I have a Stella and it’s the best reel I own and I normally a Daiwa man. My friends say why do you buy expensive reels I say you get what you pay for the reel is so smooth and will last you a long time if you look after it.
Daniel Cheuk
Daniel Cheuk - 6 years ago
To be honest, the Stella SW was built to take big fishes, it shines when you are consistently handling fish over 30lbs. You can only feel the smoothness of the reel when catching smaller fishes. When hooked to the big ones the drag is amazing strong, yet very smooth!

I’ve got a Shimano stratic FK 3000 and I bought it for fresh and saltwater. The only justification I have for buying a Shimano Stella is you’re offshore tuna fishing

Because it is made in japan
thefishinginHS
thefishinginHS - 6 years ago
Stellas and similar reels are usually targeted for catching big fish that take a lot of drag out. So you need that strength from the reel so it doesnt break as well as that drag power so the big fish dont strip you clean on line

rizalcasserole

The only reason i chose stella reels is ...it's smoothness....hence jap's products. Then again for surf fishing, in my opinion , its not the the full used of the features.unless you use it like youtuber named Blacktiph used it for beach shark fishing....Huge spool & drag power.
You can always used others likes of baitrunners, surf reels etc.i only use stella for jigging/popping trolling..etc for offshore used...

Depending on what you fish for, you need a Stella. I generally fish for land based tuna, mackerel, sharks of the rocks and have gone through countless reels swimming and dunking reels under water, when I could of just bought one good reel. So I eventually bought a Stella, and it has been amazing. Tuna and mackerel also destroy cheap reels. The drags a shit, bad corrosion resistance.

Loved the "reading the water" segment. Knowing how you select your spots, how the tide (in/out) changes what you see are great added tips. BTW, my Dad uses a stella when he fishes with me for salmon in AK with all the silty mud. I give him a hard time about it too. Fishing with Dad...priceless.

Well this wasn't well thought out. Stella isn't a surf reel. It's mostly a jigging or big game reel. This comparison makes no sense.

I believe that you gave out some bad advice on the reel choice for beginners because some vintage reel are difficult to function and they may assume that all reels are like that even advanced anglers have a hard time using vintage reels so this means that less people may fish and go to drugs(sad but true)

Obw this is a bad test because it should compare the amount of line it can hold, how user friendly it is,drag, and durability.

Nice video Spinnfisher V it's tough holds a lot of line good for salt water and the drag is tough with a good sound for your videos. Pair that with a 7' rod and your good to go

Rue Mer reels are collector items, unlikely to come across such a reel and if you do,keep it for display only. There are serviceable reels for fishing for as little as 50 dollars, how long and how hard one fishes determines what reel one should buy.Nice family and video.

A Stella is overkill for surf fishing. It was made to be used on large pelagic fish offshore for anglers who want a spinner versus a conventional reel.

I worked my way up from cheap reels to the Stella. I have been fishing since I was 6 years old and always wanted to try the Ferrari of fishing reels. Plus, if you think of how many reels you buy that are lower quality and don't last? Well the Stella will last and also has a 10 or 15 year warranty. I don't remember G Loomis is also super expensive, but you can snap your rod in half and they will replace it with no questions asked. That also is a warranty for 10 years to break it at one time and have it replaced. Anyway, I didn't pay full price. I paid 50% of the cost because I got into a Shimano VIP program. So once I got in that program, it was game on for the Stella finally. One you go Stella, you can't go back. Other reels just don't feel the same anymore.
John Vogel
John Vogel - 6 years ago
By the way.... The new Shimano Ultegra looks a lot like the Stella but at 25% of the cost. It's also very smooth and works well in the surf. I got one for Christmas this past year. I have been using that in the bay recently and it holds up well. I only use the Stella now for tournaments, because like your dad said.... You need to take good care of them, and sometimes I just don't have the time....

As a current owner of 6 Stellas and 4 Saltigas, buy once buy right. Any reel can do the damage but it depends on your fishing scenarios and your budget. There isn’t a right or wrong price for a reel or rod as the fish doesn’t discriminate. Your budget entitles you to not feeling as exhausted after fishing and opens up the different fishing scenarios you can enjoy.

buying something vintage is pretty stupid for a beginner. Get a low end reel because times have changed and it's a good way to get somebody to hate fishing when you give them gear that won't work. as you can clearly see he struggled with that old peice of s***

I own a few Stella's and while I agree they are expensive, it is for a reason. The build quality, durability and power are unmatched. These reels perform at 100%, 100% of the time. You can catch a monster fish and have confidence that your equipment won't fail. When you're a finesse fishermen everything is a factor and your equipment is a representation of yourself. Perfect knots, correct rod for reel, proper line and hooks, etc. You're talking about a totally different experience from a novice. Having said all that - a 30 dollar rod and reel combo is all you need to start. What you definitely do need is knowledge. I've fished with spools of line before when I'm traveling for work and find a body of water. The most important thing is knowledge and technique.

