I have a blood parrot and they say that they don't have teeth. Mine has tried to bite but didn't draw blood, but I heard that there has been blood parrots that can draw blood. I'm afraid that I'll react and hurt the fish.

I'm well aware they are very shy and reclusive. But during  breeding season males will bite, and during the dry season they might bite. They aren't indiscriminant  killers

Went Hulk mah, red bellies are the scared puppy's of the piranha world. In fact most piranha are really reclusive animals. Not in your face like the guys in this video with a few exceptions.

I see that you have a sponge filter in the first part, and have noticed them in other fish room videos. Are the safer for fish and do you just do more gravel vacuuming and water changes? There's a guy on YT that is only using air stones for his goldfish but daily vacuuming and small water changes. Sponge filters the new trend?

+Jwhiser1302 thank you!
Jwhiser1302
Jwhiser1302 - 8 years ago
Sponges are the most reliable and efficient way to filter a fishroom. They're great at both mechanical and biological filtration all while providing excellent gas exchange. Not to mention you only need one linear piston or diaphragm air pump to run anywhere from 5-10 up to 100+ tanks depending on what you need, which is very easy on the electric bill.

My Colombian blue and red and diamond tetras try to bite me like that. Just nature. While fish are actually intelligent, he sees your hand as food.
BuffaloAllAmericans
BuffaloAllAmericans - 8 years ago
+Jwhiser1302 That may be because they don't perceive us as threats. If they did, they certainly wouldn't bite. It took time for my tetras to get used to me. I can almost kind of even pet them now. But before, they would not have bothered going after my hand. They do remember it feeds them food.
Jwhiser1302
Jwhiser1302 - 8 years ago
A fish's instinct wouldn't warrant a feeding response to something bigger than what they could swallow whole. Though these types of fish are predators, they're not a predator that takes bites or chucks from their prey items. There's an article I wrote for TFH magazine that talks a little about the intelligence of larger fish species, it was published in the sept 2014 issue if you'd like to take a look.

The Hoga is being territorial, and dominant. You can tell by the way the fish flares the gill plates and by the way it wants to bite. Cichlids fight by locking jaws with each other and biting. I don't think it "hates" you, it just is trying to establish dominance and territory with you.

Hey man I was wondering if I could get some advice. I have a 27 gallon tank with baby Convict Cichlids in it. I took the parents out because I was told that'd be the best course of action. I have a 75 gallon that I put them in. They are currently in there by themselves with a very tiny pleco. I was told that the pair would kill just about anything I put in there, but I'd really hate to waste a 75 gallon on 2 small cichlids. Do you have any suggestions as to what I could do? I was thinking about putting the pair back in the 27 with the babies and just starting from scratch in the 75. I'd really like to put some cichlids in there, but I'm not really sure what kind. So maybe an experienced cichlid owner like yourself would have some tips or suggestions?

+Jwhiser1302 Actually another question I have is how do you recommend doing water changes with Fry in the water? The Convict fry have the 27 gallon to themselves and I'm not really sure how to approach water changes in fear of sucking them out with the syphon

+Jwhiser1302 Thanks man I really appreciate it. I don't really trust advice I get from pet stores because they'll tell me that I can put like 4 Oscars in a 40 gallon just so that they can make more money haha. I'd rather get fish advice from someone who doesn't have anything to gain, such as yourself. So thank you
Jwhiser1302
Jwhiser1302 - 9 years ago
+Marshall Eriksen +Marshall Eriksen I see, however, it's not as difficult as it seems. As long as you research the fish you want to keep and provide them correct husbandry and good water quality then you'll be fine. With that said, there is a large Molly (a live bearer species) that will do well with a lot of different types of cichlids. The name slips my mind right now but I'll def look into it and send you the name. Also, whatever cichlids you decide to go with, if you need any help or advice on what will go with what just shoot me an email or message here. My email is in the description of all of my videos.
Marshall Eriksen
Marshall Eriksen - 9 years ago
+Jwhiser1302 I wanted a few cichlids and maybe a pleco. But I don't think I'm experienced enough for a community type tank yet. As beautiful as those types of tanks are, I'd rather my fish be happy and healthy.
Jwhiser1302
Jwhiser1302 - 9 years ago

+Jwhiser1302 How are Electric Blue jack demspeys?
Jwhiser1302
Jwhiser1302 - 9 years ago
You can expect them to reach in a range of 8". If you take great care to provide the best to them it's not unheard of for them to reach about 10" however. The thing with oscars is the get massive. Though you could house one in a 75, that would be the only fish in the tank once the Oscar reaches adulthood size, because adding anything else would be a lot of work on you to maintain good water quality, being they're an extremely dirty fish as well.
Marshall Eriksen
Marshall Eriksen - 9 years ago
+Jwhiser1302 I've really been looking into getting an Oscar. I saw a few videos of Convicts and Oscars interacting and it seemed like they got along. Idk if the same could be said about a breeding pair though. They'll probably be more aggressive.
Marshall Eriksen

Jwhiser1302
Jwhiser1302 - 9 years ago

Marshall Eriksen
Marshall Eriksen - 9 years ago
+Jwhiser1302 I'm relatively new to the cichlid side of things. That's why I started out with the Convicts. Because I was told that they're some of the easiest cichlids to care for. But now that I have my bearings and a nice 75 gallon with a nice canister filter, I think I'm ready for the next step. What would you put in a 75?
Jwhiser1302
Jwhiser1302 - 9 years ago
The convicts will take care of the fry they had so moving them is just a option not a have to do type thing. What kind of cichlids do you like? I know what I'd like to do with a 75 but being your tank, you've got to be happy with it. The best advice for stocking that tank would be something that grows very slow or that doesn't get over 8".

African Cichlid is a vague term, do you know what kind of Africans because it would really depend on that. Jewels are Africans as well. To calculate how many gallons you have (which from what you said sounds like a 29 gallon or 32 gallon) you use this formula; Length X Width X Height divided by 231.

Thank you sir, that's for sure bro! They get enormous and I can't wait either. I had one in the past that was around 12"-13" if I remember correctly. That fish would be much bigger today!

That pleco looks amazing. What do you feed it? I never see my bristle nose eat. I drop algae wafers every other night, and hope he gets them.

All of my plecos go nuts for Veggy krill from Southern Delight. I'm sure it's eating for you, otherwise it wouldn't last long, wouldn't hurt to try another source though, may bring them out for you to see them eat.

Exactly how I pronounced it in the video is the pronunciation given by the founder of the species. When you hear "biker" it's a mispronunciation.

You know meant to ask you about the flow after you did the diy Co2 defuser cause I notice you put smaller hoses and that's like adding a reducer.  It's good to know.

Low grade flower horns can have some similarities but it's still easy to tell Trimacs and fh apart as flower horns are hybrids bred to exaggerate color and head size.

is it possible for small flowerhorns to look like trimacs? my LFS has a fish that looks very similar to odis, and labeled as a flowerhorn. and after doing a google image search on trimac the fish im talking about looks exactly like a trimac it has the red eyes and the pink behind its gill plates and under belly
