with DMT diamond stones, hold an edge longer than anything and you can disassemble a brick building with it.
I run paracord in the barrel ring for retention.
If you can break it in your lifetime you can probably get a job with the Defense Department as a knife tester.
The sheath has wire cutter and pouch for fire steel with a built in stone on the back.
It is the best I've found, so far.

Hi Survival Lilly, Excellent adventure video. Rip tides and currents can be unpredictable. People are taught to swim with the current, mostly parallel to land while gradually swimming back to shore. Even the strongest swimmers can't out swim strong tides / currents. Glad that you and your camera person made it out safely. Safe Travels. Thanks for sharing.

Did you check tidal charts for that area? It lists high and low tides. Also weather can greatly change the water conditions. Time your dive and stick to the tidal schedule and you should be okay.

Watching through this series of videos, every time I see you husking a coconut it reminds me of PolynesianCultural's videos which honestly taught me a lot about the things you can use coconuts for and, as strange as it sounds, made me appreciate coconuts a lot more.

As a kid, I could hold my breath a very long time. If it wasn't for that, I probably would have drowned once when I lived in Florida. It pulled me under and twisted me, I couldn't tell what was up or down or sideways because everything was the same brightness. That one day, I got lucky because it was over my time limit underwater. Never told anyone.

Sounds like you got caught in a rip tide, also called rip current. If you find yourself in a situation like this again, remember to swim parallel to the shore until you're out of the rip tide, do not panic and try to fight it. These types of dangerous ocean currents are actually narrow channels of water and can be escaped by swimming parallel to the shore util you're out of them.

If you are being pulled out to deeper water it is likely because you have entered a current channel that allows the water that waves have washed in to return to the ocean. You can see these current channels (Google: rip tide) because where they cross the breakers the breaker wall is smaller than that to either side and the water is more mixed (often churning up sand). To get out of the channel you don't swim back against the current (that is how people exhaust themselves), instead you swim perpendicular to the current channel until you get back into normal water. Steeper beaches are worse than flatter beaches for this effect. If you can get a view from above the beach, it will be easy to spot these areas. Study the water and waves for 10-15 minutes and you will get a good idea of what the water on that beach is doing and showing you where not to swim. In a rocky area don't enter in enclosed spaces where waves wash into a narrow channel, it will strongly pull you seaward.

There is no tourism, simple survival only. Bridges and highways just.... gone...zero infrastructure, no power at all. Total and complete devastation. Barbuda is abandoned until further notice, moved population to sister island. Lot of the islands took a hit, PR was hit twice. Between this and Mexico...bad joo joo in the tropics. Hi Lilly, Yesterday I was going to show my son your post about getting your Styler sniper rifle. I love that video, you were so excited, like a child on Christmas morning who could not wait to tear off the wrapping. The way you looked when you saw the weapon was a joy to watch, the targets at each distance were superb...Then I saw the post where you nearly drown , my heart sank Lilly! I watched the whole post and was very happy that you were OK. When I lived in Alaska the Cook Inlet, (a large body of water in south central Alaska), would get sever rip tides like a huge spinning tube, that has taken many lives. I am so glad you are safe!!! Best regards young lady...I still think you need a spanking,

The oceans are the strongest wild force in this world, we need to respect it, never be afraid. Before goes to the water, first thing to do is stay in front of it and observe for at least 15 minutes the waves action, because their act in different ways in different times of the day. They act like "waves", for some minutes goes strong and them goes calm, and this pattern will be repeated again and again. There's no "two equal days" in the sea, every day it behaves differently. It's the most fantastic place in the entire world. I'll be really afraid in a place where bears are living.

How can you seriously think that climate change is responsible for a local current hazard? Have you considered that it may be because of other factors? OK this looked and sounded like a Rip. More than common hre in Southern Florida. In fact they are common along any shore line. They really aren't overly dangerous as long as you don't panic and know how to deal with them.

You just swim parallel to the Beach until you are out of the current. Then you can swim back in to the Beach.

The worst thing is to panic. Panic is what kills more swimmers than anything else out there.

Ed
MELODY MUNRO
MELODY MUNRO - 6 years ago
When stuck in a current (or a rip as we call them in Australia) never try and swim against it as you will just become exhausted and likely drown...Instead - swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the rip....normally rip currents are not that wide ..maybe 30-50 feet...and most of all do not panic..

Hi Lilly great to see you explore ideas on ocean survival and is something I always thought ,that if I have to bug out ,I might be heading to the ocean and not the forest because of resources as food and water are very high and easier to get ,,,maybe?....I think the main reason people drown is because they panic , get short of breath till they exhaust themselves till no energy to just swim or float.... if someone finds themselves caught on a current or swells; beach currents push you sideways parallel to land and is like a underwater river ,you just need to get out of it by swimming "across" either side just few feet , they are not the whole ocean , just imagine that is a river you need to cross and get to the edges.... swells / tides are the in and out forces of water in the same direction of the waves , if you are swimming in it and has pulled you away from shore , just relax because it will only pull you out as far as where the waves form but they will also break on you if you stay too long in them, it is scary because that easily can be 100 or 200 ft out or more , but once you reach that distance beyond the waves it is calm and a place to regroup ,think and come back with the waves like surfing with the flow.... like I said , people die because they panic and fight the forces till exhaustion... if you remember what are you against, then you can think and use the same forces to get back!...I am just past my 50`s and also been diving for over 15 years in all kinds of conditions from beach and boats and have over 2000 dives and certifications from rescue diver to mix gases, etc. hunt for pictures or hunt for food too, but stopped before instructor because I just want to have fun!... we have to understand mother nature to work with her and avoid getting caught in bad situations and there are also water conditions that should be considered before getting in because it just a accident waiting to happen, ,,,as a kid I spend a lot of time fishing and swimming in the ocean and from the beach , when I turned 12 while swimming , I got caught on the swells and pulled out like 300ft (felt more like 1 km) out, not before getting tumbled and pounded by the waves and popping out just for air and ended alone far away from shore!, but once I saw I was behind the the swells I took the time re energize and had to swim back , is it scary but it is just like being in open ocean and tons of thoughts come to your mind, but like I say to all my friends ,divers or not, as long as you stay calm on the surface ,you are fine and breathing the air that you need , then you will have the presence of mind to plan your fight back! ... just my 2 cents in hope that helps someone when it happens and just keep a cool head ! Take care ,see ya` in the water! :)