I think you should always buy the best you can afford, the last thing you want is being attached to a great fish and having your gear let you down, even new anglers , because you'll very quickly be discouraged and not want to fish again as a new angler.

On the flip side unless your popping for GTs mackerel or big tuna the Stella is a little overkill.

Great video

Question: hey can you cast the vintage reel without opening the bail?
oakland002
oakland002 - 6 years ago
I think it's more of a status ego thing , meaning so you can show off that you've got the money.

If you're going for just stats of the reel, there's lots of other affordable reels out there that has similar or better stats .

Side note : most expansive gears are made with very better quality materials , lighter, stronger , faster, last longer ... but it doesn't mean you HAVE GOT TO GET THE VERY EXPANSIVE GEARS, to get the job done .

There's been times when fishing and the guy with the most expansive gears get skunk , while our $20 combo landed the most fish .
But there's also other time that we all get fish

I own a Stella 2500 that I just purchased. I was fortunate enough to get it for 50% off. I paid $400 they retail for $800. It’s by far the best spinning reel i’v ever owned.
Mark Mcdonald
Mark Mcdonald - 6 years ago
It’s the smoothest real I’ve ever used, the drag is awesome. It lays line on the sport perfectly, which prevents wind knots when using braid. It looks like a work of art, almost too nice to fish with. My only gripe is that it's a little on the heavy side but that's because it's all metal.

It’s all about relativity, if you bring home $500 a week Of course a $1200 real it’s going to seem expensive. But if you’re bringing home 50,000 a week or even $5000 a week for $1200 real doesn’t sound so bad lol

LOLOL...Shishamo for the win!!! Cool! Been wondering how they'll perform in the long term in the salt! Good to know! I have a few 08 stella sw's that split time between the surf and tuna. They're tanks...although they get a bad rap as being lamborginis. They're essentially an elan musk version of a hummer :)

if you're into baitcasters, Daiwa rules, but there are many upper end spinning and conventional/round reels also. It's difficult to see if you only look at the stuff available in north america. Most people have no idea that Daiwa's offerings are well above shimano's lineup, but they don't make their rounds to the stores because shimano has a great marketing team that captured the consumers over here over the last 30 years or so.

AFORWW I love my BG8000 too. It does work. Submerged under water chasing a school of Spanish mackerel and washed it off and it was smooth a week later. I caught a bull shark but that’s bc I had it set up for shark on that reel and it decided not to run too terrible much.

Your theory on used vintage equipment for beginners is spot on.

Now, the reasoning behind the High end gear for more seasoned folks is longevity.

I started off like many others using bargain equipment. As I became more involved in the sport I found that the bargain equipment, reels specifically, just weren’t lasting more than a year.

Being in Texas I’m blessed to be able to fish not only the gulf coast (2 hour drive), but also two power plant cooling lakes (15-30 minute drive).

So, I started progressively getting better gear when I could. And not only does that gear last much longer but I’m able to fish more variety of fish/waters because the higher end gear can be used for both.

For example, my Shimano Stradic 2500, $300, can be used for pulling in everything from perch to bull red fish.

For example, I can take that same reel and put it on a 7’ high modulus blank/rod and fish the shore at the lakes.

Than I can put that same reel on a 9’ rod and throw lures in the surf.

Now as for the Stella, I use my Stella for big game fish in the surf and on the occasional deep sea charter for tuna. The only difference is in the surf it’s attached to a 12’ heavy surf rod chunking 3-5oz plus bait where as in the charter for yellow fin I’ve switched out spools from 30lbs braid to 60lbs braid chunking lures on an 7’ Heavy custom rod built for tuna fishing.

Also, one of the natural things about using the higher end gear is that you will be much more confident in going after the bigger game fish than you would be using a $20 Reel because it is just built better.

Those technologies that have been put into the Stella have also been put into some of Shimano’s mid priced products as well.

I’ll end it with a funny story from years ago fishing the surf of Padre National Seashore here with a great friend that showed up with a bargain surf combo.

