Big Water Fishing

The forecast was 1' to 2' off shore so John and I headed out on this cold morning for some deeper fishing. While launching at this particular tamp, the currents can be strong and when I got the boat in the water, the boat swung around in the current and the trolling motor prop hit one of the walkway supports and broke one of the blades in half so we could not use the Minn Kota for keeping us anchored. So, when we got to our destination, we drift fished the entire morning and early afternoon.

Hi Salty, I am taking my 2 nephews to Ponce Inlet on Friday. Can you recommend an area or fish to target? I am planning to fish the rocks at the jetty however if weather is too rough for the little guys, would you suggest a plan B?
SaltyKayak
SaltyKayak - 6 years ago
Hi Dale.. A couple years ago when I got my side scan sonar/fish finder, I made a run from one end of haulover to the other mapping the bottom. There is a deeper 'hole' on the N and E side of the bridge between the manatee observation area and the mid point opening into that small bay on the NE side. I was about 20' off the shore when I discovered it and actually heard black drum.. drumming there. But let me warn you if you don't know.. you will need 80 lb to 100 lb braid and a strong hook there. Some of those blackies and reds are as big as the wild hogs that roam the woods around that area.

Hi Salty, thanks for the tips! It looks like now we will be going tomorrow morning. I am planning to target the rocks and bridges for sheepshead and black drum.. I am a little torn though, I also want to try Haulover. I keep thinking this cold snap may have pushed the black drum in the Canal, although I guess the same can be said for Ponce.. Either way we will give it our all to find some fish.. keep up the good work on your channel!! Blessings!

Hi Dale, I looked at the forecast for Friday and it 'looks' like you can do the jetty fairly safely. If you don't want to go all the way out to the end of the jetty, that channel marker closest to the beginning of the walkway has always been good for me. But, be careful because the rocks on the bottom likes to eat anchors... easy to get stuck in the rocks.
You can also go under our bridges here in New Smyrna and fish between the pillars. Use small 1/0 hooks and buy fiddler crabs at bait shops. Or frozen shrimp are also favorites for Sheepshead. Of course, don't anchor up in the right of way under the bridges but go around to the inside of the pylons. No doubt, you will hook into some nice Sheepshead... have fun and take pictures.. good memories..!

Great day, Lane. At least you and John got offshore. IT's just a shame that you get frustrated catching RS, one of the best eating fish around. Down here the Party Boats move from reef to reef trying to get away from them. I do anchor in the wind and current but I'm watching all the time and have a quick release if needed. Really nice porgies!

A sea anchor sure would have been handy on this trip to at least keep the bow into the seas and eliminate that sideways onslaught of waves. Glad you both had a good catching day and that you made it back. I don't chance it when the seas get like that.
SaltyKayak
SaltyKayak - 6 years ago
Hi Jim, and that my friend is why we stopped at 18 miles instead of 30 miles like I was hoping we could have gone.

Went out yesterday. Gorgeous day and calmest seas. Caught seabass all day, 6 keepers. We hooked into a Cobia, was so excited and thought dinner was going to be real good. She was 31 ☹️. Tried stretching her ever which way, measures about 5 times but she wasn’t going to 33 lol. So disappointing
Alex Saltlife
Alex Saltlife - 6 years ago
By the way, when is the best time of year for Cobia and how far out do you have to go? Are they more on the natural reefs? Haven’t targeted them much but wanting to catch a table one this year.

too bad you couldnt catch a legal size red cobia say 35 inches or so, now that would have been a fight LOL

Great video salty!! I was wondering when you and big john would be getting offshore again. I'm looking to get back out Monday. Also I have a few egg weights I made for you and big john. They are 5-6 ozs. Well I will give you a fishing report when I get back. Keep the videos coming!!

SaltyKayak yes I will get better real soon!! Hopefully after this week after the cool weather/strong winds will stay way North of FL. I've been hearing that the mangrove snapper bite is hot if you can get out to the party grounds or further out. Well hope to see you and big john out there soon!!

Let's just hope this blasted wind calms down. I was planning on maybe a 30 mile trip but with spray and the occasional wave sneaking over the bow, had to stop at 18 miles. But it will get better soon...

Snapper, Red

FL Regulations

Size Limit: 20 inch total length Atlantic; 16 inch total length Gulf

Bag Limit: Atlantic 2 per harvester per day; Gulf 2 per harvester per day within the 10 snapper aggregate bag limit

Season: Atlantic open year round; Gulf open Saturdays and Sundays starting May 6; Daily May 27 - June 18; and opens Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays June 23 - Sept 4 (also open Jul 3, 4, and Sept 4)

Reg Remarks: Gulf: Zero daily bag and possession limit for captain and crew on for-hire vessels. Must remain in whole condition (removal of gills and guts allowed). Measured as total length. Total length is the straight line distance from the most forward part of the head with the mouth closed to the farthest tip of the tail with the tail compressed or squeezed together while the fish is lying on its side. Additional gear rules apply. Within state waters of the Atlantic and Gulf, the snapper aggregate bag limit is 10 fish per harvester unless the species rule specifies that it is not included in the aggregate. This means that a harvester can retain a total of 10 snappers in any combination of species. Gulf reef fish survey required when fishing for selected reef species from a private vessel in the Gulf of Mexico.