HI Lilly, I had the same experience when I lived in Florida swimming by myself on a deserted beach. I too had flippers that day which saved my life. I got caught in a rip tide. I ended up about a thousand yards down the beach from where I went in. I could not even get up off the sand I was so tired. I started to panic but caught myself and then just swam with everything I had. God was merciful to me that day, I will never forget it. Ray, Oklahoma

ghanaboyz
ghanaboyz - 6 years ago
eh. what is it to "lol" about? Weird.
Am so tired of flat earth-alternative-facts-anti-science.
The scientific evidence is overwhelming.
"Observations show that Earth's climate has been warming. Its average temperature has risen a little more than one degree Fahrenheit during the past 100 years or so. This amount may not seem like much. But small changes in Earth's average temperature can lead to big impacts." Source:
https://www.nasa.gov/audience/forstudents/5-8/features/nasa-knows/what-is-climate-change-58.html

Others that may be of interest:
http://www.wired.co.uk/article/what-is-climate-change-definition-causes-effects
https://www.takepart.com/flashcards/what-is-climate-change/
https://www.ipcc.ch/publications_and_data/ar4/syr/en/mains1.html

Oh, and yeah, you could always go to any of the places loosing island and laugh at the people around there:
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/may/10/five-pacific-islands-lost-rising-seas-climate-change
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_climate_change_on_island_nations

I guess one driving factor in the information warfare against the scientific facts are pure, selfish, greed. But I guess stupidity also kicks in.

Tony Heydorf, unless you've been caught in a strong current it's hard to explain to someone how hard it is. I could probably bench press Lilly numerous times, and, I'm much physically stronger than her. I was caught in a massive current in chest high water when our canoe flipped. It immediately sucked my tennis shoes off my feet, and, pinned my back to the bottom. I had to fight with all my strength just to get my mouth into air to gulp a breath. It also kept dragging me down to the bottom like the Hulk had a death grip on me. I luckily was able to make my way towards the bank, and, got out of the dangerous part after about 90 seconds. I could barely move. I was lucky to have survived, and, I was a very good swimmer. This was in a river. NEVER underestimate how fast moving/swirling water can kill you! Oh, yeah. I had on a very good life preserver. Without it, I would never have been able to pop up for a split second to be able to gulp a breath of air, that kept me going.

Steven Cotton
Steven Cotton - 6 years ago
That's a bit of an aggressive response. You seem to have missed my point completely though. There is no inherent skill based on where one is born, it's just practice, and there's nothing wrong with Lilly's swimming, even experienced people can (and do) get caught in a rip. If Kiwis are naturally better swimmers you might think it'd be reflected in Olympics medals tables, but it isn't, even taking population size into account.

I say this with a large Kiwi family, visited five times, spent a lot of time at Piha because my niece and nephew are members of the life-saving club and compete internationally. Don't confuse practice with ability, which is what Aidan Hart did.
Aimee Frost
Aimee Frost - 6 years ago
Steven Cotton are you actually that ignorant? You're telling me that the average American can climb a coconut tree better than Madagascan peeps on average?
Or that people who live on land are better swimmers than those who live on water?

Environment shapes us. Those people who live on water villages will be better swimmers overall than people who do not.
Steven Cotton
Steven Cotton - 6 years ago
Only because they tend to ignore any markers and signs, not being aware of them, or the local dangers. You also get locals that die in the sea every year. Still not sure what that has to do with humans from different parts of the world swimming though.

There is a lot easier way to split a coconut husk. Stand with your back to that large rock or tree, grab coconut in both hands, bend over and spread your knees apart, then slam the coconut into the rock on the end of the coconut. It will SPLIT the outer husk usually into three or four pieces which are easily peeled away from the inside coconut. You can also use a hard rock on the ground! Try it, it may take two or three good whacks but It Works! Beats using a machete or a knife.

cassandrask8 Do you have videos of you using coconut fibers to start a fire? Try being more courteous in life im really sorry your reflection isnt that well..good day.

Apparently some people don't know how wonderful coconut husk and palm frond fibers take a spark. Taking equipment and technical supplies on a journey is the definition of camping. No one is learning a thing from these.

I would think practically in a survival situation: Do I want a supermodel who will sit and cry and eat leaves, or would I want Lilly who would kill a boar with a spear and cook it in a clay oven?

Eh, it happens. Not a fan of the whole instant-satisfaction filming/editing style feel to the video either. It was much more enjoyable just seeing her do her thing out in the wild at a natural pace. At the end of the day, it's her channel, though.
