Can a Dead Fish Make Paper "Fly"? Weird Experiment That Actually Works!

This video shows you a weird experiment where a fish gallbladder makes paper zoom around on the top of water! I experiment to make my best hypothesis about why this is happening and end up showing you an easier way to make this happen than using a fish! Of that I am not so angry. Just a bit annoyed actually, as I agree with you about that. But what DID make me so unmeasurable angry was I saw some article that claimed that Hawking would have said some fatalistic "truth" about our world and politics. As he has NEVER stated such a thing and I got mad at the person who spread such lies, since then I am going to hunt such lies down. If I see similar again after this event I am not sure what to do. Misinformation and fatalism must be gone for good.

In my country we had so many great physicists and i can feel the loss of such a great man . After high school I'll go to a physicist university in Pécs and one of the professor is met hawking personally . He said he was a beautiful person in his own way and H. said he was inspired by Einstein . After that the prof. siad he is from hungary and Hawking started to smile an laugh and just said "I don't know who you are, but you are Hungarian so you must be a great mind" and laughed while mentioned Leó Szilárd. then the prof felt really awed and he said goodbye after they spoken for another 15 minutes .

Hey, this is an often situation I face in everyday life: When you have a glass bottle of really cold fizzy soda (something in between 4°C-1°C still liquid) and you open it with lid opener, the soda at the neck part of the bottle gets crystallized immediately.

Why?

One explaination I read about it was, it is all about thermodynamics. There is pressure in the bottle which wants to escape. And when you open the lid, the gas is pushed out. But the only energy that the soda can use its thermal energy. So it loses heat during the release of pressure. Then the closer molecules to bottle hole suddenly drops to freezing point and gets crystallized. Just like the deodorants gets cold in our hand when we use them?!

Sorry for my English. I hope I interpret it correctly but is this true?

Can you recreate the conditions and repeat the experiment, please? I am really wondering about your explaination.

We did something similar back in primary school. We'd cut up small pieces of paper or leaves and put a little bit of pen ink on one end of the paper or leaf and we put them in the water, the ink would then propel them and leave a rainbow like trail behind it.

For people who do not understand why you can't use the same water again, it is easy to see by using sap from a tree. get a little twig and apply sap to one end and put it in the water. you will see the oils from the sap spread across the surface of the water! try it!

what would happen, if you had a dropper clean, but full of soap, no soap on the outside of the dropper after filling it, and slowly put the tip into clean peppered water, and squeeze a drop into the water but under the surface, rather than dropping it onto the water, some could conclude that the soap causes a ripple, that pushes the pepper away with its wake, cool experiment here though

ODI Idk - 6 years ago
Bassel Dahdouh his hand created little droplets that were coated with the layer of bile which created an "inverted bubble" with bile on the outside and water on the inside, the droplets then can bounce on the water due to surface tension until it pops and go back into the water, you can also do this with soap

We had to do this in my chemistry lab. We didn't put any thing on to though, so we didn't get to see any swimming. We used hydrophobic and hydrophilic ends so the substance spread out nicely on to a single layer allowing us to estimate avogrado's number. I messed that experiment up BTW and got a number that is way off.

How large scale can you go with this? Does it only work with small pieces of paper or could you use something much larger like a whole sheet of paper in a bathtub or swimming pool, or even a heavier object like a piece of wood? Does the effect change by using different liquids (we have all seen the milk with food coloring experiment)? Does the type and concentration of the soap also matter since you would presumably have a different concentration of the chain molecules and some soaps might have longer or shorter chains?
Side note, the electromagnetic properties of covalent bonding is an awesome effect, thanks for doing a video on it!

A question: Why is refrigerated ravioli or similar extremely hard to microwave compared to other refrigerated food like a bare hamburger for example? Is there some shielding going on inside the cold ravioli? Without opening and stiring every minute, It takes as long to get that hot as it would take to get a frosen hamburger to become steaming hot in the microwwave. What physics is involved? It could be funny to ask "Can you shield a space ship from the microwaves of the sun, using Ravioli?". Anyway I would love a video that explains microwaving times for different agents/food/substances/temperatures.

Hi there
I remember in my childhood we use to play with tiny tin boats which had a small slot at the back. In these slot a small square piece of camphor is put such that it is facing downward. And when we put this miniscule boat on water in a tub it quickly move in circles across the surface of water and once the camphor is fully dissolved , it stops.
What is the reason behind this? Is it due to some gas released as a result of water reacting with camphor.. or due to the hydrophilic and hydrophobic surface like you have shown in this video?

Regards
Kashif

I know, why soap one is so much quick, coz soap breaks the surface tension of upper layer, i did an experiment, i spread litters of dry grass and put 1 drop of liquid soap in center of water, a ripple of water would start from center to circumference, and thats very quick, i searched it, its coz of surface tension, soap breaks the surface tension of water molecules.
Thats the reason everytime u require fresh water for experiment.
Tell me if i am correct or wrong!

Yes, it’s “breaking” the surface tension of the water due to the spreading out on the surface. Kind of a different way of saying the same thing. The pepper thing is usually explained by surface tension but I always find that explanation lacking to explain what you are actually seeing.

Once a film is floating on the water, there's no longer any surface-tension differential. Incidentally, any light oil will work. I've done this effect with tea-tree oil, simply because it was right at hand. Peppermint oil, or even alcohol would do the same thing. I don't see the big deal about fish-bile.