It was mid November and we ran into the bull reds pretty hot and heavy. They were cruising the second gut. Well after he’s second bull red he’s reel busted. The main shaft literally bent and bound up causing the main gear to strip.

I was using an older Shimano bait runner 5000 series and managed to land 27 bull reds that weekend without a hiccup.

But the short answer to your original question is as you start to up your game/skill set you’ll start to look at better gear.

Dan Stephens
Dan Stephens - 6 years ago
Stella is a really nice reel and definitely worth every penny and it will retain the majority of it's value. If I hadn't put my money on a VS250 I would have opted for the Stella... Yet different tools for different purposes, Stella is fast oscillation and very powerful while the VS is a slower oscillation but still just as powerful
Dan Stephens
Dan Stephens - 6 years ago
I didn't notice much of a weight or stiffness difference in the slammer since I am rather used to it in a VS. But it does feel like you are cranking a winch... But that is what you get when you cram lots of seals into the body. Still not a reel I'd use rock hopping or wetsuiting (The Slammer that is) I picked up mine to use up at the Canal
John Gonzales
John Gonzales - 6 years ago
You are right on the slammer. One of my fishing partners has a couple. They’re not as light or smooth as the high end Shimanos.
Dan Stephens
Dan Stephens - 6 years ago
I think Penn might have been trying to give everyone the ''poor man" Stella when they came out with the Slammer III.
John Gonzales
John Gonzales - 6 years ago
Dan Stephens, exactly right. It’s different tools dependent upon how and where you fish. I bought my first and only Stella 3 years ago. But there where two big reasons for the investment. The first being chasing big toothy critters on the beach and the second, the most important probably, was I use it to chunk lures for yellow fin tuna on the one or two YFT charters I do a year.

It serves both those purposes well for me.

A couple quick thoughts:

Firstly, it's not that we end up eating the plastic when we eat the fish. The plastic could easily kill what eats it! Not to mention that as it breaks down, it degrades into small enough pieces to starve out populations of bait fish, and other tiny organisms which rely in plankton to survive. The level of microplastics -- of plastic in general -- in our waters is astounding.

Secondly, I do similar when I'm hiking: I pick up trash others have left behind. I get looks, walking around with some camera gear (I take photos on some trips) and a plastic garbage bag, but it's worth picking things up. I cannot believe the number of people who think that whatever energy bar wrapper they drop is going to break down into healthy soil, not be picked up by animals or eaten, or clog a digestive tract. Hell, there are even people who are somehow convinced that a glass bottle -- something which is about as stable of a material as can be -- is going to break down into sand in a couple years, if they toss it into the woods.

So yes: It's worth picking up trash. It makes a small difference each time, but it makes a difference.

Agree and disagree. If you do want to get into fishing, you have to spent some amount of money. But not an astronomical amount. This is my rods/reels for the past 3 years

Ugly Stik GX2 combo, $29.98

Ugly Stik Catfish 7ft spinning rod, $39.99

Okuma Longtitude surf 12ft rod, $26.98

Penn Fierce II 6000, $44.49

Okuma Ceymar C-55, $47.99

So yea $200 on 3 rod/reel isn't bad, and I'm still using them till this day. U don't need the super expensive gears to catch fish. Fish can be caught on any rod, just have to get used to the feeling
Pak De
Pak De - 6 years ago
agree/disagree.... fishing can be very inexpensive hobby or very expensive depending on how much money one has available to spend and the size of your ego. I've seen giant trevally and blue fin tuna caught on yoyo handline and big bass and catfish caught with a Coke bottle. I've personally caught literally thousands of fish on a simple bamboo pole. not because I couldn't afford anything else but because it breaks the sport down to it's essence...man against beast. same principle bird hunting with a single barrel shotgun. if you can't shoot then the extra shells won't make a big difference. money should not be limitation on enjoying the natural world.

Ryan Nattor price doesn't always dictate what you're looking for, especially considering the type of fishing Brendans dad is doing. Tbh, I think the Stella is overkill for the kind of fishing he is doing but it is his preference when it's all said and done. Why not try a quality reel for a fraction the cost?
Mike Appino

Ryan My Stella’s we’re older. Most I paid for mine was 600. Shimano’s are smooth operating but not built like a tank. That’s where the Van Staal VR Series come in. Drop them in the sand, mud, surf or whatever. Use them for whatever type of fishing you want to do. Can’t think of a better fishing reel for any kind of fishing especially kayak fishing. I’m talking with over 50 years experience. Check them out. Might be as surprised as I was. Biggest bang for the buck!