SaltyKayak
SaltyKayak - 6 years ago
Hi David, I have only done limited trolling for Kings and Spanish. OFTEN, when I anchor up, we are in some pretty good current out over both artificial reefs and natural bottom and even when we are anchored, if I have a line out back with a Sardine or small grunt on it, it will get hammered by Kings.

I have found that snapper love Merle Haggard Lol. And with all this wind we have had my boat hasn’t been offshore in about a month. I have gotten a lot of work done to the boat though which isn’t near as fun.
SaltyKayak
SaltyKayak - 6 years ago
Hi Deep... yeah, there is ALWAYS something more to either do or repair on a boat. I got offshore and plugged my phone in to the cigarette lighter (to take picts of our catches) and must have a blown fuse. Phone was dead when I tried it. Going to fix that today.

Hi Pam.. well, we were just a little too crazy this trip. If you look closely, in one clip you can see water IN the boat. We have several big waves come over the nose and it took several minutes for the scuppers to drain the water out. The Lord was reminding us not to test Him too far. Really glad the winds calmed down for the quick trip back in.

SaltyKayak
SaltyKayak - 6 years ago
Hi Kelly, Of course, I am attempting a home made fix for the prop plus have another one on the way and will be here next week. I am trying some strong epoxy to try and 'weld' the blade back together and if I deem it strong enough, will put it in the boat for a back up in case (when) I break another prop..LOL

Good to see you guys back in action. I think I would have stayed home that day though. I truly hate fishing and hunting in high winds.
Brad Cranford
Brad Cranford - 6 years ago
Those "sitters " are what us from the lowcountry call "still hunting" . Some folks from the north call it "stand hunting." Hunting your prey or "stalking" is near impossible to do effectively down here due to the thick cover.
SaltyKayak
SaltyKayak - 6 years ago
Hi Brad.. yes.. one of my least fav kinds of fishing. But, back in the day when I did a lot of hunting, I have jumped several deer during windy days. I was always a hunter that walked to find my game. Most hunters I have met here in the S. states are ''sitters' and wait for the game to come to them. I always wanted to 'hunt' my game.

Too cold for Cobia although, I have heard that there is a small population.. one here and there.. that over-winter in our area. And I have talked to other Brothers of the Hook that occasionally hook into one even in the dead of Winter but on flatter days.

Hello RK, My goal was to actually go out another 12 to 15 miles to better and more varied fishing territory but those big seas and teh occasional wave coming over the nose of the boat told me NOPE.. best fish right here..! There will be some days soon though that we can get out in areas where there are less Red Snapper (hard to do because they are everywhere).

Hi CTW, Both John and I attend Edgewater Alliance Church here in Edgewater and go to the 2nd service (10:30 AM). I won't be hanging around long after service because of other projects in the works and I have quite a bit of work to do on the boat to get it ready for shrimping plus a repair or 2 to do. Please come and join us as we worship Him who saved us and he who gave us each our special talents and skills.

You need a drift sock it will keep you flat away from the wind
SaltyKayak
SaltyKayak - 6 years ago
Actually, never thought of that... and never tried it. Do you attach a drift sock on the nose or side of the boat? And if the boat is not 'rolling with the waves' what is to keep the waves from breaching over the bow or gunnels?
George Pretnick

Please show us how you secured the BOTTOM of your rod holders to the boat. I have clamp on holders like yours, but I don't trust them.
SaltyKayak
SaltyKayak - 6 years ago
Hi George, this is at least the third iteration of securing the rod holders. Even putting thin cable didn't work as a big shark would snap the cable and we would almost lose the pole and reel. This last and best method has worked VERY well and nothing has been able to cause the rod holders to give way. I will try and remember to show it in an upcoming video but in case I forget.. I use a stainless O-ring clamp on the base of the rod holder. In that clamp, I have parachute cord cinched down between the clamp and the base of the rod holder. Below the rod holder base, I have drilled and placed a SS bimini-top clip holder in a vertical position (not horizontal) because I felt it would be stronger. I threaded the parachute cord thru it and tied it off. So far.. nothing has been able to snap the cord or pull the screws out of the bimini clip (eye strap) holders.

Hi Patrick... all the oil rigs I am familiar with are on the Northern Gulf coast and there is none off the Atlantic side of Florida where I fish. I WISH there were some as they are fish magnets....

SaltyKayak
SaltyKayak - 6 years ago
Thanks Robert.. gonna eat them porgy today for supper. Yeah, sure hope we get a season for RS and we can keep MULTIPLE fish per day. We desperately need to thin the population because they are decimating the population of off shore Mangrove and Lane snapper. There is only so much 'bait' to compete for and when one species is way OVER protected, the other species decline.. obviously.
